Brooklyn Beckham given sweet backing by important family member amid ‘feud’

Brooklyn Beckham is said to have had a falling out with parents, David and Victoria Beckham, which caused him to miss his dad’s 50th birthday celebrations earlier in the month

Brooklyn and Nicola missed David’s 50th celebrations

Brooklyn Beckham has received online support from a family member after an apparent feud saw him miss his dad’s birthday celebrations. Brooklyn, 26, and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, failed to turn up to any of former footballer David Beckham’s 50th birthday celebrations earlier in the month, leading to intense speculation their was a family divide.

While David and Victoria have continued to stay silent on the allegations, it appears his nan Sandra is supporting her grandson.

Brooklyn previously took to Instagram to share a sweet snap of his nan hugging into him. Sandra is seen patting Brooklyn’s belly as his wife flanks him on his other side. Nicola was wearing a lemon low-cut dress for the occasion as they all smiled at the camera.

But it’s his latest post following his link-up with Air Bnb that had Sandra sharing support. Brooklyn took to his platform and wrote: “Big thanks to @airbnb for having me at their Summer Release. They’re rolling out some amazing new experiences and you can book mine on May 15th!

“We’ll be mixing cocktails, plating perfection, and experiencing the heat of my @cloud23 hot sauce.”

Brooklyn’s paternal grandmother Sandra shared a comment on the post of an emoji showing two raised hands emojis. There was also a heart emoji.

Picking up on the comment, another follower wrote: “I love that Brooklyn’s grandma always supports him. Everyone needs a grandma like Sandra.”

However, others pleaded with Brooklyn to end any family feud he may have with his parents. “Go and speak to your family!!!” one user penned. “Your Mum and Dad will always be there for you xxx.”

Another added: “You guys are cute, but more so next to David… it’s very sad.”

While they seems to be a rift between Brooklyn and his parents, reports suggest he sees his wife’s family as his sanctuary “where he can hide away”. Since reports of their rift, Brooklyn has reportedly found a “second mum” in the Peltz clan.

It’s said he feels he can “hide away” with “less pressure”. Sources have claimed Nicola’s mother Claudia, 70, and billionaire father Nelson, 82, have become a “sanctuary” to Brooklyn.

One insider told The Sun: “Claudia is like a second mother to him and, although they are billionaires, Nicola and her brothers had more of a ‘normal’ upbringing because they didn’t have the media intrusion, which Brooklyn has always found so hard.

“He sees them as a kind of sanctuary where he can hide away if he wants to, but that is almost impossible in the Beckham family, they always seem to be on show. There is less pressure on him in a way.”

Largest US retailer Walmart warns of price hikes because of tariffs

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, will have to start raising prices later this month due to the high cost of tariffs, executives have warned in a clear signal that United States President Donald Trump’s trade war is filtering through to the US economy.

As a bellwether of US consumer health, Walmart’s explicit statement on Thursday is also a signpost for how the trade war is affecting companies as Walmart is noted for its ability to manage costs more aggressively than other companies to keep prices low.

Walmart’s shares fell 2.3 percent in morning trading after it also declined to provide a profit forecast for the second quarter, even as the company’s US comparable sales surpassed expectations in the first quarter.

Net sales rose 2.5 percent to $165.6bn, a hair shy of estimates, while same-store sales were up 4.5 percent. Walmart’s quarterly adjusted profit was 61 cents per share, ahead of the analyst consensus for 58 cents per share.

Many US companies have either slashed or pulled their full-year expectations in the wake of the trade war, as consumers stretch their budgets to buy everything from groceries to essentials at cheaper prices. But Walmart’s statement will resonate nationwide, as roughly 255 million people shop in its stores and online weekly around the world, and 90 percent of the US population lives within 10 miles of a Walmart.

US shoppers will start to see prices rise at the end of May and certainly in June, Walmart’s Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said in a CNBC interview. On a post-earnings call with analysts, he said the retailer would also have to cut back on orders as it considers price elasticity.

As the largest importer of container goods in the US, Walmart is heavily exposed to tariffs, and even though the US and China reached a truce that lowered levies for imports on Chinese goods to 30 percent, that’s still a high cost to bear, executives said.

“We’re very pleased and appreciative of the progress that has been made by the administration to bring tariffs down … but let me emphasise we still think that’s too high,” Rainey said on the call, referring to the tariff cuts negotiated over the weekend.

“There are certain items, certain categories of merchandise that we’re dependent upon to import from other countries and the prices of those things are likely going to go up, and that’s not good for consumers,” he added.

Other retailers also said they would be boosting prices. German sandal maker Birkenstock on Thursday said it plans to raise prices globally to fully offset the impact of the US tariff of 10 percent on European Union-made goods.

US consumer sentiment ebbed for a fourth straight month in April, signaling watchful purchasing, while the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted for the first time in three years during the first quarter, fanning worries of a recession.

Narrow margins

Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon said the retailer would not be able to absorb all the tariffs’ costs because of narrow retail margins, but was committed to ensuring that tariff-related costs on general merchandise – which primarily come from China – do not drive food prices higher.

To mitigate the impact, Walmart is working with suppliers to substitute tariff-affected components, such as replacing aluminium with fibreglass, which is not subject to tariffs.

Despite these efforts, McMillon noted that adjusting costs is more challenging in cases where Walmart imports food items like bananas, avocados, coffee, and roses from countries such as Costa Rica, Peru, and Colombia.

Analysts said Walmart was better positioned than rivals, as its scale enables it to lean on its suppliers and squeeze out efficiencies to shield customers from tariffs, but only so much.

“There will likely be some demand destruction from tariffs; a complete wreck is unlikely,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

UK’s Starmer seeking third countries to set up asylum seeker ‘return hubs’

The United Kingdom is talking to third countries about setting up “return hubs” to host asylum seekers refused the right to stay in the country as part of a renewed crackdown on immigration, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

The UK leader is under increasing pressure to cut the number of migrants arriving on UK shores amid the rising popularity of the far-right Reform UK Party.

He said on Thursday that he was talking to “a number of countries” about hosting the “return hubs”, which would receive failed asylum seekers who have exhausted all avenues of appeal for processing prior to deportation.

Speaking during a visit to Albania, Starmer did not specify which countries he was speaking to about the scheme, which has drawn comparisons with a plan developed by the previous Conservative government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, which Starmer had dismissed as a gimmick and scrapped immediately after entering office in July.

The subject was apparently not on the agenda for Starmer’s meetings in Tirana, with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama specifying in a joint news conference that a similar returns model, which his country had agreed to with Italy last year, was a “one off” that “takes its time to be tested”.

That scheme, which could see Italian-run facilities in Albania holding up to 36,000 asylum seekers annually while their applications are fast-tracked, is currently bogged down in the courts.

Starmer admitted that establishing the facilities would not be a “silver bullet” for halting the perilous crossings of the English Channel in small boats, which have seen 12,000 people arriving so far this year, putting 2025 on course to potentially see a record high number of arrivals.

However, combined with other measures to tackle smuggling gangs, he said the plan would “allow us to bear down on this vile trade”.

Starmer claimed his new Labour government had been left a “mess” by the previous Conservative leadership, which he said had failed to process asylum claims.

The prime minister’s official spokesperson said, “This will basically apply to people who have exhausted all legal routes to remain in the UK but are attempting to stall, using various tactics – whether it’s losing their paperwork or using other tactics to frustrate their removal.”

Singer Chris Brown was reportedly arrested at a hotel in Manchester over an alleged bottle attack from 2023.

The singer is said to have been arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning regarding the incident at a London nightclub. The arrest happened at just after 2am at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester.

It’s said Brown was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw at trendy Tape nightclub in Mayfair, Central London, in February 2023. The alleged arrest came a day after Brown had flown into the UK.

It’s said the arrest took place after it was discovered the star was in the country. Met detectives are said to have travelled to Manchester where they arrested him.

While police forces didn’t name Brown, they issued a statement on the arrest. Greater Manchester Police issued a statement on the Lowry Hotel arrest, saying: “This morning (Thursday 15 May) we arrested a 36-year-old man at a hotel in Manchester on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on behalf of the Metropolitan Police.”

A Met spokesman also said: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody where he remains.

“The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.’’

Mr Diaw claims Brown attacked him unprovoked while the star and his entourage were at a Dirty Martini club night held at the trendy Tape nightclub. He alleged the singer hit him over the head with a bottle and then punched and kicked him as he lay on the floor.

At the time following the alleged incident, Mr Diaw said: “He hit me over the head two or three times. My knee collapsed as well.”

Mr Diaw was taken to hospital and needed crutches to walk following his discharge. The alleged attack occurred while songwriter Brown was on a worldwide tour and playing in the UK.

Diaw launched a civil claim against Brown for $16 million (£12 million) in damages for injuries and losses suffered as a result of the alleged attack.

Brown was set to release another 10 British performance dates next month, but the tour could now be thrown into jeopardy due to the police investigation.

He previously announced his Breezy Bowl XX Tour to celebrate his 20 year career. During the tour, Brown was set to play gigs at the Co-Op Live stadium in Manchester. He was then expected to perform again at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff before a potential huge show at Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium in London. Gigs in Birmingham, Glasgow and Dublin were set to follow.

Flying Eagles Fall To South Africa In U-20 AFCON Semis

South Africa edged Flying Eagles of Nigeria 1-0 in a tense semi-final clash at the Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday to book a place in the final of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

A well-taken header by Tylon Smith in the 66th minute proved decisive in a fiercely contested match between two of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.

The result also ends Nigeria’s hopes of winning a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title.

The Flying Eagles were dominant for large spells in the second half, but were made to rue missed opportunities, particularly in the final moments when South African goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe produced a string of saves to deny Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma.

The match began cautiously, with both sides probing without creating clear-cut chances.

Nigeria’s Tahir Maigana and South Africa’s Kutlwano Letlhaku both had early efforts saved in a first half that ended goalless despite Nigeria’s superior attacking numbers.

The breakthrough came just after the hour mark. Neo Rapoo whipped in a corner from the right, and Smith rose highest to power home a header into the centre of the goal — his first of the tournament and arguably the most important yet for the Amajita.

Nigeria responded with urgency, making double substitutions in the 65th minute to inject pace and fresh energy into the attack.

Rickson Mendos and Bidemi Amole nearly made instant impacts, with both going close in a series of intense late assaults on the South African goal.

Ayuma had two excellent chances to level, including a diving header that was brilliantly saved by Lowe.

But South Africa’s resolute defending and composed midfield play saw them through, stretching their unbeaten run at the Suez Canal Stadium to four games.

The win sees South Africa reach their second U-20 AFCON final, their first since 1997 when they finished as runners-up.
