Harry Kane Claims First-Ever Trophy As Bayern Munich Win Bundesliga

After second-placed Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 at Freiburg, Bayern Munich won the title of German champions for the 34th time on Sunday, handing striker Harry Kane his first major trophy.

In order for defending Bundesliga champions Leverkusen to delay the title party, Bayern needed to win 3-3 at RB Leipzig on Saturday when the Bavarians came from two goals down to take the lead before conceding a stoppage-time equalizer.

In the final ten minutes, Leverkusen scored twice before falling two goals.

Bayern reclaimed the title at the first attempt following Leverkusen’s 11-year reign last season, but Xabi Alonso’s side were unable to find a third.

Alonso congratulated his former team, who won three Bundesliga titles while playing for Bayern.

“Bayern congratulations. A deserved championship, indeed. They deserved the shield because they were a more consistent team all season, Alonso told DAZN.

A group of Bayern players gathered on Sunday to watch the Leverkusen game in Munich, including Kane, who had never previously won silverware.

The England captain was ruled out of action at Leipzig, but he will make an appearance at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, where Bayern will receive the Bundesliga shield at full-time.

Leverkusen’s chances of defending their title were already slim because Bayern’s goal difference was far superior.

Before half-time, Freiburg’s Maximilian Eggestein scored a stunning goal from outside the box, and Piero Hincapie was pressured into setting up an own goal shortly after the break.

With eight minutes left, Florian Wirtz carved through the middle of the field before firing the ball in off the post for a spectacular solo goal.

In stoppage time, Jonathan Tah scored the winning goal, but Leverkusen could not find the third goal that would have extended their title run.

With only two games left, Leverkusen is eight points clear of Bayern, who became the first team in history to win the title without losing.

With the loss of the faint title hopes, Leverkusen’s focus will shift to preserving Alonso and Wirtz, who could both leave in the summer.

Alonso has been heavily linked with Real Madrid, where he spent five seasons as a player, but has an extension to his contract at Leverkusen until 2026.

Although Wirtz’s contract expires in 2027, the German international is reportedly considering a big-money move to Bayern.

Tah, who has already stated that he will leave the club for free after ten years at Leverkusen, described his team’s “too little intensity” and “we had too few runs in behind. Today, it didn’t work.

The German centre-back has been linked with moves to Bayern and Barcelona, but he said “we’ll see” where he plays next.

Leverkusen extended their home-based unbeaten streak to 33 games with the late goal, breaking Bayern’s all-time all-time mark in the Bundesliga.

Freiburg is now fourth in the Champions League standings, one point clear of Borussia Dortmund. Freiburg have never participated in the best competition in Europe.

Holstein Kiel’s 3-1 victory over Augsburg on Sunday helped them maintain their goal of avenging the drop.

Alexander Bernhardsson scored a double and Shuto Machino scored the winning goal, leaving Kiel one point off Heidenheim in the relegation play-off spot.

With a victory over local rivals Mainz in Sunday’s late game, Eintracht Frankfurt can significantly advance to the top four and Champions League qualification.

Maddison injury ‘doesn’t look great’ – Postecoglou

Before Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Bodo/Glimt, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou claims James Maddison’s injury “does not look great.”

In the first leg of Thursday’s game, Spurs defeated the Norwegian side 3-1, but Maddison was forced off in the second half due to a broken leg.

Spurs’ 1-1 draw at West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday did not include the attacking midfielder in the matchday squad.

“We’ll just wait and see,” he said. On Monday, we should likely get some clarity.

“I’ll just wait and see,” the statement read.

Due to a knock, Dominic Solanke, who won the game in the middle of the week, was also unsporting.

Postecoglou was more optimistic about the striker’s chances for Norway’s return leg.

Dom is improving, Postecoglou claimed to BBC Sport. He should be fine for Thursday, we say. To get more money, we simply let him go [against West Ham].

However, the medical team is reasonably certain that he will be okay on Thursday.

Changes affect rhythm and fluency, according to the article.

Postecoglou’s side ended their three-game losing streak by making eight changes while having the priority of the Europa League.

Only Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, and Guglielmo Vicario made the first-leg starting lineup, with only one other player remaining.

The Spurs boss told BBC Sport, “It’s something we’ve been doing for a while because we’ve had to.”

We’ve had a terrible run with injuries, which, to be fair, haven’t yet recovered. But it made sense with the opportunity [in the Europa League] we have ahead of us.

In a completely different defense, Richarlison, Kevin Danso, Ben Davies, and Djed Spence made up the front three, along with Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert, who both contributed to the 15th-minute opener.

With just three games left, Tottenham is 16th overall with 38 points from 35 games, one point clear of West Ham and one point behind Everton and Manchester United.

Postecoglou, however, expressed his pride in his players’ deeds in the derby.

Making so many changes is not simple, and it will have an impact on the team’s fluency and even rhythm, he said.

They made great efforts, I thought. They had a plan and were disciplined.

“I still believed we were dangerous going the other way because we tried to disarm their threat, and they had some respectable firepower at our disposal.”

If Bodo/Glimt does well on Thursday, either Manchester United or Athletic Bilbao will host them in the May 21 final.

England’s Cox injured as Rew gives Somerset chance

Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, Division One of the Rothesay County Championship (day three).

Essex 206 &amp, 259: Cox 103* (retired hurt), Pretorius 3-36

Somerset 145 &amp, 216-6: Rew 65*, Harmer 3-80

To defeat Essex (3 points), Somerset (3 points) needs 105 more runs.

On the third day of Somerset’s third-day County Championship Division One game at Taunton, an injury to centurion Jordan Cox severely damaged an impressive Essex display.

Cox, who was recently called up to the England squad, increased his overnight score of 61 to an unbeaten 103 as his team increased their total for the second innings from 163-4 to 259 all out.

However, he immediately broke down clutching his lower left after taking the single that put him on 99 and reached three figures.

When Somerset attempted to score 321 on a pitch that still provided assistance to seam and spin, Cox was replaced in the field and did not play any further innings for Essex.

Lewis Gregory scored 57 as they came to a close of 216-6, and James Rew scored 65.

Tom Westley, the coach for Essex, informed Cox that there was a problem with his side but that a scan would not be available until Monday.

We’ll be aware of a lot more then, according to Westley. It was unfortunate that he was unable to continue after playing a fantastic innings.

Cox and Michael Pepper quickly increased their overnight lead of 224 in the first hour of play.

Cox celebrated Craig Overton’s introduction with a magnificent extra cover drive for four before sweeping Jack Leach for boundaries off successive deliveries. When misfortune struck, Pepper leant strong support, leading to a total of 234-4.

Cox had experienced some discomfort, and Leach’s quick single off the end of his ton caused him to prostrate himself. He was ushered to his feet after a number of minutes of treatment, but he only continued for four more minutes before passing the 155-ball hundred mark.

After finishing off the lead past 300, Pepper glanced a four off Overton, but Migael Pretorius suffered the first of three victims in a row, leaving him leg before going on the back foot.

Sam Cook top-edged a pull shot to be caught at fine leg while Noah Thain edged to Rew. As Essex dropped from 252-4 to 259 all out, Leach contributed with Kasun Rajitha and Simon Harmer’s wickets.

On a pitch that had aided bowlers from the beginning, a lead of 321 still appeared to be in order. The 91-5 was left at tea as Somerset’s fragile top order again failed, it appeared.

Without allowing a run on the board, Andy Umeed edged a catch to second slip off Jamie Porter, and Archie Vaughan top-edged a shot to leg off Cook to give a straightforward catch from mid-wicket.

Tom Lammonby fell for 30 yards after Harmer’s introduction from eighth over, a ball that went past the left-hander’s forward defensive shot and hit his back pad. Harmer came in first and struck first with the total of 54.

Tom Abell made it 29 before a sharply turning delivery from Harmer clipped his off-spin and made it 71-5.

With only seven more runs remaining, Somerset’s player, who is currently 13 years old, reverse-spreads the spinner and is ruled to have got a little too much before Dean Elgar slips.

At the tea break, Skipper Gregory and Rew had a positive attitude and both left for the final session.

In a counterattacking partnership that only served to highlight previous batting inadequacies, anything that seemed even slightly loose was mercilessly punished with boundaries. Off 80 balls and seven fours, Gregory sprinted to half-century.

Rew’s performance was equally impressive, going 37 against Rajitha, whose captain flashed a four-for-four cut to bring up the 100-point plateau. However, Gregory made a second forced shot with the same result, only to have a thick inside edge strewn across his stumps.

Rew’s 10th four, which was third-man off Cook, resulted in a fluent fifty off of 91 balls and the Somerset 200.

A fresh attack and the second new ball from tomorrow kept him in the game at the end, with a further 105 required.

Chelsea Beat Champions Liverpool To Boost Top-Five Push

As Liverpool suffered a hangover from the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Chelsea increased their chances of making it to the Champions League with a 3-1 victory.

Through Enzo Fernandez’s early strike at Stamford Bridge, Enzo Maresca’s side took the lead.

Virgil van Dijk’s late reply for Liverpool came after Jarell Quansah’s own goal in the second half.

The champions only suffered their third league defeat of the season when Cole Palmer scored in stoppage-time.

After winning a record-equalling 20th English title last weekend with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham, lacklustre Liverpool had little to play for. Chelsea had every motivation to win a priceless three points.

The Blues are currently in fifth place, one point ahead of fourth-placed Newcastle, who hope to reclaim the Champions League with a top-five finish after drawing at Brighton 1-1 earlier on Sunday.

If they defeat Crystal Palace on Monday, Nottingham Forest will share the lead with 63 points with Chelsea and Newcastle.

With three games to go, the top five rivalry will have a thrilling conclusion, leaving Manchester City, who are currently third, one point clear of Chelsea.

Chelsea return to action on Thursday in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League semifinal against Djurgardens, with a 4-1 lead over Djurgardens expected to bring them to the final of Maresca’s tenure.

Liverpool’s only other victories in a merry-making league season came against Fulham in April and Nottingham Forest in September.

Arne Slot’s men played as though the title party had rendered them groggy on yet another unsuccessful trip to west London.

When the Reds entered the pitch before kick-off, Chelsea’s players gathered to give Liverpool a guard of honor.

Large sections of the Chelsea fanbase booed as Liverpool made their entrance, but the gesture of respect didn’t go down well with them.

After Slot rested Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Andrew Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate, a much-changed lineup emerged through the divisive welcome.

Liverpool supporters chanted “champions” and waved banners with references to their 20 titles in one Stamford Bridge corner as they celebrated their new status.

Chelsea opened the scoring in just three minutes when Fernandez was picked out by Pedro Neto’s cross and the unmarked Argentine midfielder slotted home from eight yards with Liverpool’s defense disorganized.

Moments later, when Noni Madueke danced through the Reds back four with ease and was inches away from double-dotting Chelsea’s advantage, he scuffed his shot just wide of the far post.

After a risky raid, Neto fired narrowly wide after Nicolas Jackson’s cross slammed off the crossbar.

In the 56th minute, Maresca’s men struck once more in an odd manner.

Palmer slammed past Madueke for a low cross before the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Van Dijk quickly made a clearance that smacked into Quansah and rebounded into the net during the subsequent scramble.

Before Palmer hit the post as Chelsea turned the screw, Alisson Becker made a good save from Jadon Sancho.

Robert Sanchez was gifted a header in the 85th minute by Van Dijk.

With the penalty converted by Palmer for his first goal since January, Quansah tripped Moises Caicedo, who had already lost in a close game.

Bayern’s ‘James Bond’ – how Kane clinched his first trophy

Harry Kane has long been criticized for his inability to win a trophy with a club or nation despite his many goals and individual accomplishments.

“There are many people who, throughout my career, only talk about the fact I haven’t won a title yet”, the England captain said recently, as Munich, Bayern’s Bundesliga crown began to look more inevitable. It would be nice to stop a few of them, he said.

Kane even saw the irony in the fact his 14-year wait for a senior trophy might end while he watched on from the stands as Bayern faced RB Leipzig on Saturday, having been handed a one-game suspension following his fifth yellow card of the season last week.

The 31-year-old said, “It’s kind of my story that I’ll miss the Leipzig game.” “But no worries, I’ll celebrate more than anyone else”.

Before a stoppage-time Leipzig equalizer caused the delay, Kane even made his way to the touchline, where he was ready to join the party, with second-placed Bayer Leverkusen drawing 2-2 at Freiburg on Sunday.

That saw Vincent Kompany’s side secure the German title, and means Kane has finally put to rest the notion that a glittering individual career may finish without any silverware.

After the title was announced, the Leverkusen striker, along with fellow England international Eric Dier, and the rest of their Bayern team-mates, had been following the game and had posted a video of them singing “we are the champions.”

“I’m thrilled for him because he deserves it so much”, former Munich, Bayern and Tottenham Hotspur striker Jurgen Klinsmann told BBC Sport.

“Over the past ten years, he has demonstrated it.” His numbers are absolutely insane and he will do that for another couple of years because he’s in top shape still, he’s fit, he’s hungry.

Getty Images

Kane’s career has not followed the trajectory one might expect for England’s all-time record goalscorer. Former youth coach Alex Inglethorpe claimed that he wasn’t even among the top players in the age-group when it came to the top talents at Tottenham.

He was still a youth player the last time Spurs won a trophy, the League Cup in 2008, but earned his breakthrough with the first-team squad and signed his first professional deal in July 2010. Additionally, Leyton Orient had difficult-grafting loan deals with Millwall and Leicester in the Championship and Norwich in the Premier League.

Once Kane established himself at White Hart Lane, he blossomed into Spurs ‘ best homegrown player of a generation, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 games and climbing to second in the Premier League ranks with 213, behind only Alan Shearer’s 260.

Despite all the goals and three Premier League Golden Boots, a decade in Lilywhite was marred by a string of near-misses, including a Champions League title defeat suffered by Liverpool, twice as runners-up in the competition, and defeats to Leicester and Chelsea in successive seasons.

That story repeated itself with England, as they were runners-up at the past two European Championships and beaten in the 2018 World Cup semi-final by Croatia, despite Kane winning the Golden Boot in Russia seven years ago and finishing as joint top-scorer at last summer’s Euros.

Klinsmann, who also won his only championship after moving to Bayern for Tottenham in 1995, continued, “I always said that if Harry leaves Spurs, he will have the opportunity to win titles.”

Indeed, trophies seemed like a foregone conclusion when Kane joined Bayern for an initial 100m euros (£86.4m) in August 2023 – a club who had won 11 successive Bundesliga titles before his arrival.

Bayern lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup at Allianz Arena with the England captain coming off the bench for the final 30 minutes and Kane even had a chance to win silverware on his debut.

Was he cursed? Some people may have thought that the third-tier Saarbrucken had then knocked Bayern out of the German Cup.

Leverkusen ran away with the league as Bayern finished third, their lowest position since 2011, while Thomas Tuchel’s side were beaten by eventual winners Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

Taufig Khalil, a commentator for ARD Radio, claimed that “people made jokes about him.”

” Munich, Bayern won the German championship 11 years in a row, Harry Kane came for 100m-plus and the next season Munich, Bayern did not win a single trophy!

‘ People love him ‘ – the importance of fitting in

Harry Kane at OktoberfestGetty Images

After becoming the Bundesliga’s record signing, Kane never wavered about his desire to keep improving. He spoke recently about studying the game’s greats and having the drive to consistently be one of the world’s best.

Robert Lewandowski, who left Bayern in 2022 as their second-all-time top scorer behind Gerd Muller, is under pressure to do so.

“Munich, Bayern has a huge tradition of number nines”, explained Klinsmann.

“They always have a special eye,” he said. To fill that spot is just an honour. It’s something incredibly special. He knows that he is followed closely by everyone”.

And rival fans see it as a privilege to have Kane in Germany, Khalil said: “Wow, that’s big”!

Yet there is no superstar ego on boy from east London.

He is regarded as extremely professional and a leader among the squad, a player that many of his younger team-mates admire and who is very respectful, whether it be during training or as part of fulfilling the numerous media and partner obligations that come with representing a German giant like Bayern.

“He has a royal approach”, added Khalil. He greets everyone inside the stadium and is very welcoming. If there is a moment he doesn’t want to talk in the mixed zone, then he excuses himself. Many other players attempt to avoid looking in the media when they enter or use the phone while wearing headphones.

” Normally he stops, he is always ready to talk. In that club, he is unquestionably the leader. He gives a lot of that James Bond gratitude – he is the striker with the licence to score! “

Kane has embraced the culture, attended Oktoberfest, visited supporters’ clubs, and taken German lessons despite the joke that he had made it known that his children would eventually learn the language from him.

” What he’s done extremely well is adapt to Bavaria with so much ease, “said Klinsmann”. He embraced the lifestyle there, and the city and his family simply adapted.

“It’s an international place, Munich, so it’s not too problematic but still, you’ve got to go to another country and keep your work-rate at the highest level while figuring out that your family are comfortable and having a good time”.

He has a following too. Kane quickly struck up a friendship with Bayern’s all-time leading appearance-maker Thomas Muller, who will leave at the end of the season, and is known to play golf with the Germany forward and midfielder Konrad Laimer, among others.

Both England internationals are regarded as important to team chemistry at Bayern, and he is close friends with former Spurs team-mate Eric Dier, another well-liked player in the squad.

Harry Kane and Eric DierGetty Images

‘ No-one deserves title more than Kane ‘

The humble yet ruthless goal-getter’s perseverance paid off after six final defeats, three against Spurs, two against England, and one against Bayern.

Kane’s first German title is Munich, Bayern’s 34th, but there can be no doubting the Englishman’s importance to Kompany’s side.

The former Manchester City and Belgium captain said, “It helps when you have a top player who wants to run and fight for the team like a youth player.” “I played against him as an opponent and he has become better with age”.

Kane, who has scored 11 goals in the Champions League this year, is the division’s top scorer, with 24 goals and 36 in all competitions this year.

That was a competition in which Bayern were desperate to reach the final at their home stadium in Munich, but Kane missed a big chance in the quarter-final first leg against Inter and, despite scoring in the return in Milan, they were knocked out.

In the end, we spoke with him and he said, “Yes, everybody is right expect me to make that goal, I didn’t do it, that’s fate,” Khalil retorted critics who claim Kane doesn’t score in “big games.”

“Whenever there are bad moments, after the match, in the mixed zone, Harry walks through and he stops, he is talking, he accepts the situation”.

Leverkusen also knocked Bayern out of the German Cup, but with Kane at the heart, Bayern have led from the front in the Bundesliga, bar a brief lull in March when they lost at home to lowly Bochum.

His form during this title run is a continuation of what began in his debut season, where he netted 36 times – only Gerd Muller and Lewandowski have scored more in a single Bundesliga campaign.

Klinsmann praised the team’s ability to connect with its members. “He plays in a system that he’s getting fed by attacking midfielders.

He has done a fantastic job from day one and is incredibly important to the Bayern side.

In April, he became the fastest player to hit 60 goals in the competition, doing so in 60 appearances to break Erling Haaland’s record by five games. In that period, he also contributed 15 assists, making goal involvement on average every 72 minutes.

What next for Kane?

Harry Kane celebratesGetty Images

Khalil anticipates Kane’s pursuit of more titles, and Bayern’s focus will soon shift to winning the Fifa Club World Cup this summer.

” The moment Munich, Bayern went out of the Champions League, they started to talk about the Club World Cup, “he said”. They would earn a lot of money from it because it is another significant trophy, an international award.

That could play a role in Kane’s future and whether Bayern can afford to add widely linked, but expensive, target Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

Kane’s contract runs until 2027, according to Khalil, with “everyone wants him to stay.”

” The question is, would Florian Wirtz together with Jamal Musiala, the two German youngsters playing side by side, work with a central box striker and how much money do you want to spend on Harry Kane for next season?

“I’ll definitely see him in the Bundesliga next year,” he said, “for me, that’s stupid.” They have to find another way to finance Florian Wirtz.

“I believe Harry Kane will be around at least for another year.”

‘We are only going up’ – London City in WSL to stay

Images courtesy of Getty

A figure wearing a long white dress, high heels, and sunglasses stood out among the London City Lionesses’ teal shirts with the word “winners” on them.

Since taking over Lionesses last summer, Michele Kang has not relinquished her business, but with the promotion to the Women’s Super League under her belt.

The celebrations at St. Andrew’s after Lionesses held on to a stunning 2-2 draw against championship rivals Birmingham City to advance to the WSL were somewhat unusual, with club owner Kang permitted to carry the trophy onto the field.

She told Sky Sports, “We have been building a team that is at least in the mid-tier WSL.”

“When I first arrived, a lot of people were very concerned for me and questioned, “How can you do this because you don’t have a men’s team from which to draw the equity, the brand, and the fanbase?”

To accomplish this in a year as an independent team is evidence that anything is possible with proper funding and resources. This provides evidence that we are only increasing.

The first team to join the WSL is the London City Lionesses, which has no affiliation with a men’s club. Since splitting from Millwall in 2019, they have been a fixture in the second tier but have experienced a turbocharged state of affairs since their wealthy American owner, who is now 82, arrived in 2023.

LCL is “put on the map” thanks to promotion.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah (left)Images courtesy of Getty
Last summer, Lionesses made a number of splashy acquisitions, including Jocelyn Precheur, who previously led PSG to the Champions League semi-finals.

Along with 2010 World Cup champion Saki Kumagai, former Barcelona midfielder Maria Perez, and seasoned Swedish international Sofia Jakobsson, former WSL champion Kosovare Asllani led several eye-catching arrivals on the pitch.

Promotion was only secured on the final day of this draw at second-placed Birmingham, who came from 2-0 down and worked hard until the very end to ensure them a victory.

Kang has spent a lot of money, both wisely and boldly. With a particular emphasis on women’s fitness needs, Kent has plans to build a state-of-the-art training facility. She has previously pressed for more money and research into the effects of sport on women’s bodies and delivered her claims without fals.

She stated that the hiring team will meet on Monday morning to discuss how to avoid Crystal Palace and Bristol City from the WSL last year.

And it is interesting to note that the two key players at St. Andrew’s were young British talents rather than recent headliners.

Izzy Goodwin, the championship top scorer this season with 16 strikes in 18 games, scored the first goal. It will be interesting to watch how she ascends after Sheffield United and the Lionesses both had high second-tier goals.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, signed in 2023, scored the second. In the opening period, she also made a crucial goalline clearance.

Although the WSL is a completely different league, “we have the experience, the players, the support, the fans, and hopefully they will continue to grow.” We “take each game as it comes,” Boye-Hlorkah said, “We put ourselves on the map.”

She empowers women throughout the game, she claims.

Isobel GoodwinImages courtesy of Getty

Lionesses’ desire to resurrect their position in the top flight will depend on that combination of investment and existing talent. They will want to maintain the spirit that made them triumph over Birmingham and that made them the championship scorers at the end of the season.

However, it will require a prudent use of the funds. In a deal worth £65m over five years across the WSL and Championship, clubs in the WSL receive three times as much TV money as those in the Championship.

The agreement is worth about $800,000 to WSL clubs, and $ 270,000 to Championship teams. Given that Lionesses don’t have any financial backing and are not affiliated with a men’s Premier League or Championship side, staying up might be necessary.

They will play all of their home games at 5, 000-capacity Hayes Lane, which they share with League Two men’s side Bromley, without having access to Premier League stadiums for big games.

The highest-paid WSL players make about $ 300,000 annually, which is more than the Championship club’s annual salary. The checkbook for Gang must be blank and open.

However, she and the players are up for the challenge, based on the available evidence.

Former England international Anita Asante told BBC Sport, “I have a lot of admiration for Michele Kang because I think she empowers women throughout the game, across all levels.”

She says, “It’s because she believes in the value of women’s football, and she’s driving that investment,” and she wants her players to continue exceling.
