Claudia Sheinbaum denounces proposed US remittance tax as ‘unacceptable’

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has denounced a provision in a tax bill being considered in the United States Congress that would impose duties on remittances — a term used to describe the money people send abroad for non-commercial reasons, often as gifts to family and loved ones.

On Thursday, during her morning news conference, Sheinbaum addressed the tax bill directly, calling the remittances proposal “a measure that is unacceptable”.

“It would result in double taxation, since Mexicans living in the United States already pay taxes,” she said.

She added that her government was reaching out to other countries with large immigrant populations to voice concern about the US proposition.

“This will not just affect Mexico,” she said. “It will also affect many other countries and many other Latin American countries.”

According to World Bank data from 2024, India is the top recipient of international remittances, with $129bn coming from abroad, followed by Mexico with more than $68bn.

In Mexico, in particular, experts estimate that remittances make up close to 4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

But a far-reaching tax bill championed by US President Donald Trump includes language that would impose a 5-percent excise tax on remittances sent specifically by non-citizens, including visa holders and permanent residents.

That bill would affect nearly 40 million people living in the country. US citizens, however, would be exempt from the remittance tax.

Trump has led a campaign to discourage immigration to the US and promote “mass deportation” during his second term in office, as part of his “America First” agenda.

Proponents of that platform say taxing remittances would serve as clear deterrence to immigrants who come to the US looking for better economic opportunities for themselves and any loved ones they hope to support back home.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, an anti-immigration think tank, told The Associated Press news agency that he believes barriers to remittances can help curb undocumented immigration to the US.

“One of the main reasons people come here is to work and send money home,” Krikorian said. “If that’s much more difficult to do, it becomes less appealing to come here.”

Under the bill being weighed in the House of Representatives, the 5-percent tax would be paid by the sender and collected by “remittance transfer providers”, who would then send that money to the US Treasury.

But President Sheinbaum and other leaders have called on Republicans in Congress to reconsider that provision, given the unintended consequences it could create. Sheinbaum even suggested that the tax could be seen as unconstitutional in the US.

“This is an injustice, apart from being unconstitutional,” she said on Thursday. “But in addition, it is the tax on those who have the least. They should charge taxes to those at the top, not those at the bottom.”

Critics of the measure point out that remittances can help stabilise impoverished areas abroad, thereby limiting the likelihood of undocumented migration from those areas.

Additional barriers to sending remittances could create economic setbacks for those communities, not to mention make the process more difficult for US citizens who are exempted from the proposed tax.

Still, even if the tax bill is defeated or the provision on remittances removed, the Trump administration has signalled it plans to move forward with other measures designed to discourage migrants from sending funds abroad.

On April 25, Trump posted on his media platform, Truth Social, a list of “weekly policy achievements”.

Cannes Bars Actor Accused Of Rape In New #MeToo Policy

The Cannes film festival barred an actor in a prominent French film from the red carpet on Thursday because of sexual assault allegations, unveiling a new policy under pressure from lawmakers and activists.

Theo Navarro-Mussy plays a police officer in a supporting role in the film “Dossier 137” by Dominik Moll, which premiered on Thursday in the festival’s main competition.

According to French magazine Telerama, which broke the news, three former partners accused the actor of rapes in 2018, 2019, and 2020 but the case was dropped last month for lack of evidence.

The three plaintiffs, all actors themselves, told Telerama they planned to appeal and file a civil lawsuit.

Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux confirmed to Telerama that Navarro-Mussy had been excluded from the world’s premier film festival because an appeal was underway.

“The judicial process is still ongoing,” Fremaux was quoted as saying in remarks confirmed to AFP by a spokesperson.

The treatment of Navarro-Mussy, if it becomes the basis of a consistent policy, would imply that any actor or director under active investigation for sexual assault would be excluded.

It would align Cannes with the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscars, which announced in January 2023 that nominees convicted of or under investigation for sexual assault would be barred.

Navarro-Mussy, 34, who had a breakthrough role in the French medical TV drama “Hippocrate”, denies the allegations but he told Telerama he understood the decision by festival organisers.

He did not join his co-stars including renowned French actor Lea Drucker on Thursday as they made their way up the red carpet to the premiere.

Inquiry

Elsewhere on Thursday, a vice president of one of the parallel film sections at Cannes was suspended after being publicly denounced for sexual violence during an event.

The executive from the ACID Cannes section has been suspended pending an investigation, the organisation said.

In the past, Fremaux has sought to avoid taking a clear stance on the numerous sexual assault cases that have dogged figures in the film industry, particularly since the #MeToo movement.

He faced criticism from some activists in 2023 over the choice of the film “Jeanne du Barry” to open the festival, which starred Johnny Depp.

The movie marked Depp’s comeback after a toxic court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard that revealed his turbulent private life involving alcohol, drugs and domestic abuse allegations.

The #MeToo movement shook the French film industry from 2017, as it did Hollywood, exposing widespread sexual misconduct and challenging a long-standing culture of silence.

A recent French parliamentary inquiry into the entertainment industry, sparked by allegations of sexual abuse by actor Judith Godreche, found that the mistreatment of performers was “endemic”.

Inquiry chair Sandrine Rousseau, an outspoken feminist lawmaker from the Green party, called on the Cannes Festival to set an example when the findings were published last month.

“The Cannes Film Festival must be the place where this shift in mindset happens,” she said.

‘Worried’

Navarro-Mussy said he was “worried” about his career, adding that he hoped the fact the case against him had been closed was “taken into account”.

“I have explained myself to the justice system and at this stage have been cleared,” he told Telerama.

His lawyer said that he had not been notified of any appeal against the decision to close the investigation.

Moll, the director of “Dossier 137”, told AFP he was unaware of the allegations against the actor before starting to work with Navarro-Mussy “and during the film nothing happened”.

Moll’s prize-winning previous film, “The Night of the 12th”, tackled the issue of violence against women.

He said he was “very sensitive to this issue”.

Allegations of rape between partners are among the most difficult to prove, meaning prosecutors rarely take them to court unless there is clear evidence.

French screen legend Gerard Depardieu was handed an 18-month suspended sentence on the opening day of the Cannes film festival this year after being convicted of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021.

Amanda Holden did Zoom parents’ evening in swimming costume due to hot weather

Britain’s Got Talent star Amanda Holden, 54, revealed she was wearing a swimsuit and sipping wine for a parents’ evening on Zoom for her child

Amanda Holden revealed she attended a parents’ evening on Zoom wearing a swimming costume while sipping on a glass of wine because of the hot weather. The 54-year-old Britain’s Got Talent star appeared on Good Morning Britain and revealed her child’s teacher said she was “jammy” as they were stuck at school.

“Well, instead of a bikini, I did cover up and wear a swimming costume, can I say,” she confessed. “But it was so hot, and I balanced the iPad here (at her neckline), so they had just this view. But every teacher was like, ‘Oh, you’re so jammy’, because they were all stuck in a stock cupboard somewhere.

“What I didn’t say is that I had a sneaky little rose under my deck chair as well to get through it.” During the conversation, she also discussed her thoughts on the ongoing BGT series.

She said she wanted a group such as the Post Office Choir, a group of people impacted by the Horizon scandal which saw hundreds of subpostmasters wrongly convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting, to win this year’s edition.

Amanda continued: “You know me, I’m not one for sitting on the fence, and I’ve always said that I would love our Britain’s Got Talent winner this year to be a group of people.

“Because it would be amazing for the money to be divvied out amongst all of them, and for the joy to be spread, and to be at the Royal Variety, I think for a choir or a large group of people, would be amazing.”

Amanda recently opened up about the biggest problem of being a mother and wife to her loving family. The star shares daughters Lexi, 19, and Hollie, 13, with her husband Chris Hughes.

The star recently saw her eldest child leave the nest to attend university – but she has been back recently amid a break in the semesters. And while Amanda says she loves to take care of her family and make them dinner each night, the range of culinary requirements can leave her working up a sweat in the kitchen.

Speaking about having to cook individual meals for her family, she said to Hello! magazine: “I try to cook a family meal every night.

“It’s been great recently, because Lexi’s been home from university, so we’ve been back to a family of four. And I’m obviously a vegetarian. Lexi’s practically vegan. Chris and Holly eat meat, so I cook, but I have to make like four different meals.”

She went on to admit she not been the best at teaching her daughters how to cook for themselves. She revealed: “They’re [Hollie and Lexi] getting into the swing of cooking.

“I’ve been a bit rubbish at teaching them how to cook, because I’ve always cooked, but they’re good preppers, and they tidy up after me.”

10 Killed In Fresh Plateau Attack Linked To Cattle Rustling, Farm Destruction

At least 10 people have been killed and several cows rustled in renewed violence in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The recent escalation of violence in Riyom stems from farm destruction, cattle rustling, and attacks on livestock carried out by individuals from both Fulani and Berom communities.

According to a statement from Operation Safe Haven, the recent insecurity in the council area began on Monday, May 12, 2025, when suspected youths slaughtered and rustled cattle that had encroached on their farms in Dayan village, Riyom Local Government Area.

In retaliation, suspected Fulani herders attacked Danchindo village on the evening of May 13, killing four people before fleeing ahead of security operatives’ arrival.

On May 14, 26 cows were killed and several others injured in the Darwat community, allegedly in reprisal for the earlier killings of locals. Later that day, suspected Fulani militias retaliated by attacking an isolated settlement near the Wereng Kam community, killing six locals.

Upon receiving reports of rising tensions in Riyom, officers of the Joint Security Task Force engaged community representatives to broker peace and warned against actions that could further destabilise the fragile situation.

In response to allegations of cattle rustling and slaughtering, one suspect has been arrested and is currently under investigation, while 130 cows have been recovered and returned to their owners.

The statement added that the troops’ swift response prevented the assailants from completely burning down Wereng village. A mop-up operation was launched to neutralise fleeing militants, as troops continue to maintain a strong presence to restore order.

Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commander of Operation Safe Haven and General Officer Commanding 3 Division, visited the area and met with stakeholders and community leaders. Normalcy has returned, supported by the presence of security operatives working to maintain law and order.

This Riyom incident is coming four days after five traders who are residents of Dogon Ruwa community in Bashar district of Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State were abducted during a bandits’ attack on a market in the area.

The incident occurred on Monday morning, the market day, with an influx of traders and buyers from neighbouring communities conducting business activities.

According to residents who escaped the onslaught, the invaders came in large numbers on motorcycles at the peak of business transactions.

They shot sporadically as traders and residents scampered to safety, forcing people to flee the market and their homes.

In the past few months, hundreds of people have been killed and many more displaced after gunmen attacked several communities in the North-Central state.

Inside Cannes Film Festival parties – from £200 goodie bags to pop-up pasta bars

From flowing free bars to expensive goodie bags at the door, Cannes Film Festival has some very impressive invite-only parties for the A-list to let their hair down at.

With Cannes Film Festival in full swing, there’s plenty of parties outside of the official roster that the A-list have been flocking to each night.

And after heading to some on Wednesday night, we’re not surprised they’re a hit with the celebs, or that they are invite only.

TikTok, who are an official sponsor of the festival this year, kicked things off with a party at beachfront bar Copal Beach on Wednesday evening.

But not just anyone could get in, as the beach boulevard was filled with a stretched line of invited guests with TikTok QR codes to secure their place.

In the beach area of the event was a food area, where chefs were preparing fresh pasta, barbequed meats and more for party-goers to pick up. While waiters were also walking around offering mini burgers, tacos, dessert boards and more.

In true TiKTok fashion, there were plenty of influencers at this bash, meaning plenty of photo opportunities. From a TikTok bathtub in the corner to a ring-light set up in the centre, this place was filled with Instagram spots.

But TikTok weren’t the only brand hosting invite-only events for the Cannes Film Festival attendees, with the whole boulevard bustling with exclusive events.

A few doors down was the Nespresso beach, with the coffee brand taking over the area for the duration of the festival. While anyone can head down there for a latte and avocado toast in the day, many evenings are reserved for the A-list.

Sutton’s FA Cup final & Premier League predictions v Barry Can’t Swim

The 144th FA Cup final takes place at Wembley on Saturday – will Manchester City get their hands on the famous old trophy for the eighth time, or can Crystal Palace secure the first major silverware in their 120-year history?

“I would love nothing more than for Palace to win it,” said BBC Sport football expert Chris Sutton.

“I’ve got nothing against City, but Palace have never won anything and winning the FA Cup would be huge for their fans.

“Palace won the Zenith Data Systems Cup in 1991, but you don’t get an open-top bus parade for doing that. If they beat City I’d think about going down to south London to applaud them myself.”

As well as the FA Cup, Sutton is making predictions for every Premier League game this season against a variety of guests.

For all of this weekend’s games in both competitions, he takes on Barry Can’t Swim, aka DJ and producer Joshua Mannie, who is an Everton fan.

Barry Can’t Swim’s latest track, Kimpton (with O’Flynn), is out now, and his new album, Loner, is released in July.

He is performing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025, which takes place from 23 to 25 May in Sefton Park, Liverpool.

Do you agree with their predictions? You can make your own choices below.

The most popular scoreline selected for each Premier League game is used in the scoreboards and tables at the bottom of this page.

Josh Mannie / Barry Can't Swim behind a set of decks

Sunday is a momentous day for all Everton fans, with the men’s team playing their final game at Goodison Park.

The club move to their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock for next season and Josh told BBC Sport: “I’m really excited – it’s long overdue! – but it’s definitely sad at the same time.

“It will probably take a bit of adjusting to, but overall the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. My uncle was at the new stadium a couple weeks ago and apparently it’s amazing.”

After several seasons mostly spent fighting relegation, for a while it was uncertain whether Everton would be a Premier League club when they moved to their new home but Josh feels the future is bright on the pitch now too.

“I can’t remember the last time I was feeling this optimistic,” he added. “There’s a real opportunity for a complete rebuild and have a fresh start with so many players out of contract.

“I’ll be honest I was a bit indifferent when Moyes was hired in January but he’s done such a brilliant job. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather lead us into the new stadium.”

Sutton’s FA Cup final prediction

There is no replay in the FA Cup final. The game will be decided by extra time and penalties.

It hasn’t been the season that Manchester City wanted but their bid for a top-five finish is still in their own hands, despite their slip-up against Southampton last week, and they will see it as being important that they end up with a trophy.

Most clubs would be absolutely delighted with that, including Palace, but for Pep Guardiola and for City, it won’t be good enough.

I just have a feeling this is going to be a classic FA Cup final – I really hope so, anyway.

We know Palace can cause City problems from their trip to Etihad Stadium a few weeks ago.

City won 5-2 in the end but I don’t think that scoreline really reflects what a close contest it was – Palace went 2-0 up and only a marginal offside call stopped them from leading 3-0 before Pep’s side fought back.

That will give Palace plenty of confidence, even though City will be favourites and have got lots more experience of a big occasion.

So, this will be close. I am going to go with my heart over my head and say that, this time, Palace will win.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Let’s face it, everyone on the planet thinks Aston Villa will win this – the same way everyone will expect Chelsea to beat Manchester United in Friday’s other game.

The way both Tottenham and United are approaching next week’s Europa League final, they are just gripped with fear. It has become like a World Cup final for both clubs.

Both managers will make lots of changes for their matches on Friday, because they are so afraid of injuries to key players but I just don’t think that is the way to approach Wednesday’s game in Bilbao.

Compare it to Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has been playing his strongest team in the run-up to Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou does not want anyone to get injured but the flip side to leaving key people out is that you want to go into a big game with a bit of momentum, and Tottenham do not have any.

I put myself in a position of a Spurs player, and if I am Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero, I would want to play against Villa and I would want to take that risk.

But what Postecoglou is scared of, naturally, is if something happens to one of them, because then he would be asked ‘why on earth did you do that?’

So, we know what he will do and, because of that, you can’t make a case for Tottenham beating Villa, or getting anything at all from this game.

On the face of it, things have turned out pretty well for Villa haven’t they? Last summer they would have looked at their last two games of the season – Spurs at home on Friday and United away next weekend – and thought that is very tough.

Now, though, they must be rubbing their hands. They are fighting for a top-five finish and they finish up with two games against teams whose focus this week is completely on an all together different prize.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Like Villa with Tottenham, Chelsea could not have picked a better time to play Manchester United. This is a great opportunity for them in their bid for a top-five finish.

Chelsea are without suspended striker Nicolas Jackson after his red card against Newcastle, which ended their hopes of getting anything at St James’ Park.

I am not sure who will play up front on Friday instead of Jackson, or who will get their goals, but I still fully expect Enzo Maresca’s side to win.

Manchester United have still been fielding strong teams despite all the changes they have been making around their Europa League ties, but you would not think it from their performances or results.

It is not as if Ruben Amorim has been putting out his Under-18s in recent weeks but their Premier League form is dismal and I can’t see any reason why that will change here.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

As you all know, it’s not often I’m wrong about anything but you may remember me saying in a previous predictions article that I thought I held the record for the fastest senior goal at Goodison Park for my effort after 12.94 seconds for Blackburn in 1995 until Abdoulaye Doucoure scored after 10.18 seconds for Everton against Leicester in February.

It turns out the fastest goal before Doucoure was actually by Bournemouth’s Colin Clarke, after 11 seconds in a League Cup tie in 1985, but I still hold the record for the fastest away goal there in a men’s league game and no-one is taking that away from me, because I don’t think Southampton will score at all on Sunday.

Saints will probably be too exhausted from their celebrations after last week’s draw with Manchester City to ruin the party as Everton’s men’s team play their last game at Goodison after 133 years.

I have not got a problem with the Southampton fans celebrating reaching 12 points and avoiding equalling Derby’s record for the worst Premier League points tally because they have had to endure an awful season, but it is absolute amateur hour from their players to react the way they did afterwards.

People will say it was down to emotion but how low is your bar if you see that as an achievement? The team should have thanked the supporters, and cleared off down the tunnel.

Everton got taken apart in the first half by Fulham last time out, but were much better in the second half and went to win 3-1 at Craven Cottage.

It would be typical for them to mess up on their big day, but they won’t. I fancy Beto to get a goal, and the Toffees to sign off with a win.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-0

Barry Can’t Swim’s prediction: One big last send off at Goodison Park, Moyesey in the dugout, the noise will be amazing, the players will be up for it. I hope they give it the send off it deserves. 5-0

Barry Can’t Swim on Everton’s best player this season: It’s hard to say, but I’d probably go with Jordan Pickford. He’s so consistent and reliable and gives the back-line confidence.

Also, while he’s not our player of the season, I think Beto deserves a lot of credit for the impact he’s made since Moyes came in too. He was totally written off but has scored a fair amount of goals.

Who would he sign in the summer? I actually think wing-backs are a priority, and a right winger. Oh, and a forward too.

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds.

This is a huge game for my boyhood side, Nottingham Forest.

They need to win to keep their hopes of a top-five finish alive, but my fear is they have already blown it.

I played at the City Ground many times but I think my stint there as a Sky pundit for last weekend’s draw with Leicester was the first time I’ve watched a game there rather than been on the pitch, and it was not enjoyable viewing for us Forest fans.

I thought that game was a must-win for Forest’s Champions League hopes, and if they drop more points here they could drop out of contention completely.

I’ve heard some people say that Forest have bottled it, but I don’t agree. They have just run out of steam.

Forest’s aim now is to get to next weekend and still be in touch before they host Chelsea in their final game of the season, but whether that happens or not relies on which West Ham team turns up.

The Hammers were on a poor run before they went to Old Trafford last weekend and won. That would usually be an impressive result but it is not much of an achievement at the moment.

I know who I want to win but, for different reasons, it is hard to back either side here.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra 2 and BBC Sounds.

I am looking at every game this week as the one that could make or break my chances of defending my predictions title but, whatever I say here, I know I’ll be wrong because I’ve found Fulham almost impossible to call all season.

I was actually spot on with my prediction when they beat Brentford 2-1 in November, but only because Harry Wilson scored two injury-time goals.

On form, the Bees are favourites here after winning their past four games, but Fulham have the ability to beat anyone, and they also usually do the opposite of what I think.

Maybe I am best off going with a draw, because the opposite of that is still a draw.

On top of that, I think everyone else will go for a home win so this could be the result that makes the difference for me – I need it to, because my title is on the line after two successive seasons where I have triumphed.

The guests can steal my crown with another win this week but I’d like everyone to take a look at my points tally [see tables below] as proof of who the predictions king really is.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-2

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Leicester were really good against Nottingham Forest last week once Ruud van Nistelrooy had made some substitutions, but they were terrible before he changed things.

It took a 94th-minute equaliser from Jordan Ayew to deny Ipswich a win when Leicester came to Portman Road in November but that was when both sides were still fighting to stay up, which feels like an awfully long time ago now.

What a desperate game this is for both teams, because the only prize for the winner is 18th place.

I am backing Leicester to take it, and it would be fitting for Jamie Vardy to mark his final home game for the club with his 200th Foxes goal.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds.

This is a big game with second place up for grabs, and it is a bit of a grudge match too.

Newcastle have beaten Arsenal three times already this season and their meetings have been quite spiky since the Magpies grabbed a controversial win over Mikel Arteta’s side in 2023.

Arsenal will be absolutely desperate to put one over them this time, but I can see this turning into a real battle and I would not be surprised if it ends up in a draw.

That is a better result for the Gunners, because a point would all but guarantee them a Champions League place – their goal difference is much better than the other teams in that race – even if their fans will want more.

Sutton’s prediction: 1-1

What information do we collect from this quiz?

It’s so hard to make a prediction for this game because I have no idea what the Liverpool line-up will look like, or what their mindset will be.

Arne Slot’s side will lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield after their final game of the season against Crystal Palace next weekend. Their work is done, and they have got that party to look forward to, so how focused will they be here?

As things stand, Brighton do have something to play for because eighth place will get them in the Europa Conference League, if Manchester City win the FA Cup.

The Seagulls played really well at Wolves last week, and fully deserved their win.

They gave Liverpool a good game at Anfield earlier in the season, when they led 1-0 at half-time but lost 2-1, and if Slot picks a weakened team then they are good enough to take advantage.

Sutton’s prediction: 2-1

How did Sutton do last week?

Sutton got three correct results with no exact scores from the 10 Premier League games in week 36, giving him a total of 30 points.

That was enough to tie with the BBC readers – using the most popular scoreline from your predictions for each game, you also got three correct results, with no exact scores.

But it was Sutton’s guests, grime stars Footsie and Strategy, who took the weekly win to move back to the top of the table with only two weeks to go.
