Police Arrest Female Arms Runner With 481 Rounds Of Ammunition In Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command says its operatives have arrested a 21-year-old suspected female arms runner who was en route to supply ammunition to terrorists in local government areas known for terror activities.

The Command’s spokesman, Ramhan Nansel, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Lafia, the state capital.

He said the arrest followed credible intelligence indicating that Fatima Salisu, a native of Funtua in Katsina State, was intercepted in the Azuba area of Lafia.

She was allegedly transporting a large cache of ammunition through Keana and Doma LGAs, en route to deliver the consignment to criminal elements in Katsina.

“Acting swiftly on the intelligence tip-off, Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima J. Mohammed, ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit,” Nansel said.

The operation led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of 400 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition and 81 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigators work to dismantle the arms trafficking network and trace its connections to armed banditry and terrorism.

While describing the arrest as a significant step in the ongoing fight against illegal arms proliferation and crime in the region, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to ridding the state of crime.

Report Tenancy Agreement Fees Higher Than 10 Percent, Lagos Govt Tells Residents

The Lagos State Government has once more cautioned against the collection of tenancy agreement fees beyond the stipulated 10 per cent and has asked residents to report such abnormality to the authorities.

At the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, warned against violation of the state’s tenancy law, which caps tenancy agreement fees at 10 per cent.

“We have been overwhelmed by reports of the activities of these unscrupulous elements making life hard for Lagosians with agreements and commissions that are like asking for an arm and a leg,” Odunuga-Bakare said in a statement issued by the Lagos State Government.

“We are calling on members of the public not to keep silent but to report such agents and landlords to us, for the government cannot be everywhere, every time.”

She reiterated the restated the Lagos State Government’s stance against the imposition of excessive tenancy agreement fees, reminding all stakeholders within the state that the stipulated maximum remains 10% of the annual rent.

While the growing population in Lagos is a factor in the housing challenge, the special adviser said stakeholders and the government have met to address the situation.

“We have met with associations of real estate agents, and they have assured us that the people who are engaging in such practices are not registered agents that identify with their associations,” Odunuga-Bakare said, suggesting that these illegal activities are often perpetrated by unregistered individuals operating outside the purview of established professional bodies.”

Earlier, the Lagos Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the state is mulling monthly and quarterly rent options for residents of the state.

‘One long Nakba’: Palestinians mark 77 years since mass expulsion by Israel

Palestinians held marches in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah to commemorate the Nakba, or “catastrophe”, of their mass dispossession during the creation of Israel in 1948.

More than 50,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 and an aid blockade threatens famine, while Israeli leaders continue to express a desire to empty the territory of Palestinians.

In the West Bank, too, occupied since 1967, Israeli forces have displaced tens of thousands from refugee camps as part of a major military operation.

This year marks the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, during which an estimated 750,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their lands after Israel declared itself an independent state in the territory.

In Ramallah city, Palestinian flags and black ones branded “return” flew at road intersections on Wednesday, while schoolchildren were bussed into the city centre to take part in the weeklong commemoration.

At one event, young boys wearing Palestinian kuffiyeh scarves waved flags and carried a giant replica key, a symbol of the lost homes in what is now Israel that families hope to return to.

No events were planned in Gaza, where more than 19 months of war and Israeli bombardment have left residents destitute and displaced.

Moamen al-Sherbini, a resident of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, told the AFP news agency that he felt history was repeating itself.

“Our lives here in Gaza have become one long Nakba, losing loved ones, our homes destroyed, our livelihoods gone.”

Nearly all of Gaza’s 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once during Israel’s war.

In early May, Israel’s security cabinet approved plans for an expanded military offensive in Gaza, aimed at the “conquest” of the territory while displacing its people en masse, drawing international condemnation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his government is working to find third countries to take in Gaza’s population, months after United States President Donald Trump suggested they be expelled and the territory redeveloped as a holiday destination.

“Nakba Day is no longer just a memory – it’s a daily reality we live in Gaza,” said 36-year-old Malak Radwan, speaking from Nuseirat in the centre of the enclave.

“This is a miserable day in the lives of Palestinian refugees,” said 52-year-old Nael Nakhleh in Ramallah, whose family comes from the village of al-Majdal near Jaffa in what is now Israel.

Palestinian refugees maintain their demand to return to the villages and cities in current-day Israel that they or their relatives were forced to leave in 1948. The “right of return” remains a core issue in the long-stalled negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

Buttler to skip IPL play-offs for England ODIs

Jos Buttler will skip the Indian Premier League play-offs if Gujarat Titans qualify so he can play a full part in England’s one-day and T20 series against West Indies.

The former captain is one of five players named in the England one-day squad who are in the IPL.

The rescheduling of the IPL amid political tension between India and Pakistan means the latter stages clash with England’s series.

The IPL resumes on Saturday. The play-offs begin on 29 May and the final is on 3 June.

All-rounders Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, who play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians respectively, are expected to do the same.

Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton, the two other IPL players in England’s ODI squad, are not expected to return to India as their franchises cannot qualify for the play-offs.

England play West Indies in three ODIs before a three-match T20 series starts on 6 June.

The Titans, who are top of the IPL with three matches left, need only one win to guarantee a play-off spot.

Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis appears set be signed by the Titans as Buttler’s replacement. Their final group match is on 25 May.

Second-placed Royal Challengers also need to win one of their three remaining matches to qualify.

England all-rounder Liam Livingstone and wicketkeeper Phil Salt have also returned to RCB for the IPL’s restart.

Livingstone has been dropped by England and Salt features only in the T20 squad.

There is no way Paul can beat my son – Chavez Sr

Getty Images

All-time boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr believes there is “no way” Jake Paul can beat his son when the pair meet in California on 28 June.

American Paul, 28, is a divisive figure in the sport who beat a 58-year-old Mike Tyson in a much-hyped contest in November.

Chavez Jr, 39, is a former world champion but has competed just once since 2021.

“Jake Paul is young and strong, but he’s never faced a fighter like my son,” 62-year-old Chavez Sr said at Wednesday’s news conference.

Paul, who found fame by posting prank videos on YouTube and as a child actor on the Disney Channel, has amassed a record of 11 wins, mostly against ex-UFC fighters. His only loss is to Briton Tommy Fury in 2023.

“Put both the Chavezs in there, I’ll whoop Sr and Jr in the same night,” he said.

He feels a win over Chavez Jr at the Honda Center in Anaheim would take him a step closer to an unlikely shot at a cruiserweight world title.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Paul is missing many steps in boxing – Chavez Jr

Mexican Chavez Jr has won 53 of his 61 fights and held the WBC middleweight title between 2011 and 2012.

In 2017, he went the distance with pound-for-pound star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez but he lost a boxing bout to former UFC champion Anderson Silva in 2021.

“[Paul] has never fought anybody like me. Mike Tyson wasn’t even a fighter,” Chavez Jr said.

“He doesn’t know what he’s going to see or what to expect because he’s never seen it before. In boxing, you learn step by step, and he’s missing many.”

Chavez Jr has been accused of lacking dedication in the past. In July, he was booed by fans after he called out Paul following a laboured points win over ex-MMA fighter Uriah Hall.

But his father is drawing confidence from what he has seen in his son’s camp so far.

Real agree to pay Huijsen’s £50m release clause

Real Madrid are set to sign Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen after agreeing to pay the defender’s £50m release clause.

The Spain international, 20, is close to agreeing personal terms with the La Liga club, turning down a number of offers to remain in England.

Madrid will activate the release clause in Huijsen’s Bournemouth contract, which he signed less than 12 months ago.

The fee will be paid in three instalments, with Huijsen’s two former clubs set to receive a slice of the fee – Juventus are due 10% and Malaga 5%.

BBC Sport has been told by multiple sources the deal is progressing with a full agreement expected soon.

Real wanted to complete the signing before next month’s inaugural Club World Cup in the US.

Huijsen has chosen Real and will return to Spain where he grew up, playing for Costa Unida CF academy in Marbella and Malaga’s youth team.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who is set to replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real manager, has been instrumental in the decision to sign the defender and prioritised signing a young centre-back.

Huijsen joined Bournemouth from Juventus last summer for a fee of £12.6m.

The Netherlands-born defender has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Cherries this season, scoring three times.
