UPDATED: Youths Protest In Abuja, Demand VDM’s Release

Scores of youths have taken to the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, in protest of the arrest of a popular rights activist and social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Verydarkman (VDM), by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The protesters, who marched from the headquarters of the EFCC to the premises of a commercial bank where he was reportedly arrested, held placards with inscriptions such as “Release Very Dark Man,” and “Seyi Tinubu, Are You Involved?,” among others.

VDM was reported to have been arrested on May 2 by the EFCC following some petitions it received against him.

He was said to be in the custody of the EFCC as of the time of filing the report.

Confirming the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), his legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, said, “A team of policemen arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone.

“This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime.”

In a follow-up tweet, Adeyanju added that VDM was arrested alongside a friend, identified only as C Park. ,” he said.

But the protesters, who were sighted at the Wuse area, just right after the Berger bridge, described VDM’s arrest and detention as illegal.

They also demanded transparency from the authorities as they vowed to take their grievance to the Nigerian Human Rights Commission in the Maitama district of the nation’s capital.

The arrest of the activist had also received criticisms from some prominent Nigerians.

The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, on Sunday condemned the arrest of the social media influencer, saying that the action was carried out in a manner that left many Nigerians worried.

Obi, in a statement, explained that the manner in which VDM was arrested closely resembled an abduction, “a disturbing method that not only creates fear but also risks being mimicked by criminal elements”.

He emphasised that if Nigerians began to struggle to distinguish between legitimate arrests and unlawful abductions, “we will lose a vital layer of national security and accountability”.

“This trend is not new. We must recall that even our esteemed judges, the last line of defence for justice, have suffered similar indignities in recent years. When those who interpret the law are treated with such disregard, it is difficult to expect that ordinary citizens will feel protected under the law,” he said.

Obi added, “The backlash directed at GTBank, allegedly linked to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Otse’s arrest, has had serious reputational consequences. At a time when investor confidence is already fragile, we must do all we can to avoid actions that tarnish institutions or undermine the trust of both citizens and the international community.

“One cannot help but ask: was it impossible to invite Mr. Otse in a civil, transparent, and legal manner? Would that not have spared Nigerians, GTBank, and our national image the unnecessary shame and losses we now witness?”

‘Free My Guy,’ Davido Joins Call

Similarly, Nigerian music star, Davido, has called for the immediate release of VDM.

Davido, in a post, said, “Outside all the noise, it’s good to see that the good one does actually impact lives and people actually appreciate! The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging, makes one want to do more for the masses. FREE MY GUY.”

Pete Doherty reveals type 2 diabetes ‘wake-up call’ that turned his world upside down

The guitarist for the Libertines admitted to being told to stay off his feet or risk having his toes amputated, which revealed a terrifying insight into his diagnosis.

Rock icon Pete Doherty has shared a shocking update on his health challenges, opening up about his battle with type 2 diabetes, after admitting he was diagnosed with the chronic ailment in 2024.

In a startling revelation earlier this year, The Libertines guitarist was cautioned to “stay off his feet” or face the grim prospect of toe amputation. Currently, the 46-year-old is unable to slip into regular footwear and has instead turned to clunky orthopaedic sandals for relief.

Pete acknowledged in a candid conversation with The Sunday Times Magazine that despite his recent diagnosis, the illness probably developed years prior as a result of continued substance abuse.

He revealed how he handled a terrifying situation in January, when his extremities suddenly lost sensation, turning two of his toes ominously black. I’m currently unable to wear regular shoes, Pete said. It was a clear wake-up call indeed.

The star described the risk of “losing his toes,” calling it a “touch and go” moment, underscoring the urgent need for a radical change in both his diet and personal habits.

Since late 2019, Pete has acknowledged that excessive drinking has made his condition worse. He continued, “I now allow myself a gin and tonic once a week, but I’ve basically stopped drinking and have raised my blood sugar to a good level, so my toes are healing. However, smoking doesn’t help.

You could lose your foot if the inflammation gets too bad.

Pete also confessed his other guilty pleasures, including Comté, a type of French cheese, and Comté on toast. Sleeping is my guilty pleasure.

What does type 2 diabetes exactly mean?

The NHS describes type 2 diabetes as arising when a patient’s insulin, a hormone, either isn’t effective, or isn’t produced in sufficient quantities.

This malfunction causes bloodstream glucose (sugar) levels to rise. Adults are most frequently affected, but it can also affect children.

What signs indicate type 2 diabetes?

As Pete pointed out, symptoms of type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health issues like vision loss, organ failure, cardiac conditions, and sometimes even needing an amputation.

Type 2 diabetes sufferers typically exhibit a number of observable symptoms:

  • Feeling very worn out
  • more peeing than usual
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • attempting to lose weight without success

What is the treatment for type 2 diabetes?

Diabetes is manageable through lifestyle modifications, despite continuing to be incurable.

The NHS advises sticking to a nutrient-dense diet that includes both legumes, including chickpeas and lentils, as well as whole grains like wholemeal bread and oats.

Oasis ‘dropping iconic song from tour set list’ due to Gary Glitter connection

One of their alleged hit songs, “Oasis,” was removed from their reunion tour set list due to its association with disgraced singer Gary Glitter.

Oasis are reportedly removed a hit song from the set list of their long-awaited reunion tour due to it’s connection to Gary Glitter. Liam and Noel Gallagher shocked the entire world last year when they announced they brushed their feud under the rug to get back together for a huge tour.

Fans are eager to hear all of the duo’s favorite songs live for the first time since 2009 because they haven’t played together since 2009. Oasis reportedly made the decision to drop their hit song, Hello from their reunion tour lineup due to its ties to disgraced singer Gary Glitter.

The opening track to their 1995 album, What’s the Story, is called Hello. and includes the melody of the original song playing in it along with Gary’s 1973 song Hello, I’m Back Again.

After serving half of his 16-year sentence, the disgraced 80-year-old was released from prison in 2023 after being imprisoned in 2015 for the sexual abuse of three schoolgirls.

Within weeks of breaking his licensing requirements by allegedly downloading images of children online, Glitter was taken back to the Dorset specialist sex offender prison HMP The Verne.

He is now due to go before the Parole Board in the coming months when he could be cleared for release. The news that Glitter could be released from jail again will come as a blow to his victims.

Glitter will have served his full sentence by the time he has served his sentence in 2031. He is eligible for parole hearings every two years.

Speaking to The Sun about Hello being ‘removed’ from the set list, a source claimed the band chose to ‘leave it in the past’. They said: “It would be inappropriate to play it given its connotations to Glitter and his convictions.” The Mirror have reached out to Oasis’ reps for comment.

Meanwhile, Oasis fans have been speculating about the set list on Reddit as they eagerly await the tour to begin. A passionate fan wrote on Reddit: “Honestly, I think Gas Panic! at Wembley 2000 is the best live song Oasis ever did. The whole vibe is unreal-dark, trippy, powerful. That intro alone feels like you’re about to witness something big, and then Liam comes in and just absolutely owns it.

Man, it’s majestic when he sings “an hour to sing for his soul.” Every time, gives me chills. He means it when he says it. His voice is carrying a lot of weight.

“It’s one of those situations where everything works out perfectly: his performance, the band’s energy, the audience’s fury.” Additionally, it demonstrates how seriously underappreciated Standing on the Shoulder of Giants material might be.

However, some fervent supporters quickly point out that the triumphant return of this particular number might not occur given Liam Gallagher’s evolving singing voice.

Nicola Peltz issued stern warning after claims she’s ‘controlling Brooklyn Beckham’

The billionaire has been given a warning over Nicola Peltz’s alleged behavior following Brooklyn Beckham and his wife’s feud with his family, which has reached a new low.

Brooklyn Beckham’s wife Nicola Peltz has been given a warning as her feud with her in-laws deepens. Reports claim that both of Brooklyn’s parents, David and Victoria Beckham, see no way back for the pair.

Brooklyn, 26, is alleged to have “controlled” Nicola, 30, and she is reportedly the catalyst behind the Peltz-Beckham-Beckham feud. After failing to appear at David’s lavish 50th birthday celebrations over the weekend, both David and Victoria are reportedly “done” with her.

Since she and Brooklyn tied the knot in 2022, Nicola and her in-laws have been at odds with each other, according to sources who have now stated that the Spice Girl and former football player are determined to “get their son back.”

Despite being in London, Nicola and Brooklyn have since taken to social media to explain their decision to not attend David’s birthday. Nicola praised her “naunni” and “gina” in a number of retro-themed photos, explaining how much she cherished the memories they left behind.

However, others acknowledged the conflict between Nicola, her husband, and her family, despite some still supporting her on social media. One person said, “I’m sure your husband has deep, loving memories of his family growing up as well.” “True love doesn’t cost a penny, even though you may have wealthy parents,” one more phrase. Stop dictating your man, the screamed.

In the meantime, a third typed: “I hope you and Brook resolve his family rift.” Not tomorrow, but today. You are aware of how precious memories are. Don’t give your husband the gift of that time with his family; he’ll regret it,” said another. A fifth line, “You took your husband away from his because you cherish family so much” was added.

A source who spoke about David’s celebrations claimed that Nicola is believed to be “finds a way to start an argument” and presses her husband to refrain from speaking to his family while Brooklyn had been set on attending the swanky celebrations after telling his parents weeks beforehand.

The source claimed that “Nicola will kick something off and it will blow up before it becomes impossible for him to leave.” They continued to make the claim to the Daily Mail that “it smells of a control thing.” Brooklyn doesn’t feel like he can show up to see his family, but it did happen three times in a week, and the family is undoubtedly certain that this is what happened this time around.

Brooklyn could have chosen to attend a number of events celebrating David’s birthday, according to the source who continued on. He had missed the main event in London, a gathering of friends in France, and a party at Beckham’s sprawling Cotswolds residence.

Instead, Nicola shared snaps of herself and Brooklyn on social media from their hotel room with the pair also heading out to dinner with a friend. Sources have also likened Brooklyn’s relationship with his family to that of Prince Harry’s given his strained connection with the Royal Family since he stepped down as a working royal in January 2020.

Brooklyn’s absence was a “blow” to his famous father, according to a source close to the Beckham family. They stated to us that Brooks had a close relationship with his father when he was a child, but he is now married. There is a separation between Brooklyn and his parents because his wife Nicola is older and more confident in her own right.

Because of the family’s use of social media, they have become a problem and are unable to keep it private. There is a very obvious rift between David and Victoria that needs to be resolved. In recent months, things have escalated.

IOC replaces swimmer’s medals destroyed in LA fires

After the originals were destroyed during the wildfires in Los Angeles, Olympic champion swimmer Gary Hall Jr. received replicas of the 10 medals he won at different Olympic games.

During a ceremony in Lausanne, the 50-year-old American received the medals from Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee.

Hall Jr. thanked the medal winners. Nobody has ever lost ten Olympic medals before, which is probably why.

I’ll take care of these better, I promise.

This word solidarity and its definition, which cannot be removed, “is the realization that outweighs any sense of loss through this process, which cannot be taken away.”

At the 1996, 2000, and 2004, Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sydney, and Athens, Hall competed for the United States, winning five gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, respectively.

However, he was forced to leave his Pacific Palisades home and the medals as the wildfires that claimed at least 29 lives and destroyed large portions of Los Angeles grew.

This was going straight to our hearts when we read your tragic story about losing your house, your possessions, and all of your worldly possessions, according to Bach.

Have scientists solved the mystery of gold’s origin in the universe?

One of astrophysics’ greatest mysteries is how heavy elements like gold came to be. A new study has revealed the origins of the precious metal in the universe.

According to research, explosions in highly magnetized neutron stars, or “magnars,” may have produced gold in the universe.

More information about the study can be found here:

What recent information has been made regarding gold’s origins?

A study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on April 29 finds that a significant amount of heavy metals, including gold, are produced by massive flares from magnetars.

The study, which used 20-year-old archival telescope data from NASA and the European Space Agency telescopes to study how heavy elements like iron and gold were created and distributed throughout the universe, was led by Anirudh Patel, a doctoral student at Columbia University in New York.

In a statement made by Patel in an article on the NASA website, “It’s a pretty fundamental question in terms of the origin of complex matter in the universe.” It’s a fun puzzle that hasn’t been completely resolved, the author claims.

According to the authors, magnetar giant flares could account for 10% of the galaxy’s total weight in terms of heavier elements.

The study’s co-authors are associated with Ohio State University, Columbia University, Charles University in the Czech Republic, Louisiana State University, and the Flatiron Institute in New York.

How did gold get formed on a magnetar, and what is it?

A magnetar is a type of neutron star with a powerful magnetic field because it is highly magnetized. A neutron star is left behind when a massive star explodes, leaving behind a very dense, collapsed core.

According to study coauthor Eric Burns, assistant professor and astrophysicist at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, astronomers believe the first magnetars were created after the first stars about 13.6 billion years ago. The universe was created by the Big Bang a 13 billion years ago.

Magnetars can occasionally release high-energy radiation by acting like a “starquake.” A starquake can sever the magnetar’s crust, much like an earthquake. A magnetar giant flare, a rare explosive event that releases gamma rays, can occasionally be brought with them by magnetar starquakes.

The researchers discovered that giant flares release material from magnetars. They do not yet have a physical explanation for this, though.

The researchers questioned whether magnetar giant flares produced gold as a result of the rapid neutron transformation that transformed lighter atomic nuclei into heavier ones. The number of protons an element has determines its identity. However, an atom can undergo nuclear decay, which can transform a neutron into a proton, if it acquires an additional neutron.

The identity of an element can change as a result of a change in the number of protons. Neutrons are extremely abundant in stars with very high density. Singular atoms can quickly capture a large number of neutrons and go through multiple decays if the neutron star is damaged. This causes much heavier substances like uranium to form.

Prior to this study, only neutron star collisions, or kilonovas, were credited with producing gold. When astronomers used telescopes to study a neutron star collision in 2017, they discovered that it could result in heavy metals like gold, platinum, and lead. However, these collisions are thought to have occurred over the course of several billion years in the universe.

However, the previously incomprehensible archival telescopic data revealed that magnetar giant flares started to form much earlier. Therefore, the study suggests that magnetar giant flares may have produced the first gold.

What comes next?

Following these findings, NASA will embark on a mission in the future. A gamma-ray telescope called COSI is expected to launch in 2027.
