What are the risks of violence in the eastern DRC spreading regionally?
Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in eastern DRC, is now under the control of M23 rebels.
The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has seen steady progress from Rwanda-backed rebels, who have seize towns and villages and obstruct residents from leaving their homes since they last appeared just over three years ago.
M23 is just one of the country’s hundreds of rebel groups that have spent years fighting the army.
However, the most recent upheaval may signal a significant shift that will have significant effects on regional stability.
So, does diplomacy stand a chance to defuse the escalating tensions?
