Cardiff Principality Stadium Date: Saturday, November Kick-off: 15:10 GMT
Joe Hawkins has switched from being an international exile in Exeter to supporting Wales’ attempt to adjust to life without their English-based contingent.
Steve Tandy’s men kick off their autumn campaign against South Africa, who are currently the world champions, on Saturday in Cardiff.
With a full squad, a game against the Springboks would be difficult enough, but Wales will have to make significant changes to the 23 that produced spirited performances in New Zealand’s 52-26 defeat.
Due to the money-raising event being held outside World Rugby’s authorized Test window, Tandy is without Adam Beard from Montpellier, along with 12 other players who have re-signed to English clubs.
Hawkins is confident that the deputies can step up after earning his first cap against the All Blacks in his first two years playing for the Scarlets.
The center or fly-half said, “You always have to be ready, and a chance can always come sooner sometimes because of injuries.”
When he replaces Ben Thomas in the starting lineup, Hawkins will attempt to improve his performance against New Zealand.
The 23-year-old won his first cap since 2023 after being deemed ineligible for international rugby under the Welsh Rugby Union’s selection policy because he did not have enough caps.
He said, “I couldn’t have picked a better one to come back in than the All Blacks and facing the haka,” and it was classy to be back there.
“I probably enjoyed it more with Wales this time around because I’m aware of how much I miss it when I go without.”

Wales must maintain its composure on Saturday when they face a South African side that is world champions, first in the world, first in the rugby championship, and has just come off victories against Japan, France, Italy, and Ireland.
Everyone has seen that South Africa has historically been physically tough and powerful over rivals, Hawkins said.
However, it appears that over the past few years, they have given their game a little more attacking flair.
You must take precautions because you must stop them right away, but you must also be concerned about the dangers they have posed.
