Australia opens mushroom murder trial

In Australia, a woman is facing a murder charge after serving three elderly people with poisonous mushrooms for lunch.

After allegedly serving four guests, including her estranged in-laws, Beef Wellington laced with toxic mushrooms, to a jury at Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court in the state of Victoria in southeast Australia in 2023, Erin Patterson, 50, is facing trial by jury.

The quartet’s members were unable to survive, and Heather Wilkinson, Gail’s sister, and her mother-in-law, Donald Patterson, were all found dead in a Patterson home.

The attempted murder of Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, who recovered from a nearly two-month hospital stay in Leongatha, a town of about 6, 000 people, some 135 kilometers (85 miles) from Melbourne, has been dropped by the prosecution.

On all counts, Patterson entered a not-guilty plea.

On Tuesday, the court began its jury selection process. On Wednesday morning, the case’s opening arguments are scheduled to start. The case has gripped Australia and caused headlines all over the world.

On Australian streaming service Stan, the case has led to a number of podcasts and even television shows.

In a daily ballot, the courtroom will have six seats reserved for the media. In the court’s overflow room, dozens more people are expected to observe proceedings.

The case won’t be broadcast while the court is accessible to the public. Five to six weeks are anticipated for the trial.

Hurts among Eagles players to skip White House visit

To celebrate their victory in the Super Bowl, Jalen Hurts and a number of Philadelphia Eagles team members opted not to attend a White House reception with US President Donald Trump.

According to a White House official, Hurts, 26, and other players had “scheduling conflicts.”

Less than half of the team showed up on Monday, and players were not required to attend.

In February, Philadelphia defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in New Orleans.

Trump praised the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player as a “terrific guy and terrific player” despite Hurts’ absence.

He continued, “The Eagles have turned out to be an incredible team and group.”

AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Brandon Graham were among the non-players who registered, according to American broadcaster NBC.

Philadelphia’s White House visit was canceled in 2018 after most players decided to stay away following their first Super Bowl victory.

The team never made it clear that this was the cause of their absence, despite there still being debate at the time about the kneeling protests that started in 2016.

Trump is currently in his first term in office. he instead arranged for an Eagles fan group to attend because he was extremely critical of players who kneed during the national anthem.

The tradition of visiting the White House after winning a championship dates back to the 19th century, but some have used it in recent years to make a statement.

After Stephen Curry, the two-time NBA champion, declared he did not want to go, the Golden State Warriors were turned down by Trump following their 2017 triumph.

Roadside bomb blast kills 26 in Nigeria’s restive northeast

In Nigeria’s restive northeast, at least 26 people were killed when a truck struck an improvised explosive device.

According to the military and residents of Borno State, close to the Cameroon border, the blast on Monday claimed the lives of men, women, and children. Violence has risen in recent days in the area, with Boko Haram and the ISIL affiliate in West Africa Province (ISWAP) serving as armed groups that have plagued the area for decades.

A military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity told the AFP news agency that “twenty-six people died in the explosion, which included 16 men, four women, and six children,” adding that three more seriously injured passengers were among those speaking.

No immediate comment was made by Borno State police.

In an internal memo released by the Reuters news agency, the International NGO Safety Organization claimed that vehicles moving between Rann and Gamboru Ngala struck an IED.

According to Akram Saad, a resident of the nearby town Rann, “I took part in the funeral of the 26 people who died in the explosion, most of whom were burned beyond recognition.”

A video captured rows of bodies lying on the morgue at Rann’s general hospital, each covered in white plastic bags.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Boko Haram was the cause of the incident, according to Abba Amma Muhammad, whose mother was killed.

Violence erupts

Northeast Nigeria has experienced the uprising of Boko Haram, which has caused more than 40 000 deaths over the past 15 years. Despite the persistent attacks, the government claims that the groups have been largely defeated.

ISWAP is active in northern Borno, planting landmines along its roads and carrying out sporadic ambushes on trucks.

At least 50 people have been killed in northeast Nigeria as a result of the explosion, which comes as a result of recent violence.

According to sources earlier on Monday, Boko Haram claimed to have killed about 10 “vigilantes” from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Adamawa.

According to a local official, the group in Borno’s Gwoza district murdered 14 farmers on Thursday.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,160

On Tuesday, April 29, 2018, this is how things are going.

Fighting

  • Following a Russian attack on the capital, the Ukrainian military issued a red alert and air defense systems responded with explosions across Kiev.
  • The Ukrainian military reported that 40 of the 166 drones launched by Russia on Monday were shot down by it. Additionally, it claimed that electronic warfare had redirected 74 drones and that four regions had been hit.
  • According to the regional governor, one of those attacks left customers without access to gas in parts of the city of Cherkasy and nearby villages after one of them struck a gas facility in the country’s central Cherkasy region.
  • In remarks made in reference to the killing of senior Russian military officers Yarosalv Moskalik last week, Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised his foreign intelligence service for the “liquidation” of top Russian military figures.
  • 51 Ukrainian drones were destroyed, most of them over Russia’s western Kursk region, according to the Moscow-based Ministry of Defense, less than three hours after being reported late on Monday.
  • According to a military analyst, Russia could have gained additional territory if it made the decision to launch an incursion into Kursk as a result of Ukraine’s decision. According to Christopher McCallion, a fellow at Defense Priorities, a think tank based in Washington, DC, “essentially traded territory it values the most – its own – for territory it didn’t value and that it couldn’t hold for forever.”

Russia declares a unilateral truce.

  • On May 8 through May 10, Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, struck a three-day ceasefire in his conflict with Ukraine to commemorate the Soviet Union’s and its allies’ victories in World War II.
  • Zelenskyy demanded a “full and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days” to provide “a basis for real diplomacy,” and that the world didn’t want to wait until May 8 for a truce.
  • Putin and Zelenskyy must step up to the table of negotiations, according to the White House, and Trump, the president of the United States, wants a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
  • The Trump administration’s failure to fulfill its promise to end the Ukraine war “shortly” after taking office came as it was approaching its 100th day in power.
  • Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, stated in an interview on Monday that he had told the US to “increase pressure on Russia” and that he had told them to “increase pressure on Russia” over the next ten days. According to Macron, implementing a ceasefire in Ukraine would take “crucial” measures over the next 15 days.

Politics and diplomacy

  • According to Zelenskyy, a mineral deal with the US has “become stronger, more equitable” after the initial discussions, while Kyiv’s ministry of foreign affairs stated that the country was attempting to close any deal as soon as possible.
  • After the US suspended its support for the organization, the UN refugee agency cut some programs to help Ukrainians flee the front lines.
  • Berlin’s new government predicted a bigger role for the alliance as it considers its future. You can count on us, according to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a significant threat during a ceremony held at NATO’s Brussels headquarters.
  • A draft document released ahead of an EU-UK summit next month suggested the United Kingdom put forward a broad statement of shared values with the European Union that emphasizes support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the Paris Climate Agreement, and free trade.
  • Elon Musk’s Starlink launched its first batch of Project Kuiper internet satellites, and Amazon launched a rival service. It replaces Starlink, which has been crucial to Kyiv’s war effort and where Musk has previously threatened to end Ukraine’s access due to the development.

Hollywood legend and ardent supporter of Arsenal Anne Hathaway?

The actress, who has appeared in movies like The Devil Wears Prada and The Dark Knight Rises, has recently begun to show signs of self-aggrandize in TikTok videos of herself singing North London Forever.

However, it appears that Mikel Arteta’s entire Hathaway family is in charge of the group conversation. In one video, Hathaway declares, “The group chat is going off. I concur, “Declan is the man of the day,” my mother.

Has Hathaway been a fan of Arsenal for how long?

Although it’s not clear how long Hathaway’s love of the Gunners has been lasting, there is certainly evidence that it has for more than a year.

She was spotted watching and celebrating a goal last April while speaking in a conversation for her upcoming film, The Idea of You, alongside fellow Arsenal fan Nicholas Galitzine.

“One-nil, Trossard”! Galitzine responds, “Oh I love you,” before Hathaway adds, “Sorry, we both support the same team, and there is a game in progress right now, and they scored in our previous interview.”

Leandro Trossard’s goal, which they celebrated with a 2-0 victory over Wolves on April 20, 2024, was the one they were celebrating.

Has Hathaway attended an Arsenal game?

It appears that Hathaway hasn’t been able to make the trip to Arsenal’s home yet despite Trossard’s invitation to attend Emirates Stadium a year ago.

There is actually little evidence on the internet that she is a fan before the casual revelations about her Arsenal support in the aforementioned interview last April.

However, her support seems to have increased as a result of Arsenal’s Champions League campaign.

Other Hollywood football fans range from Crowe to Hanks.

Hathaway is, of course, not the only Hollywood star supporting the English football team.

A major Leeds supporter and club owner, Russell Crowe of Gladiator fame.

The Australian stated last year that he has followed Leeds since the 1970s, stating that “every day there was either a gardening show, a yoga show, or Match of the Day.”

“So we tuned in and watched Match of the Day, and Leeds had a lot of success in the early 1970s.”

“My brother chose Liverpool and I chose Leeds because they were on the TV quite a lot,” he said.

Tom Hanks, a fellow actor, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, a star of Ocean’s Twelve and other movies, both support their hometown team Swansea City, while Tom Hanks, a fellow actor, has been seen at their games.
