After declaring he wanted to fight Deontay Wilder next, Oleksandr Usyk has been given the opportunity to defend his WBC heavyweight title on his own.

This week, Unified Heavyweight Champion Usyk stated that Wilder would be his “first choice” for the following fight.

Due to the fact that Wilder is not among the top 10 wrestlers in the WBA, WBC, or IBF, Usyk may have to resign from his positions in order to fight him.

However, the WBC made the announcement at their annual convention that they would not immediately require the Ukrainian to defend their belt, allowing the pair to compete for the WBC world titles.

Usyk last faced Daniel Dubois in a fight in July, when he defeated him in the fifth round to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.

However, the 38-year-old made the decision to drop out of the WBO and make Fabio Wardley the world heavyweight champion.

Usyk made the announcement to the WBO that he would not file a title defense against Wardley at the time.

Usyk continues to be the heavyweight champion of WBC, IBF, and WBA.

The next mandatory challenger for the WBC belt would be determined by a potential fight between British boxers Lawrence Okolie and Moses Itauma, according to the WBC.

Both fighters have scheduled fights in mind, with Itauma taking on Jermaine Franklin on January 24 in Manchester and Okolie boxing against a pending opponent in Nigeria later this month.

A potential fight between Joshua Buatsi and Ben Whittaker could determine the next mandatory challenger at light heavyweight for several other Britons next year.

Conor Benn, a British boxer, was also named as Mario Barrios’ top WBC welterweight champion.

Terrence Crawford is denied his super-middleweight belt by the WBC, alleging that the American has not paid his previous two sanctioning fines.
