‘End of an era’ – why the Premiership will change

In front of a captivated Twickenham crowd in December 2012, England shocked the rugby world by defeating a formidable New Zealand side in the face of odds.

Head coach Stuart Lancaster assembled a young England squad, many of whom were just beginning their international careers. A host would become a fixture at the following two or even three Rugby World Cups.

That day was the beginning for Alex Goode, Mike Brown, Ben Youngs, and Dan Cole. In the upcoming days and weeks, they all bid goodbye to English rugby, more than 12 years later. On the bench, Dani Care also bows out.

And while it is customary for a small number of outstanding servants to end their respective seasons, it is rare for them to leave the stage together.

Youngs and Cole, both 37, both Test centurions and Leicester devoted men, are the only players who have played for England.

Another one-club player, 37, recently completed his 400th game for Saracens, where he has won six Premiership titles and participated in nine finals.

Another Test centurion, Harlequins legend Care, 38, made his England debut in 2008 and, in an unprecedented time, retired from international duty in 2024.

Brown, 39, is still playing at the highest level. The durable full-back has only three Premiership appearances, Richard Wigglesworth, Care, and Goode.

They have all contributed a lot to English football. An era is about to end.

According to Care, “Many of us have passed away at once,” citing also the generational players’ mid-season retirements, Joe Marler and Anthony Watson.

“But it’s probably a little a sign of the times,” he continued. Nowadays, there are numerous academy students who are replacing older ones.

The squad dynamic is probably slightly different, so that’s why. We’re not all that many anymore!

As financially challenged Premiership clubs place their trust in youth, Cole acknowledged in his retirement announcement that he didn’t want to be “the old guy, sitting around and hanging on.”

But they all managed to get this far remarkably well.

Brown, who turns 40 in September, attributes his longevity to a desire to make his family proud of his self-assuredness and love of the game.

Youngs turned 17 years old when he became Leicester’s youngest player ever, and he continues to truck almost 20 years later.

He attributes his improved sports science, lessening his workload, and good fortune, while claiming that taking time off from the big game can also aid in recovery.

We used to practice twice per week, but now we don’t think about doing that, according to Youngs.

Recovery and body maintenance are more important, according to the report. That means nothing has changed.

International rugby also has its toll, but some of us have left later in our careers, which has given us a chance to recharge for a few more seasons.

What position you play is also a factor, with Warhorse prop Cole somewhat out of the ordinary while Youngs and Care are scrum-halves and Goode and Brown full-backs.

I compete against the big boys in a different sport. More stress is on the joints than the collisions, according to Care.

What position you play unquestionably affects your ability to live long and prosper. However, I would say that we are all very resolute. “Youngs adds.

That is also beneficial because you must be willing to continue doing it for as long as you do.

Care agrees that “playing for a really cool team and my love for the game have both made me want to stay longer.”

Although Care has already won his most recent game for his beloved Quins, Goode could still have a shot at a record-equaling seventh title, even though Saracens need results on Saturday for the final day of the regular season.

The Tigers’ place in the top four, a likely home semi-final, and a chance to win next month’s showpiece could also be in the hands of the Leicester trio of Youngs, Cole, and Brown, which would give them a fairytale ending.

Retinol Youth Renewal Serum (5ml) is the last one. With each use, firmer, brighter-looking skin is created with this concentrated serum, which is small but powerful. It helps reduce environmental stressors while clearly reducing the signs of ageing thanks to the antioxidant-rich swertia flower extract.

This is a great place to start if you’ve been considering how to incorporate retinol into your daily routine because reviewers have praised how it treats skin gently and doesn’t irritate the skin excessively. I adore Murad products, one customer wrote. Retinol in your 30s is a “must,” and this is a good, mild one. I’ve been using it for a while and I really like the smell.

We’re big fans of a few other low-cost retinol products, including First Aid Beauty’s 0.3% Retinol Complex Serum ($44) and Medik8’s Crystal Retinal ($69).

Saudis In ‘Difficult’ Talks To Keep Ronaldo Next Season

After the star footballer suggested he was leaving Al Nassr, Saudi Arabian officials are engaged in “difficult” negotiations to keep Cristiano Ronaldo there, according to a source with knowledge of the talks.

The Saudi Pro League (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football, is still being worked out, according to the source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The source continued, “The first step is a transfer to Al Hilal with the chance to play for the FIFA Club World Cup or Al Ahli, who is currently the Asia champion.”

The Saudi Pro League ended with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once more, according to Ronaldo’s overnight post, “This chapter is over.”

The 32 clubs participating in the Club World Cup will have a special transfer window open between June 1 and June 10 to sign players.

The former United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Sporting Lisbon star will play in the enlarged tournament in the United States starting on June 14 according to FIFA president Gianni Infantino last week, saying “there are discussions” about the former United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Lisbon star.

Ronaldo, 40, left Manchester United for Al Nassr in 2022, and his contract expires at the end of the month.

“Ronaldo’s presence has played a significant role in the development of the Saudi league over the past two and a half. He “opens the door” for Saudi Arabia’s elite and emerging players, the source continued.

Two dead after crowds rush UN aid warehouse amid Gaza hunger crisis

As humanitarian aid slowly pours into the beleaguered territory on the verge of famine, crowds of Palestinians stormed a UN aid warehouse in central Gaza, killing at least two people.

Late on Wednesday, the World Food Programme reported that “hordes of hungry people” entered the al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, to search for food supplies.

Initial reports indicate that the tragic incident resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries for several others, according to a statement from WFP on X, adding that the details were still being confirmed.

“Gaza needs food assistance right away. Only by doing this can you reassure people that they won’t starve. WFP “requests urgently safe, unobstructed humanitarian access to enable orderly food distribution across Gaza immediately,” it continued.

Aid organizations have expressed concern that the amount of humanitarian supplies is not nearly enough despite Israel’s decision to end an 11-week blockade last week following growing international pressure.

When everyone in Gaza was at risk of famine, UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Sigrid Kaag, told the Security Council, the amount of aid Israel had so far allowed was “comparable to a lifeboat after the ship has sunk.”

At least 10 people were killed at the site of aid distribution

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, stated to the Security Council that Israel would allow aid “for the immediate future” through the UN and the privately funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

Danon urged the UN to “put their egos aside and work with the new mechanism.”

The UN and other aid organizations have argued that the private aid program is not impartial.

Jonathan Whittall, a senior UN aid official for the occupied Palestinian territories, described this new scheme as “containment-based rationing that legitimizes a policy of deprivation by design.”

The UN has declined to participate in this initiative because it is “logically unworkable and goes against humanitarian principles” by utilizing aid as a tool in Israel’s wider efforts to depopulate Gaza, he said.

According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, at least 10 people were killed on Tuesday and Wednesday when Israeli forces fired shots at Palestinians seeking aid at the GHF site in southern Gaza.

When thousands of hungry Palestinians stormed the GHF site on Tuesday, injuries totaled dozens.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the foundation reported that it distributed the equivalent of 840, 262 meals.

Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of dozens.

At least 30 people were killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza on Thursday, according to medical sources told Al Jazeera.

Seven people were found dead in a kindergarten in Jabalia, northern Gaza, according to medical sources.

What does Elf buying Rhode mean for us in the UK? A beauty editor takes a deep dive

For UK fans, Mirror Head of Beauty Zoe Cripps examines what E. L. F’s purchase of Hailey Bieber’s Rhode brand means.

The $1 billion sale means good things for UK shoppers(Image: Getty)

I didn’t plan on coming up with the news that Rhode had been purchased by e. L. F, but we are now, and I want to explain why it’s exciting for us in the UK. I’ve been working in beauty for more than ten years, and I’ve seen numerous large and small brands’ acquisitions.

Hailey Bieber launched Rhode in mid-2022 after she, a model, noticed a gap in the industry for simplified, high-performance skincare essentials. This makes the brand a newborn in beauty world years. Acquisitions of this scale tend to happen when a brand establishes credibility over time, proving it has strong growth, has demonstrated strong shopper loyalty and continues to thrive well beyond its first ‘viral’ moment. Rhode has ticked all of these boxes, plus plenty more, in under three years—a rarity.

To put it another way, a group of dermatologists founded the market-leader CeraVe in 2005 before selling it to L’Oreal in 2017. Before an investor decided to bid, which is almost a decade more than Rhode, the project took 12 years to demonstrate its viability.

E. l. f, however, is gaining ground against rivals like L’Oreal and Estee Lauder in its early investment in young, successful beauty brands. For instance, it purchased Naturium, a skincare company Susan Yara founded, for $355 million (roughly £279 million) in 2023. Another extremely quick sale for the brand, which was only established in 2019. However, with Rhode being purchased for $1 billion (£790 million) in three years, what? That takes home the prize for one of the brand’s youngest investments in beauty. However, Rhode’s performance over the next three years is said to be a determining factor in the roughly $200 million figure.

What does this mean for consumers in the UK Rhodes?

Meghan Markle’s signature £26 collagen cream is entering the Love Island residence.

Onto the good stuff. As part of the deal, Hailey is staying on as Chief Creative Officer and Head of Innovation. This means we’re still going to be getting products of a similar creative calibre. Hailey has proven her credibility when it comes to creating useful, innovative, skin-friendly and cost-effective skincare and makeup products, and we’re going to see more launches from the inner workings of her brain. And when I say more, I mean more launches than we’re used to seeing from Rhode right now. E..l.f buying the brand means it has the cash to launch products faster, which is set to spell a catalogue expansion by as early as autumn.

Additionally, we don’t have access to the brand in any stores like Boots, LookFantastic, or Sephora because Rhode is currently only selling through a direct-to-consumer (DTC) model, which has its own website at rhodeskin.com. Additionally, there is a £7 delivery fee for orders under £70 for orders placed with us, which is unusual considering that many other e-tailers now offer free next-day deliveries. With Sephora already confirmed to stock its products from autumn 2025, E. L. F.’s Rhode win means we’ll be able to access the brand much more.

Another benefit of this purchase is that Hailey now serves as E. L. F.’s strategic advisor in addition to the UK market, and E. L. F fans in particular. That means what? The majority of us are anticipating a Rhode x E. L. F. collaboration that will undoubtedly sell like hot cakes. This also implies that Hailey’s inventive creator mind will lead to some fresh and exciting innovations from E. l. f.

What a beauty editor purchases from Rhode Island on a regular basis.

Do you want to try some Rhode products for yourself? Here is the constant purchase I make.

Rhode Pocket Blush

A soft, all-natural flush that lasts all day and smoothly glides on. With a radiant, non-greasy finish and a light formula, this lightweight formula leaves cheeks feeling baby-soft. Piggy is my go-to shade of baby pink. It has now been repurchased twice. For her ideal pop of color, my friend with a darker complexion swears by Freckle, a peach shade.

Rhode Glazing Milk

A light, nutrient-packed essence that instantly restores the skin’s barrier and leaves a radiant, fresh glow. It’s Hailey’s (and my!) the foundation for makeup and calming the skin is always the first step. It’s probably the first skincare line to truly become popular when it first launched.

Rhode Peptide Lips

This lip liner, one of Rhode’s newest releases, has a silicone smudger at the end to diffuse the lip line and give a smudgy, plump lip effect. It glides on effortlessly to give lips a contoured appearance while delivering potent ingredients that clearly increase lip volume. It is smoother and more seamless than a lip liner.
