How have British men improved on ‘alien surface’ of clay?

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

Three British men have advanced to the third round of the French Open singles for the first time in almost 60 years.

In a Thursday night thriller, Jack Draper defeated home favorite Gael Monfils to join Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie in the 32-player field.

Federico Gomez, an Argentine qualifier, was defeated by Norrie, while Fearnley advanced after his French foe, Ugo Humbert, retired with an injury.

And with Norrie and Fearnley meeting on Saturday night, there is a chance of at least one Briton in the fourth round for the first time in eight years.

Andy Murray, the former world number one, has been a raro for British men on Roland Garros’ clay courts since 1968, but that is no longer the case.

acquiring a basic understanding of an “alien surface”

Draper, the British no. 1, has since reached the Madrid Open final last month and is now ranked fifth in the world.

After a difficult first few years, Norrie, 29, and Fearnley, 23, both made encouraging progress in their first full professional seasons.

Such advancement has not happened overnight.

During her professional career, former British number one Annabel Croft traveled to America to practice on clay.

It appeared to be from an alien planet. It was similar to other players who had recently arrived from America and started playing grass. She remarked on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra that it was “like a different sport.”

“When you suddenly go on to a clay court, the ball is coming back, and you learned how to make a point.

The entire mentality transforms into something entirely new.

Another inquest into the lack of British success on clay was resulted from last year’s first-round wipeout of British singles players.

British players historically have had less exposure to clay courts than many of their rivals, especially those from other European and South American countries.

According to the LTA, there were approximately 1,300 clay courts in Great Britain in 2024, or roughly 5% of the 23, 000 total courts. In contrast, clay is used to make up 60% of Spain’s top-of-the-surface courts.

How the British are breaking through obstacles to success

The National Tennis Centre in Roehampton has four clay courts constructed to the same standards as those at the Monte Carlo Masters.

In order for young players to attend camps and training sessions, the governing body is also “forming new partnerships” with clay-court facilities in Barcelona and Girona.

Both Norrie and Fearnley both attended Texas Christian University in America, where they both majored in their respective fields. It aided in the development of a “steady mentality,” which is so important on clay courts.

“Norrie is very much someone Fearnley and the others at TCU looked up to,” said BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller.

After winning Indian Wells and achieving success in other major tournaments, Norrie would return to practice while he was an ATP Tour player.

Norrie was the model Norrie and Fearnley were attempting to emulate when they had the opportunity to practice with him.

What equipment is required for clay-making?

In a video posted by the LTA before the season started, Draper and Fearnley were shown sliding.

One of the most important abilities that players need to master to succeed on clay is sliding.

It was probably my first time doing it since maybe 2017, according to Fearnley when that video was taken.

It’s still something I’m getting used to, and feeling the movement is crucial.

The tennis stays essentially the same, but the movement is different, according to one expert.

Players can return the ball from a defensive position with a slide-in to a shot and change their position more quickly to make a more aggressive shot.

Because clay is a much slower surface than grass, it results in more rallies, longer points, and more running.

A high level of fitness is unavoidable, and it is one of the main factors in Draper’s success on clay this year. Both Fearnley and Norrie are engine-driven, as well.

Players must also feel at ease when using a different approach.

Rafael Nadal, a 14-time champion, has his lefty forehand in mind when you think of him playing at the French Open.

He hit with heavy top spin, which was a key component of his success, thanks to his grip and follow-through with the racquet.

French Open 2025

Dates: 25 May-8 June Venue: Roland Garros

For the first time in almost 60 years, three British men have reached the French Open singles third round.

Jack Draper beat home favourite Gael Monfils in a Thursday night thriller to join Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie in the last 32.

Norrie had earlier overcome Argentine qualifier Federico Gomez, while Fearnley progressed when French opponent Ugo Humbert retired with injury.

And there is guaranteed to be at least one Briton in the fourth round for the first time in eight years, with Norrie and Fearnley meeting on Saturday night.

Success has been scarce for British men on the clay courts at Roland Garros since 1968 – former world number one Andy Murray aside.

Getting to grips with an ‘alien surface’

British number one Draper has become a genuine force on clay, having reached the Madrid Open final last month and climbed to fifth in the world.

Fearnley, also 23, is continuing to make encouraging strides in his first full season as a professional, while 29-year-old Norrie has rediscovered his form after a testing few years.

Such progress has not happened overnight.

Former British number one Annabel Croft travelled to America to train on clay during her playing career.

“It was such an alien surface. It was like other players coming over from America and learning how to play on grass. It was like a different sport,” she said on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

“When you’re suddenly going on to a clay court, the ball is coming back and you learned how to construct a point.

“The whole mentality becomes something completely different.”

Last year’s first-round wipeout of British singles players prompted another inquest into the lack of British success on clay.

Historically, British players have not had as much exposure to clay courts as many of their rivals, particularly those from other European and South American nations.

The LTA said in 2024 there were about 1,300 clay-courts in Great Britain – around 5% of the 23,000 total number of courts. In contrast, about 60% of courts in Spain – one of the leading nations on the surface – are clay.

How Brits are overcoming barriers to success

The LTA has four clay courts – built to the same specification of the courts used at the Monte Carlo Masters – at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.

The governing body is also continuing to “form new partnerships” with clay-court facilities in Barcelona and Girona so young players can attend camps and training sessions.

Norrie and Fearnley’s development took place overseas, with both players attending the Texas Christian University in America. It helped develop a steely mentality – something so crucial on clay courts.

“Norrie is very much somebody who Fearnley and the others at TCU looked up to,” said BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller.

“Norrie would come back to practice while he was an ATP Tour player after he won Indian Wells and had success in other big tournaments.

“Fearnley and the others got a chance to practice with him and Norrie was the man they were trying to emulate.

What tools are needed to succeed on clay?

Before the season began, Draper and Fearnley were shown practising sliding in a video posted by the LTA.

Sliding is one of the key skills players must master to succeed on clay.

“When that video was taken, it was probably the first time I was doing it since maybe 2017,” Fearnley said.

“It’s still something I’m getting used to, and it is extremely important, feeling the movement.

“I would say that is probably the biggest difference on clay – the tennis stays pretty similar, but it’s more the movement that is different.”

By being able to slide in to a shot, players can return the ball from a defensive position, and adjust their position more quickly to play a more aggressive shot.

Clay is a much slower surface than grass, which leads to longer points, more rallies and more running.

A high level of fitness is non-negotiable – and has been one of the key reasons for Draper’s success on clay this year. Fearnley and Norrie are both renowned for their engines, too.

Players must also be comfortable hitting the ball in a different way.

When you think of 14-time champion Rafael Nadal holding court at the French Open, it is his lefty forehand that comes to mind.

The grip and follow-through with the racquet allowed him to hit with heavy top spin – a key component of his success.

BBC breaks silence on Wynne Evans axing with blunt statement after Strictly scandal

Go Compare advert star Wynne Evans has confirmed he has been axed by the BBC following the Strictly Come Dancing scandals – as he shared an emotional statement with fans

The BBC has confirmed that Wynne Evans will not return to present on BBC Radio Wales after he said, “The BBC has decided not to renew my contract”. Evans, 53, known for the Go.Compare insurance advertisements, revealed in January, he would be taking some time out from both his radio show and the Strictly tour to prioritise his wellbeing.

On Friday, a spokesperson for the BBC said: “Wynne Evans is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales and there are currently no plans to work with him”. An apology had been issued earlier this year on behalf of Evans over “inappropriate language” used during the Strictly tour launch in January.

Wynne hit the headlines for multiple reasons during his time on the BBC dance show. He was shown grabbing his professional partner Katya’s waist before she pushed his hand away, but he later insisted it was a joke.

He then came under fire for using the term ‘spit roast’ to Janette Manrara during a Strictly photocall, but he later insisted it was directed at Jamie Borthwick and had nothing to do with Janette. As a result of the comment, he was axed from the Strictly tour – and then a video emerged of him sending a sex toy to his co-star Jamie, which both were heavily criticised for.

Now Wynne has revealed he has not had his contract renewed and he will not be back with the BBC for his radio show – and thus has decided to continue to do his radio show away from the BBC.

“My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart – thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know,” he said in an

“It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won’t be returning to my radio show. I’m gutted. That show wasn’t just work – it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family.”

He continued: “But here’s what I believe with everything I’ve got: what we built cannot end here. So – deep breath — here goes… We’re getting the band back together. The Wynne Evans Show is coming back, live every day from 9am–12pm on a new app, on Alexa and Google (we don’t have to say ‘smart speaker’ anymore!) and at www.wynneevansshow.co.uk.

“This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever. We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again.”

Back in January, Wynne issued a message to say he was taking some time away. He said at the time: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that I’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.

“I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. Apologies to those I won’t get to see at the remaining performances and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support.”

At the time, Wynne was also grieving the loss of his brother Huw and said he found out about the BBC’s decision to originally suspend him when his BBC pass no longer worked and had been deactivated without warning.

‘I Think He Wants To Stay’: Amorim Hopeful On Fernandes Future

In light of rumors about a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, Bruno Fernandes’ captain, Ruben Amorim, said on Friday that he thinks he wants to stay at Manchester United.

With a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong, Fernandes’ opener, with Chido Obi, a teenage substitute, scoring twice, set up United’s game.

During the post-season break, manager Amorim has plenty to think about after taking over from Erik ten Hag during the campaign but leading United to a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League.

The future of key player Fernandes, who is reportedly considering a big-money move to Al Hilal, is foremost among his concerns.

When asked if Fernandes, 30,’s last appearance in a United shirt, did Amorim respond, “I don’t think so, I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so.”

He appears to be seeing some actions and attempts to alter everything, and I believe he wants to stay.

Amorim continued, “I talk to him, I explained some things, and I just have that feeling when you talk to someone, I think you have that feeling if he wants to stay.”

United were underwhelming in the first half of their second post-season friendly on Wednesday, being beaten and booed off in Malaysia as they put a dent in their campaign.

After being let down by a soft Hong Kong goal, Obi made a smart turn and scored again five minutes later, heading home with a glancing header.

United ended their Asia trip on a high note with a late header from Ayden Heaven.

Before going off, Portugal international Fernandes had a successful opening half at the 40, 000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium, which was about 85 percent capacity.

Despite having the appearance to be leaving Old Trafford, Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho also started.

In southern China, where it was light rain all afternoon and evening, Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund were the first regulars to feature.

The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute with their first attack, but Fernandes and Garnacho were in the first half against a Hong Kong team that was ranked 153rd in the world.

Tom Heaton, the stand-in goalkeeper for United, made a poor save from Juninho, who was born in Brazil, who slipped into the net.

Amorim had his hands on his hips as he sat.

Fernandes should have scored when clean through, but he was denied because of the raindrops and the wind.

Jeremie Frimpong has been signed for 35 million euros (£29.95 million) from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal by Liverpool.

The Premier League champions ratified their move for Dutch international Frimpong after activating the 24-year-old’s release clause just hours after Real Madrid announced Trent Alexander-Arnold would join them in time to compete in the Club World Cup.

Frimpong, a versatile right-footer, is regarded as Alexander-Arnold’s replacement in Arne Slot’s squad.

He contributed significantly to Leverkusen’s 2023-2024 title defense and made 53 appearances overall as they finished second overall in 24-25.

Before making a move to Leverkusen in January 2021, the Dutchman started out at Manchester City as a youth and later joined Celtic.

At Liverpool, Frimpong joins Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch from the Netherlands.

Leverkusen and Liverpool are also interested in signing Florian Wirtz.

The club have advanced their bids for German international Wirtz, with a total of about £109 million.

It’s not just your skin that needs protecting from the sun in summer; your hair does too – and REHAB has launched a new travel-friendly hair oil that does exactly that, while also “stopping frizz”, say shoppers.

REHAB – which counts Stacey Solomon as not only a fan but a business partner too – has just launched its new Sunshine Spritz UV Protection Hair Oil, debuting with a 20% discount, taking it down from its usual price of £26 to £20.80. This oil features a blend of strand-smoothing oils but octocrylene to protect against UV rays, plus it comes in REHAB’s trademark single-use capsules, which are perfect for travelling, enabling you to take as few or as many as you need.

Sunshine Spritz Hair Oil may have only just launched but it has already racked up a high number of positive reviews from happy shoppers, with almost all of them five star ones.

“As with every single other Rehab product I have purchased, this new oil is gorgeous,” one loyal fan wrote. “Am currently using it now in 95 degree heat. Protecting my hair and stopping the frizz. I love it.”

“This was so amazing! My hair felt so soft and the smell of the oil is wonderful. I think its my favourite,” another agreed.

A third customer wrote how they though it was “probably the best frizzy relaxer [they’ve] used so far” and that it “smells great”, although did explain how “the first time I used this I used it all over, but now I don’t put it in my roots. It can make your hair look greasy.” This is good advice to follow when using any hair oil, as most don’t need to be applied over the whole length of the hair.

As part of REHAB’s new Sunshine Spritz range, there’s also a product to protect another delicate part of your body from the sun: your lips. SPF Lip Oil, usually £16 but currently £12.80, has a glossy finish and contains SPF 15 to add shine while it shields. Shoppers can also save even more when they buy the two products together in the UV Hair Oil & SPF Lip Oil Bundle for £31.50 instead of the usual £42.

If you prefer sun protection for your hair in a spray instead, Pantene has just launched its Pro-V Sunkiss Glow Hair Spray, £12, which contains ingredients to defend against UV, salt and chlorine – all things that can damage your hair – or your hair’s colour – when on holiday.
