What to know about Trump’s talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders

On Monday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top European leaders met at the White House to discuss Russia’s plans to end its conflict in Ukraine.

Following last week’s three-hour summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where Putin urged Ukraine to give up its easternmost territory in exchange for freezing the front lines elsewhere, and Putin also rejected the idea of a ceasefire before reaching a comprehensive peace agreement.

The US president even praised his counterpart’s suit, which made for a significantly warmer environment than during their tense exchange at the White House in February.

What are the main lessons learned?

Trump claims that the US will provide “very good protection” to Ukraine.

Trump stated that as part of a deal to end Russia’s war with Ukraine, the US would support Europe.

There will be a lot of assistance, according to Trump, who referred to Europe as the “first line of defense” as the “first line of defense.”

Trump continued, “We have people waiting in another room, and right now, they’re all from Europe.” The “biggest people in Europe.” They also desire protection. We’ll support them in that regard because they feel so strongly about it.

Trump added that regardless of the outcome of the discussions, the US would continue to support Ukraine.

The road never comes to an end, they say. We want to stop the killing of people. Therefore, I wouldn’t consider it to be the road’s end. He said, “I believe we have a good chance of doing it.”

Zelenskyy praised the pledge as “a significant step forward.”

Later, he claimed that Ukraine had offered to purchase US weapons worth about $90 billion.

If it’s safe, Zelenskyy claims he’s open to elections in Ukraine.

Elections backed by Zelenskyy, provided they are conducted in a secure environment.

“Yes, of course.” We are willing to work in the parliament because elections are not possible during the war, but security is, Zelenskyy said.

He continued, “We need a truce to allow people to conduct democratic, open, legal, and legal elections.”

Trump claims a ceasefire is unnecessary.

When Trump said a ceasefire might not be necessary in response to a question posed last week about his commitment to “severe consequences” for Russia if the war did not end.

Trump responded, “I don’t believe a ceasefire is necessary.”

“You see, the six deals I resolved this year were all at war,” I said. I avoided engaging in ceasefires. And while I am aware that it might be beneficial, he added that he can see why one nation might not want it, either way.

However, Trump continued, “We can work out a deal where we’re working on a peace deal while they’re fighting.”

They must battle, they say. I’d like to see them go.

Trump has credited him with bringing the end to six wars, including those involving Cambodia and Thailand and India and Pakistan.

The Ukrainian leader responded, “everything,” when asked what assurances Trump would need from him to agree to a deal.

It has two parts, it says. I started talking about the strong Ukrainian army with your coworkers, and it’s a lot of intelligence, people, training, and weapons,” Zelenskyy said.

Trump and European leaders sat down.

Trump met with Zelenskyy’s first meeting, and he also had a multilateral meeting with leaders from the EU, including EU President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The US president praised their efforts to meet with them at the White House, saying they were united in their effort to end Russia’s occupation of Ukraine.

Trump remarked, “We’ve had a very successful day so far, and significant discussions as we work to put an end to the killing and end the Ukrainian war.”

Trump wants a summit with Putin and Zelenskyy.

After the discussions ended, he called President Putin and set up a meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy, he wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to provide security guarantees.

Trump said, “We’re going to be taking that into account at the table because this is one of the most important things to think about.”

He expressed hope that a deal could be reached to stop Ukraine from starting another war.

Ukraine will likely participate in the Putin-Zelenskyy discussions.

Trump added that potential territorial exchange should be the subject of the discussions.

In the end, President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people must decide this, according to Trump, who also must work with President Putin.

According to open-source estimates, Russia controls roughly one-fifth of Ukraine. Ukraine, which seized a sizable portion of Kursk, Russia’s Kursk region last year as a surprise counteroffensive, is not currently thought to be in Russian possession.

Trump continued, “I’m anticipating Putin to soon release Ukrainian prisoners.”

On August 18, 2025, at the White House in Washington, DC, Volodymyr Zelenskyy meets with US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Positions are laid out by European leaders.

Trump praised Trump for “broken the deadlock,” saying that the top priority must be stopping the killings and the destruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure.

  • According to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, the priority must be “a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” adding that “everyone’s child must go back to their families.” This is in reference to the forced reinstallation of Ukrainian children in Russia and Belarus.
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged allies to “work on that and try to put pressure on Russia” and said he “can’t imagine that the next meeting would take place without a ceasefire.
  • Security guarantees and “how to be sure that it won’t happen again,” according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, are two of the most crucial issues, according to the Italian Prime Minister. This is a prerequisite for all kinds of peace.
  • The idea of a trilateral meeting is “very important because this is the only way to fix it,” according to French President Emmanuel Macron, who said a “robust and long-lasting peace” is necessary. He added that “boots on the ground” are necessary to bring about peace.
The discussions focused on “the security of Europe and the United Kingdom as well,” according to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which is why this is such a crucial issue.

  • The event itself, according to Finnish President Alexander Stubb, was “symbolic,” meaning that Team Europe and Team America were assisting Ukraine. He continued, “We found a solution in 1944, and I’m sure that we’ll be able to find a solution in 2025 to end Russia’s war of aggression, find and get a lasting, just peace,” noting Finland’s long border with Russia.

What comes next?

According to President Antonio Costa, European Council leaders will conduct a video call tomorrow to review the discussions from Monday.
