Al-Qaeda affiliate claims 200 soldiers killed in Burkina Faso attack

An al-Qaeda affiliate has claimed it killed 200 soldiers in an attack on a Burkina Faso army base this week, according to an NGO that tracks armed groups’ online activity.

The base in the northern town of Djibo came under attack on Sunday morning, and a police station and market were also targeted, security sources told the news agency Reuters. Although there was no official toll, three Djibo residents told Reuters that dozens of soldiers and civilians were killed.

Al Jazeera was not able to independently verify the death toll. A Burkina Faso military source told Al Jazeera that the armed group was exaggerating the number of casualties.

The United States-based SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks online activity of armed groups, said Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) made the claim in a formal statement.

“The operation comes amid increased JNIM activity in Burkina Faso over the past month inflicting a high number of casualties,” SITE said.

The organisation previously said Ousmane Dicko, head of JNIM in Burkina Faso, had appeared in a video urging residents of Djibo to leave the town for their own safety.

Reporting from Dakar, Senegal, Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque said the attack took place over a number of days.

“One of the major military outposts that was supposed to protect this town of about 200,000 people was razed to the ground, such was the firepower of the armed groups,” said Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque, reporting from Senegal, Dakar.

“This is one of the deadliest attacks in Burkina Faso, and it comes just as Ibrahim Traore [Burkina Faso’s military leader] has been saying that the country has been gaining territory, encouraging people to go back to their homes, but this latest attack proves the opposite,” said Haque.

A video circulating on social media from the al-Qaeda affiliate warned people to leave their homes and said it would seize more territories.

“What we’re seeing here is the pivot point where these armed groups that normally attack villages are now trying to take over towns. It’s a major blow for Burkina Faso’s armed forces,” Haque said, noting the attacks come just as Traore was visiting Russia, asking President Vladimir Putin for more training and arms to fight off armed groups.

JNIM claimed responsibility for another assault this week targeting a military post in Burkina Faso’s northern Loroum province in which the group said 60 soldiers were killed, according to SITE.

The attacks highlight the difficulties the three Sahel nations of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, ruled by military leaders, are facing in containing the armed groups.

Burkina Faso authorities have not commented on the latest attacks.

A notable attack occurred in the Burkina town of Sole, where JNIM fighters raided the army military post and killed soldiers, SITE Intelligence said, without specifying on which day it took place.

JAMB Error: Responsible Parties Should Be Punished – Ex-Provost

Former Provost of the College of Education, Ilesa, now University of Education, Ilesa, Osun State, Professor Kolawole Kola-Kazeem, has described the error by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as a clear case of human failure.

He demanded that those responsible for the error be held accountable to prevent a recurrence.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Professor Kola-Kazeem noted the emotional gravity of the situation and the need for systemic change.

“If you see a 70-year-old man cry on live television, that should speak volumes. That tells you the situation is beyond what he feels should be. That tells you how big the situation is.

“We should understand that whatever has happened is based on human error, and whoever is responsible for all of these infractions should be dealt with. One of the things we have here is that each time there are infractions, there are no consequences. Consequences must be given,” he stated.

Professor Kazeem also highlighted the unjust impact on students, and said that necessary amendments should be made.

“Some children have been punished unnecessarily, unjustifiably. So we should find a way of ensuring that such things do not repeat themselves. We must support the Registrar to make all the necessary amendments so that this does not happen again,” he said.

Reduction Of Exam Process

Education and human resource expert, Yomi Fawehinmi, also criticised JAMB’s handling of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). He questioned the board’s decision to continue with the exams despite noticing technical issues and called for comprehensive reform of the university admissions process.

“These errors were not discovered because JAMB did enough self-introspection. If you read the press release by the Registrar, he said they noticed something went wrong while the examination was ongoing.

“I’m concerned that JAMB noticed something was not right and did not immediately stop the exam,” the expert noted.

Fawehinmi expressed concern about the pressure on Nigerian students, noting that the number of exams written to gain admission should be reduced.

He further suggested a narrowing of JAMB’s responsibilities, proposing that it focus solely on university admissions as originally intended in the 1978 decree.

“Nigerian students should not write three exams to gain admission. I don’t think we should have more than two. We should reduce the number of institutions that require JAMB for admission.

“Let JAMB focus on university admission. The focus would be more concentrated, and people would have alternatives if they don’t succeed with JAMB,” he added.

JAMB Admits Error

The ex-provost and an education expert made their comments shortly after JAMB admitted that technical glitches affected candidates’ performance in the 2025 UTME.

At a press briefing in Abuja, JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede apologised for the setback, calling it a “human error.” He confirmed that 379,997 affected candidates would retake the exam starting 16 May 2025.

The board stated that the glitch occurred in 157 of 887 centres and was the reason for the widespread low scores. Affected candidates will be contacted to reprint their exam slips.

JAMB’s data showed that over 78 per cent of the 1.95 million candidates scored below 200. Only 12,414 candidates scored 300 or more, and 983,187 scored between 160 and 199—the highest category.

Additionally, 40,247 underage candidates were allowed to sit the exam under “exceptional abilities,” but only 467 met the threshold.

The board also reported 97 confirmed cases of malpractice, with 2,157 more under investigation. Over 71,000 candidates were absent, while those facing biometric challenges are under review.

McIlroy struggles as Ryder Cup captains impress at US PGA

2025 US PGA Championship first round

Leaders: -5 Gerard (US); -4 Donald (Eng), Fox (NZ), Jaeger (Ger), Smalley (US)

Selected others: -3 Bradley (US), Fitzpatrick (Eng), MacIntyre (Sco); -2 Scheffler (US); -1 Rahm (Spa) Fleetwood (Eng); +1 Schauffele (US); +2 Lowry (Ire); +3 McIlroy (NI)

Masters champion Rory McIlroy slipped eight shots off the lead on day one of the US PGA Championship after a disappointing round of three over par.

American Ryan Gerard set the pace at five under while Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley both impressed among the early starters at Quail Hollow.

Englishman Donald shot a bogey-free 67 while Bradley, who will lead the United States team in September’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, dropped his only shot at the last to finish at three under par.

McIlroy, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning at Augusta in April, managed just two birdies in his round of 74.

The 36-year-old was playing in the same group as world number one Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Xander Schauffele, who finished at two under and one over respectively.

All three struggled at times on day one, but Scheffler birdied two of his final three holes to keep himself in touch with the leaders.

Leader Gerard, 25, has only a missed cut and a tie for 56th in the 2023 US Open on his major resume, but heated up around the turn with four birdies and an eagle between hole 10 and 15 to move three shots clear.

However, bogeys at the 17th and 18th robbed him of his commanding position.

Alongside Donald on four under was Germany’s Stephan Jaeger, while Sweden’s Alex Noren, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre all ended at three under par to ensure a healthy European contingent near the top of the leaderboard.

What went wrong for McIlroy?

Thirty-two days after a dramatic finale at Augusta, which saw him become only the sixth player in history to win all four majors, most eyes were on McIlroy as he headed out as part of a three-ball containing the world’s top three-ranked players.

McIlroy – the US PGA champion in 2012 and 2014 – has an excellent record at Quail Hollow, winning four PGA Tour events there during his career.

The world number two started with a birdie at the par-five 10th – his first hole of the day – but gave that shot straight back by three-putting for bogey on the 11th green.

Another birdie followed on 15, but the marquee trio faltered at the entrance to Quail Hollow’s penal three-hole stretch, the ‘Green Mile’.

All three left the 16th hole with double bogeys after McIlroy put his tee shot into the thick rough and Scheffler and Schauffele dumped their approaches in the water.

After a series of pars, five-time major winner McIlroy ended his round with another dropped shot on his final hole, having found just four of 14 fairways from the tee.

‘I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t Ryder Cup captain’

There had been heavy rainfall in the days leading up to the tournament but, in drier conditions on Thursday morning in North Carolina, Donald was one of several surprising names to be found near the top of the leaderboard.

The 47-year-old, who hit the first shot of the tournament at 07:00 local time, had told BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter before the event that success would simply be making the weekend.

Birdies on the fourth, eighth, 10th and 14th holes made light of his pre-tournament expectations.

Donald, whose best US PGA finish was a tie for third spot in 2006, said afterwards: “I’m here only because I’m captain of the European Ryder Cup Team. I wouldn’t be in this field otherwise.

“Bogey-free in a major championship on a course that you wouldn’t have thought would be ideal for me is always fun.”

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox, who only secured his place by winning the Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday, finished alongside Donald on four under.

Also posting a first-round 67 was American Alex Smalley, who was a late addition to the field after world number 31 Sahith Theegala pulled out because of injury on the eve of the tournament.

How Oshiomhole Linked Me To Tinubu, Kickstarted My Political Career — Desmond Elliot

Nollywood actor Desmond Elliot has opened up about his unexpected transition from the screen to the political stage, crediting former Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole for introducing him to President Bola Tinubu and laying the groundwork for his political career.

The Lagos State House of Assembly member representing the Surulere Constituency spoke in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.

Describing his early political connections, the 51-year-old actor recalled how Adams Oshiomhole invited him to meet Tinubu in Benin.

“One certain day, Oshiomhole told me—Comrade Senator—that Asiwaju (Tinubu) was coming to Benin. I think the next week or two weeks later, he asked me to come, to which I did. As Asiwaju came, I was on the table, and I was in awe seeing great personalities.

“Adams stood up, asked me to come, took me to Asiwaju on that table and said, ‘This is my son.’ He said, ‘Yeah, he knows me; he knows me.’ And he said, ‘He’s interested. This is my son.’ Asiwaju says, ‘Okay,’ now links me up with Sunday Dare, who then was his PA, because you can’t meet Asiwaju all the time,” he stated.

Elliot recalled how Tinubu took a liking to him early on, expressing surprise that a young actor like him would be so interested in politics.

“And I’ll tell you one of the remarkable things that happened. One day, we went to visit Asiwaju. And then, the man just, for some reason, loved me. I don’t know, maybe because he just thought, ‘This young boy who is having a career, what is this boy coming to look for here? But I was always talking with Uncle Sunday: ‘Oh, I want to see Daddy. I want to see Asiwaju.”

He recounted a memorable visit to Tinubu’s home with fellow actors during an election period when Tinubu was no longer running.

“And then one Sunday—it was one of these elections a long time ago—he wasn’t running. We went to see one of the aspirants—myself, Jide Kosoko, Mike Ezuruonye, and Chinedu ‘Aki’ Ikediezie —just like, you know, this particular aspirant was coming to see. And then we talked, and Uncle Jide just said, ‘You know what, let’s go to Asiwaju’s house.’ Then he was the former governor.

“We’ll just go to his house like that. You won’t believe me—we got there like seven. We didn’t leave there till after midnight. He was talking to us like we just woke up in the morning and said, ‘Daddy, good morning, we are going out.’

“We, the actors, were just sitting there, and we were gisting with him, talking with him. Certain things happened in his government—he told us what he did to make certain things move. When we came out, Uncle Jide Kosoko was saying, ‘I said so; I told you guys. ‘You see, you see.’ I was so excited.”

‘Drifting To Politics’

Long before stepping into politics, Desmond Elliot said his passion for public service had been ignited in the 1990s, inspired by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

“In the mid-90s, when I started reading about MKO Abiola—Gospel truth—I became fascinated. I became very interested,” he said. “I didn’t have much money, but there’s this newspaper they used to sell in those days. I would read about this guy. I would read his story. I got so encouraged, and something kept pricking my heart, you know, that this is where you’re supposed to go through.

“In my heart, I’ve always known that everything I would do, I would have to walk with God on it. So one time I was praying, like, ‘God, okay, what of my life? What am I going to do?’ And he says, ‘No, just look at it one day at a time.’ As every day comes, everything begins to unravel, and you begin to understand,” the actor stated.

He credited APC chieftain Fouad Oki for mentoring him politically, even while he was still focused on his acting career.

“Even while acting, I’d visit Uncle Fouad Oki in the evenings to discuss politics. I was learning. My wife didn’t even take me seriously at the time,” he said.

2023 General Elections

On the subject of the highly publicised 2023 election for the Surulere constituency, Elliot addressed his face-off with fellow actor Olumide Oworu, who contested under the Labour Party banner during a time of rising youth political engagement.

“I wasn’t angry at Olumide. He’s a smart, intelligent Surulere guy. It wasn’t about him. I was hurt by colleagues—people I’ve worked with—who endorsed him without even a conversation.”

Elliot argued that political continuity, especially in the legislature, is key to real progress, citing the example of former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

“Look at Gbaja. His impact grew term after term. That’s how institutional change works. It’s not just about one election—it’s about building capacity.”

Gender Status

The actor has been making headlines over his gender status, given his unconventional outfit choices.

He, however, in a 2024 viral interview, refuted claims that he was gay. But addressing the clip with Chude, Elliot expressed frustration at how the media spun his response.

“I didn’t even know that question was coming,” he said. “I said for the record, I’m straight. But my pastor later called me and said I shouldn’t have even answered.”

The politician emphasised the importance of staying grounded amid public scrutiny.

Williams says ‘more left in the tank’ after Saracens exit

Huw Evans Agency

Wales full-back Liam Williams believes he still has plenty to offer as he looks for a new club for next season.

The 34-year-old will leave Saracens at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Williams has not played since suffering a knee injury in Wales’ defeat by France in their opening Six Nations game in January.

He had surgery three months ago and has been doing some of his rehabilitation with the Wales medical team.

The former British and Irish Lion is expected to be fit for the start of the 2025-26 campaign after undergoing a full pre-season, although he will not be available for Wales’ summer tour of Japan.

“I think I’ve still got some more left in the tank,” said Williams.

Williams says he is aiming to end his career “on a high”.

“In the past two years I have struggled a bit with injury, but that’s the sport we play,” he added.

“I understand I’m not going to play 30 games a season at my age, but I am more than willing to go into the trenches with the boys for a couple more seasons.”

Williams is keen to take some coaching responsibility alongside playing.

“The first thing is for me is to play and then maybe help some of the younger guys through, whether it be on the pitch or with off the pitch stuff,” he said.

Joining Wales’ 100-cap club

The France game was Williams’ 93rd for Wales, while he has also featured in five Tests for the British and Irish Lions.

He has set his sights on becoming the 10th Welshman to reach 100 caps for his country after Alun Wyn Jones, Gethin Jenkins, George North, Dan Biggar, Taulupe Faletau, Stephen Jones, Martyn Williams, Leigh Halfpenny and Gareth Thomas.

“I’d like to get to the 100-cap milestone but the first thing is to get fit and back on the field,” he said.

Williams had returned to Six Nations action this year after missing the 2024 tournament while he had a stint in Japanese rugby with Kubota Spears.

As he comes to the end of his second spell with Saracens after returning from Japan, Williams says he does not mind where he goes next.

“We’re pretty open-minded,” he added.

“Obviously it’d be nice to stay in Wales and help some of the youngsters through, whether that be in the national squad or our regions.
