As she opens up about her own romantic life and why she’s had a “quiet” year, musical star Dana Vickers admits that the dating industry is a total “minefield” right now.

Searching for The One isn’t an easy task, and from online dating faux pas to relationship horror stories, Diana Vickers has seen it all. But the singer and stage star, 33, who tells OK! she’s feeling a tad sunburnt and worn out after a weekend at Glastonbury, says she’s not given up on love.

Diana laughs, “Dating in general is difficult; it’s a minefield.” Because last year I really put myself out there and had seen a few people, I didn’t go on a date this year for about five months. I then gave it a rest and recently went on my first nerve-wracking date in a while. You just have to put yourself out there, though, because I do really want to meet people.

It’s soon clear that Diana is a pretty open book as she talks frankly about sex, love, friendships and everything in between. And while it may seem like she’s oozing confidence in all areas, the former X Factor star admits that’s not always the case when it comes to dating.

You’re asking, “Do they like me? ” while you’re second-guessing and thinking. Do they like me in the same way that I do? You want to be open and honest, but you’re trying to play it cool.

“I always feel anxious,” he continued. “Especially now, I’m anxious about having sex.” It’s more overwhelming to think about now that I’ve been celibate for a year. Once you get started, Diana says, “It’s brilliant and fantastic and that’s what it’s all about,” but it’s also very revealing.

On her new podcast, Just Between Us, the Blackburn native will collaborate with co-host Alice Giddings to document her dating experiences. Listeners with relationship issues receive calls for the podcast, which Diana and Alice assist in resolving.

, Metro,
In a new podcast, Diana and journalist Alice Gidding examine the contemporary dating landscape.

It’s confusing and difficult for a woman in her 30s to date. So the podcast is just a nice, secure place to listen to other people’s stories and hear similar things,” she says.

“But it also makes it very liberating for me because it allows me to let it out.” However, I believe I’m being quite polite when discussing people I’ve dated, and the right person will accept it. I’ve come to terms with who I am and how unapologetically self-centered I am.

But that hasn’t come easily for Diana, who admits she’s done her fair share of work to get to where she is now. The star was catapulted to overnight fame, aged just 16, when she took part in The X Factor, during which she was mentored by Cheryl Cole and placed fourth.

Diana acknowledges that early success comes with challenges, and that she is “a tough cookie.” I’m extremely fortunate that I was already a teenager.

It’s difficult because you are growing up and finding your feet. It’s difficult to compare yourself to other people who constantly take on the jobs you might have desired because of how unfair you are. I make sure I have people who are really good, optimistic, loving, and grounded to work with now.

If Diana could give her younger self any advice, would she have any tips? She laughs, “Babe, hold on, this is going to be a really rough little ride.” You’re going to experience a lot of highs and lows, but just keep believing in yourself and everything will work out.

Alongside her new podcast venture, Diana is co-host of another podcast with best pal Chiara Hunter – Ki & Dee: The Podcast. She also joined Lee Mack in an episode of Not Going Out recently, after a stint in the West End portraying Gwyneth Paltrow in I Wish You Well – a musical comedy about the star’s infamous skiing accident of 2016.

After her years in showbiz, Diana says it’s only now, in her thirties, that she truly feels grounded. “I feel so much more confident in myself, so much more self- assured and I’m just loving it. I have a voice and I love my friends. I’ve made such a nice world for myself. I wouldn’t change where I am right now at all,” she says, smiling.

“Right now I’m having a really good time. I feel really lucky, but it hasn’t always been like this and I’m sure there’ll be another time where something might happen. Like Ronan Keating sang, Life is a roller coaster/Just got to ride it. I listen to that song when I’m feeling down and it always helps.”
