Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,191

On Friday, May 30th, 2018, here is the current situation:

Fighting

  • In its most recent advance, the Russian army claimed on Thursday that it had taken control of three villages in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine.
  • Authorities in Ukraine reported that in five front-line Ukrainian regions, Russian authorities fired 90 drones overnight and that at least seven people died as a result of these strikes.
  • 48 Ukrainian drones were reportedly withdrawn overnight by Russia, including three near Moscow.
  • According to regional governor Alexander Khinshtein, drones launched an attack at night in the western Kursk region of Russia, causing at least one injury to a hospital and apartment complex.
  • Russia’s military announced last week that it had finished ejecting Ukrainian forces from the Russian region, but the Ukrainian military said its forces remained active in a small portion of Kursk.
  • The regional governor of Ukraine’s neighboring Sumy region, who reported fresh fighting in villages close to the border where Russia has been seizing control, reported new fighting. He claimed that as both sides battled for control, various parts of his region were constantly changing hands.
  • According to Sumy Governor Oleh Hryhorov, “Active battles continue in some border areas, particularly around the settlements of Khotyn and Yunakivka.” The situation is constantly changing along the contact line. The enemy is active in some places, while the others are a challenge to us.
  • As it moves slowly through eastern Ukraine, Russia’s defense ministry reported that its forces had taken control of three additional villages. Shevchenko Pershe and Hnativka, both located near the town of Pokrovsk, where the main point of Russia’s westward drive for months, were Stroivka in the northeast of Kharkiv.
  • None of the three villages that were under Russian rule were made public by Ukrainian military reports. According to the military, Russian forces carried out 53 attacks close to Pokrovsk in the last 24 hours.

Ceasefire

  • The Kremlin stated on Thursday that it was anticipating Kyiv’s response to its suggestion for new talks in Istanbul starting on Monday.
  • Ukraine demanded that Moscow provide a document outlining its conditions for peace during the conflict, adding that Kyiv had already submitted its vision for a peace settlement. However, it stated that it was ready to hold further discussions with Russia in Istanbul.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, claimed that Russia had engaged in “yet another deception” by failing to submit its proposed peace settlement before the next potential meeting. In his nightly video address, Zelenskyy stated that “even the so-called “memorandum” they promised and appear to have prepared for more than a week has not yet been seen by anyone.
  • Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, claimed Kyiv’s demand for the “memorandum” was “non-constructive.”
  • Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesman for the Ukrainian government, said Moscow’s inability to send the document “suggests that it is likely filled with unrealistic ultimatums.”
  • The new discussions will be led by Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan, who has warned Russia and Ukraine to “shut the door” of dialogue.
  • According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova, the Russian delegation to the second round of talks in Istanbul will be the same as it was for the first round.
  • Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs, reported to the Security Council that the “brutal surge in large-scale Russian attacks” against Ukraine has reduced the “cautious hope” she had a month ago for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
  • Khrystyna Hayovyshyn, the deputy Ukrainian ambassador to the UN, stated to the council that “Russia is not signaling any genuine intention to end its war” and that Moscow needed to be put under more political, economic, and military pressure.
  • Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian ambassador to the UN, refuted the accusations, accusing Kyiv of “prolonging the war” and remarking that Ukraine’s defeat was unavoidable. No new anti-Russian sanctions, weapons deliveries to Ukraine, or other hostile measures will stop the Zelenskyy regime from eventually being defeated militarily, according to Nebenzia.
  • Washington will consider “stepping back from our negotiations efforts to end this conflict,” according to John Kelley, the United States’ alternate representative at the UN meeting, adding that additional sanctions against Moscow were “still on the table”.

military assistance

Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed potential delivery of German Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine during his Berlin trip. The Ukrainian president told the German broadcaster RTL that the chancellor and I had a one-on-one meeting about the Taurus issue.

  • Russia claimed that Serbia’s long-standing Slavic Balkan ally sent arms to Ukraine as a result of this offense.
  • According to a statement from Russia’s foreign intelligence service, “Serbian defense enterprises, contrary to the “neutrality” declared by official Belgrade, continue to supply ammunition to Kyiv.”
  • According to the statement, Serbian arms exports to Ukraine are allegedly handled through NATO-intermediates, “mostly the Czech Republic, Poland, and Bulgaria.” According to the article, “Exotic options involving African states have recently been used for this purpose.”

Regional security

  • In advance of Poland’s presidential election, a Belarusian radio station allegedly used disinformation and propaganda to support a pro-Russian candidate on social media.
  • According to experts, a Polish-based radio station, which was established by Belarus, has been using pro-Russian stories on social media for almost two years despite EU sanctions, according to a report released by three think tanks. Poland will cast its ballot on Sunday in a fiercely contested presidential election between pro-EU and nationalist candidates.

Economy

  • The International Monetary Fund announced that a review of the loan program would help unlock approximately $500 million in funds to promote macroeconomic stability.

Hamas says US ceasefire proposal means ‘continuation of killing’ in Gaza

A Palestinian group official has stated that a ceasefire proposal with Israel that was put forth by the administration of US President Donald Trump is “still under discussion” by Hamas, but in its current form it will only lead to “the continuation of killing and famine” in Gaza.

Israel “signed off” on the ceasefire proposal, according to White House Press Secretary Karolin Leavitt on Thursday, according to Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s Middle East envoy, who had given it to Hamas for consideration.

Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas political bureau, claimed that the agreement “does not meet any of our people’s demands,” with the most pressing one being to end the war.

Naim continued, “The movement’s leadership is fully responsible for the response to the proposal.”

The new proposal’s specifics have not been made public, but senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters that crucially, it did not include commitments from Israel to end its occupation of Gaza, remove Israeli troops from the enclave, or allow aid to freely enter the war-torn territory.

The government of Israel has not yet confirmed in a statement that it approved the most recent proposal.

According to reports in Israeli media this week, Netanyahu reportedly told the families of Israeli prisoners still being held in Gaza that he is ready to proceed with Witkoff’s temporary ceasefire plan.

Netanyahu may be betting on the plan being rejected by Hamas so that he can paint them as the “bad guys” and keep the war, according to Akiva Eldar, an Israeli political analyst, who told Al Jazeera.

Eldar claimed that “it happened before, and Netanyahu blamed them”.

conflicting reports

Deep differences between the conditions for ending the conflict, including Israel’s demand that Hamas completely disarm and the Palestinian group’s demand that Israeli forces leave Gaza, have severely hindered efforts to restore a ceasefire there.

This most recent suggestion comes in response to conflicting reports from earlier this week, when Hamas claimed it had met Witkoff and had only waited for a “final response” after agreeing to a “general framework” for a ceasefire.

The group stated in a statement that “we have reached an agreement on a general framework with Witkoff that guarantees a permanent ceasefire, the complete withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, and the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid.”

According to the Hamas statement, the agreement also reportedly stated that “the establishment of a professional committee to manage Gaza’s affairs is declared.”

Trump would reportedly guarantee the establishment of a ceasefire in 60 days and allow the Israeli troops to leave Gaza as part of the deal.

However, Witkoff later claimed that these conditions were in line with any offer he made and that what he had seen was “completely unacceptable.”

Witkoff’s unidentified US official, who spoke to Al Jazeera, also refuted the claim, calling them “inaccurate” and “disappointing.” Another unnamed official in an interview with The Times of Israel called the claim “propaganda” and “psychological warfare” and called it “propaganda.”

After breaking a six-week temporary ceasefire, Israel resumed its occupation of Gaza on March 18 with Netanyahu announcing that fighting had re-entered with “full force.”

Nearly 4, 000 people have been killed since the Israeli military’s continued assault on Gaza in recent months, raising the death toll overall in the area to more than 54, 000, according to health officials in Gaza.

UN officials claim that the Palestinian population is on the verge of famine because Israel has also imposed a deadly, months-long blockade on humanitarian aid.

Israel partially lifted its blockade on May 19 that allowed aid to trickle in from Gaza, but Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the United States described it as merely a “teaspoon” of what is required.

The US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a new and contentious organization that promised to provide aid to the besieged enclave, distributed life-saving supplies to crowds of hungry Palestinians this week.

Overcoming struggles & Taylor’s advice – Humphries seals triple crown

Media PA

Luke Humphries’ smile was visible to the entire family.

The world number one was full of emotions less than two months after declaring he felt “emotionless” on the oche due to a stringent playing schedule that had made darts a “chore.”

In front of a packed O2 Arena with tears streaming in his eyes as he triumphantly defeated Luke Littler to win his first Premier League title, there was no shortage of joy, satisfaction, or relief on display.

The 30-year-old said, “It’s about when I had those struggles in March.”

When you accomplish things like this, it felt like you put in the effort and sacrificed yourself for it.

You work so hard, you stay away from home for a long time, and you get them awards. The world is meant by that.

“I do think I have that mental strength,” she said. As I previously stated, I know that if I win the title, it will be because of my mental fortitude and conviction. That is what I believe happened.

I had a 3-0 lead in the final and could have easily let that slip away, but I used mental fortitude to hold on to the lead.

Humphries, who had mental health issues and anxiety at times throughout his career, has previously reflected on how to become a world champion in 2024. After experiencing an anxiety attack on stage in 2018, he considered quitting the sport.

After his most recent victory, Humphries was already anticipating the future, having overcome those struggles to add yet another significant title to his total.

I’m only a few titles away from becoming the third-most successful darts player because I’m still relatively young in the game, he continued.

Humphries won the Premier League, becoming only the fourth player to win the tournament’s three championships, which also include the World Championship and the World Matchplay.

It “feels incredible.” Only four people have done it, which makes it “absolutely special,” he said.

He continued, “I’ve joined an elite club with Gary Anderson, Phil Taylor, and Michael van Gerwen,” in a statement to Sky Sports.

“I have to say a big “thank you” to Phil Taylor for supporting me for a long time. If you are watching, Phil, thank you because it really helped me.

He gave me a lot of advice and that extra boost.

Humphries insisted that the advice he received from the 16-time world champion would remain with them, but that he had also stated that it was only about himself and not any of his rivals.

He admitted to lying to me and not believing in me at all, according to Humphries.

Another Luke and Luke saga final is being presented.

As their rivalry grows, Humphries’ victory was also recompensed for his loss in the final of last year to Littler.

The pair have faced off again 22 times since their initial encounter in the 2024 World Championship final, with Littler winning 13 of those victories over Humphries’ 10th.

They are the world’s two top players, and it has proven to be absolutely clear over the past 18 months.

When they are in top form, it seems as though the other player is the only one who can live with them.

Add to that level by their consistency, and it’s no wonder the Littler-Humphries rivalry is being hailed as one that could dominate darts for years to come.

According to Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle, “These two could have sewn up.”

They will be the darting industry’s mainstay. For the better part of these two, players will have to play extremely well.

Someone will have to step up if they have that hunger for four, five, six, or even ten years.

Humphries was less convinced when asked if he and Littler would be engaged in a 10- or 15-year battle at the top.

The issue is that there is always a second person waiting for you, he said.

“In five years, there might be as many players as me and Luke in terms of a battle between us all.”

We’d love to compete in many finals over the next ten years, which we probably will, but there will likely be many other names involved with us.

Humphries and Littler have, however, decided to stay away from the chasing pack for the time being.

There is still no sign of familiarity breeding contempt even after 23 matches against each other in such a short amount of time.

I cherish him,” Humphries compared his teenage rival to the fact that “I think he’s a good kid.”

He’s one of my close darts friends. Because he is young and has a great talent, he will probably win much more than I will ever win in my career.

“I’m just happy when I pick up a few here and there,” I thought. I told him on the stage that I was extremely happy to win, but I’m confident that he would get me back in the future.

The Luke and Luke saga’s final is “just another final.”

The rivals will team up as team-mates for England at the World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt in June when they compete against one another in the following stages of the saga.

I’m in a rush, Littler told Sky Sports. He won it last year, so I’m hoping he can win.

It’s only a matter of time before they will square off again in a major tournament against each other in what should be a formidable duo.

X Factor band formed by Simon Cowell ‘to reunite but without one member’

Seven years after Fifth Harmony took a break, there is rumor that a group that Simon Cowell and the likes of Cowell from the X Factor USA are reunited.

There is speculation that a group put together on the X Factor are planning to reunite with all but one of its original members. They are said to have “big plans” for next year, which marks a significant anniversary in the band’s history.

Fifth Harmony was formed on the X Factor USA in 2012 after Ally Brooke, now 31, Camila Cabello, now 28, Dinah Jane, now 27, Lauren Jauregui, now 28, and Normani, now 28, auditioned as solo artists. The group went on to have success, with them releasing songs like Work From Home.

Camila, however, left Fifth Harmony in 2016. After her departure, her bandmates continued to play together before announcing two years later that they would be taking an indefinite break to focus on solo projects.

It’s now been reported that Ally, Dinah, Lauren and Normani are in talks to reunite. The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the reunion won’t include Camila, who has topped the charts with tracks like Havana since leaving the group.

She and the group had just released two albums, including Reflection, which was their first album, and 7/27 the year afterward. However, Camila had already left by the time Fifth Harmony, the group’s third album, was released.

The reportedly ambitious Fifth Harmony’s plans for the upcoming year, which will mark Camila’s tenth birthday, are reported to be significant. Ten years will have passed since 7/27, when one of their biggest hits, Work from Home, was released.

Sources have said the group is developing a documentary about their return to the stage, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The potential project would “capture footage on a yet-to-be-announced tour,” according to the outlet.

Ally, Dinah, Lauren, and Normani announced in March 2018 that they would leave Fifth Harmony in a press release that came more than seven years later. All four of them have since released solo music, much like their former bandmate Camila.

The four members at the time said to fans, “We’ve realized how far we’ve come and how much we appreciate everything, more than ever,” in response. We’ve really had a wonderful time together, and we can’t begin to express our gratitude to you for supporting us on this extraordinary journey.

“We also realized that in order to stay true to ourselves and to you, we do need to take a break from Fifth Harmony in order to pursue solo endeavors after going hard, nonstop for six years.”

We are all very excited and appreciative to be able to use this time to learn, develop, and ultimately find our feet as individuals, according to the statement. We are allowing ourselves to gain new knowledge, skills, and perspectives to return to our Fifth Harmony family through this.

Thank you for everything we’ve been able to create as Fifth Harmony, Fifth Harmony said at the time. We will continue to grow on ourselves, continue to support one another in everything we do, and continue to make you, each other, and ourselves proud. We are eagerly awaiting the conclusion of the year’s run, which will still take place as planned.

Fifth Harmony’s representatives have been contacted by The Mirror for comment.
