Rangers approach Davide Ancelotti & Ferguson expects clarity ‘in days’

Getty Images

Davide Ancelotti has been approached about becoming Rangers manager but the Scottish Premiership club have not yet established a leading candidate for the job.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Monday that the 35-year-old Real Madrid assistant, who is the son of outgoing Bernabeu head coach Carlo Ancelotti, has been identified by 49ers Enterprises, who are in talks to take over the Ibrox club.

However, Rangers are one of several options for Ancelotti, along with Italian club Como. In the meantime, he will start work under his father with the Brazilian national team.

The Ibrox club have neither confirmed nor denied an interest in Ancelotti but are continuing discussions with potential managers.

Sources have indicated they are still in the early stages of the process and that suggestions of a leading candidate are inaccurate.

Five-time Champions League-winning manager Carlo Ancelotti, 65, will depart Real at the end of the month to take on the Brazil head coach job.

Italian Davide Ancelotti previously assisted his father at Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton and was on the books of AC Milan and Borgomanero as a player.

‘If somebody else gets the job, I’ll support them’

Barry Ferguson has overseen Rangers’ past 13 games as interim head coach following Philippe Clement’s sacking in February.

The 45-year-old will take charge of Rangers’ final home game of the season against Dundee United on Wednesday, before they end their campaign at Hibernian on Saturday.

He expects his and Rangers’ future to become clearer over the next few days and insists he would bring success to the club if given the job on a permanent basis.

“In terms of the update on myself, that’s going to remain private, but I’m sure you’ll see over the next few days, hopefully there’s going to be movement,” he said.

“I’ve mentioned a number of times, it has to get moving in terms of who’s going to be the manager because you’ve got pre-season coming up, there’s players out of contract, players back on loan etc.”

Ferguson says he backs himself over any of the candidates linked with the job.

And he admits he would be disappointed if he did not get the chance to prove himself over a longer spell.

“I knew when I took the job that I could make a difference,” he added, having overseen five wins and four draws from the past 13 matches.

“Has it been the way that I’ve wanted it to go? It’s not been perfect, I get that, but I think I’ve done okay.

“I can do better, but if you give me the tools to go and do that, I know I’d be a success. I know I can do the job, but if somebody else gets it, I’ll still get behind them from a distance.

“Will it hurt me? No, I’ll be disappointed. I’d be lying if I was sitting here saying otherwise, but I’m a big boy, I’ll get on with it and I’ll move on.

Pop star Tom Grennan goes undercover at supermarket in his hometown

Customers at the store in Bedford were invited to sample different flavours of popchips while blindfolded – but little did they know Tom Grennan was waiting to greet them

Singer Tom Grennan left fans speechless when he made a surprise appearance at a blind taste test event in his hometown of Bedford. The event, held at the local Tesco store, invited customers to sample various flavours of popchips while blindfolded. But when they removed their blindfolds, they were shocked to find themselves face-to-face with the 29-year-old pop star.

Grennan, a Brit Awards nominee, had secretly swapped places with a staff member while the shoppers were sampling the “better-for-you” snack. As a special treat, Grennan presented the lucky shoppers with VIP tickets to an exclusive gig scheduled for later this month.

One fan, Liz Sullivan, 46, from Bedford, was overjoyed when she recognised Grennan’s voice, exclaiming: “OMG, I know whose voice that is – this is the most ridiculous day.”

Another fan, Lucas Johnston, 18, from Oxfordshire, instantly recognised his idol and greeted him with a warm, “How are you, boss?”

The star, who now resides in London, reflected on his return to his hometown, saying: “Coming back to my hometown, where it all started for me, and pulling off this surprise for my fans was so special. I’ve got so many fond memories here.”

Alleged Bribery: Kano Court Rejects Ganduje’s Bid To Stop Trial

A Kano State High Court on Tuesday dismissed a motion filed by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, challenging the court’s jurisdiction to hear an 11-count corruption charge brought against him and seven others.

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, who presided over the matter, ruled that the preliminary objections raised by Ganduje, who is a former governor of Kano, and his co-defendants were “incompetent” and lacked merit.

She affirmed the court’s jurisdiction to hear the charges, which include allegations of bribery, conspiracy, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds amounting to billions of naira.

“The charges before this court are competent. The power to investigate criminal matters does not reside solely with the police. The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission is equally empowered under the law,” Justice Aliyu stated.

The judge emphasised that the trial would proceed even in the absence of Ganduje and the six other defendants.

She also summoned the sixth defendant, Lamash Properties Limited, and adjourned the case to July 30 and 31 for hearing.

The defendants include Ganduje’s wife, Prof. Hafsat Umar, and other individuals and companies: Abubakar Bawuro, Umar Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Safari Textiles Limited, Lasage General Enterprises Limited, and Lamash Properties Limited.

Counsel for the state, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, in response to the preliminary objections, had urged the court to dismiss all applications, describing them as “deliberate attempts to frustrate the trial”.

“We submitted that the objections lack legal foundation and urged the court to allow justice to take its full course,” Adedipe said.

Ganduje’s legal team, led by Lydia Oluwakemi Oyewo, had filed a preliminary objection dated November 18, 2024, seeking to quash the charges and halt the trial on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction.

In similar motions, counsels for the third, fifth, sixth, and eigth defendants—Chief M. N. Duru, SAN, Mr. Muhammad Shehu, Mr. Abubakar Ahmad, and Mr. Faruk Asekome respectively—each filed preliminary objections between September and October 2024, all challenging the legitimacy of the charges and the competence of the court.

Dottin to miss West Indies tour of England

West Indies have left out all-rounder Deandra Dottin from their squad that will tour England in May and June.

The 33-year-old sustained an injury playing at the Women’s Premier League in March, and did not feature as the West Indies failed to reach the upcoming World Cup at last month’s qualifying tournament.

Hayley Matthews will lead a 15-strong touring party for three T20s and three one-day internationals, starting on 21 May at Canterbury.

The uncapped duo of all-rounder Realeanna Grimmond, 20, and seamer Jahzara Claxton, 19, are the new additions to the squad that finished third at the World Cup qualifiers in Pakistan.

“This upcoming tour of England offers our women an important opportunity to reassert themselves on the international stage,” said Cricket West Indies director of cricket Miles Bascombe.

“It’s a chance to demonstrate the talent, grit, and character that are synonymous with West Indies cricket.”

The tourists will face an England team playing for the first time under their new leadership team of head coach Charlotte Edwards and captain Natalie Sciver-Brunt.

‘I’m at Cannes Film Festival and this is best place to spot celebs – but it’s not cheap’

With the best in the business descending on Cannes Film Festival this week, here’s how and where to find all of your favourite famous faces – but be warned, celeb-spotting isn’t cheap

Cannes Film Festival kicks off today with a star-studded opening ceremony on the Côte d’Azur, and with celebrities like Robert De Niro and Bella Hadid in attendance, there’s plenty of star spotting to be done.

I’m here at the film festival and have already paid a visit to some of the locations the A-list are residing in, with Julia Garner, Naomie Harris and Bella Hadid all just touching distance away.

The Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, is where you’re likely to find Julia Garner, Naomie Harris and Mobland star Ansel Boone. These celebs are staying in the beachfront haven and are amongst those attending Tuesday’s invite-only Vanity Fair lunch at the hotel’s beach club.

Perfect for people watching, I spotted Julia grabbing a drink in the lobby while Ansel laughed along with pals by the door, so very casual.

However, paying a visit to this hotel won’t be cheap, with a diet coke from the lobby bar coming in at €14, while the cheapest drink on the menu is an espresso coffee at €9. They will bring you some nuts and olives though, if that helps the blow…

Across the beach is the coveted Hôtel Martinez, which this year is housing the likes of Bella Hadid and Heidi Klum. If you’re looking to catch some nonchalant A-list action, this is the place to hang around.

Heidi and her husband Tom Kaulitz arrived to the five-star hotel yesterday, joining Andie MacDowell and supermodel Irina Shayk.

With Chopard taking over it’s rooftop bar for their star-studded line-up of exclusive events, this hotel is a hub for the A-list. You’ll have to be smart about your celeb hunting though, as the Martinez bar is closed for bookings and up to the security guards whether you’ll be let in.

Slightly further out is the Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc, which has previously welcomed Tom Hanks, Leonardo Di Caprio and the Kardashians. It is also the home of the annual amfAR Gala, which will return for another year next week.

If the celeb hotel haunts aren’t your speed, there is also the film festival itself. With the opening ceremony kicking things off tonight and Tom Cruise heading to the Mission Impossible premiere tomorrow evening, it wouldn’t go a miss sticking around the Palais – where the premieres take place.

And if the stars aren’t in their hotels or at the screenings, they are likely at an invite-only party. Luckily, we’ve got access to many of these too.

Head to hotspots such as the Carlton Cannes beach, Lucia Cannes and Copal Beach to try your luck at some parties across the week. While you may not make it inside, those A-Listers have to stumble out at some point…

Love Island winners split just weeks after going official

Love Island winners, Gabby Allen and Casey O’Gorman, have split up, according to reports. The perky pair only became boyfriend and girlfriend last month, but have now decided to call it quits. They have reportedly ended things on good terms, with a source saying they just realised it “wasn’t going to work anymore”.

They said: “Casey and Gabby have both decided to part ways. They had a really good relationship and enjoyed each others time but the reality is that they are focusing on different things and they both have realised that. Neither of them have parted ways badly but they just knew it wasn’t going to work anymore.

“Both have confided in quite a few friends about this and so it’s not really a secret in their circles, but they’ve made the decision to part ways this week,” reports The Sun.

Gabby, 33, and Casey, 28, only became official in April when Gabby shared a clip of the couple on Instagram with the caption: “Boyfriend does my voiceover. Getting red carpet ready with @maybelline.”

However, Casey kept coy about the couple’s status, telling Today.com: “Like,I will ask Gabby to be my girlfriend at some point.

“But do you know what it is? It’s all this like noise of, ‘When are you going to ask? When are you going to ask?’ I feel like I don’t want to now just ask it because people are saying it. I want to just do it.”

Gabby added: “We don’t feel pressure from boyfriend and girlfriend to where we are now. I think it will happen just naturally.”

Fans thought the writing may be on the wall for the couple when Casey jokingly mocked pal Ronnie Vint for making things official with fellow Love Islander, Harriett Blackmore.

In February, Gabby and Casey shared snaps of their double date with previous Love Island All-Stars winners Molly Smith and Tom Clare.

In a video clip posted on his Instagram Stories, Casey addresses their fans as he has his arm around Gabby while travelling to their date in a taxi. He initially spread panic among fans of the couple, who were already worried they’d split up, by saying: “Hello, we are back together.” Casey immediately allayed fears by quickly adding: “We hadn’t split up.” Gabby added jokingly: “Don’t panic, don’t panic.”

The couple were crowned the winners of ITV Love Island All Stars, receiving a staggering £50,000 cash prize to split between them.

However, it looks like the prize money is the only thing they’re leaving the show with as they return to their single status.

The Mirror has contacted Gabby and Casey’s reps for comment.
