The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has withdrawn its proposed protest against the telecommunications tariff increase of 50%.
The union’s meeting with the Federal government delegation led by George Akume, the secretary to the Federation’s government, took place on Monday.
The meeting was held in the SGF’s office to maintain industrial harmony and protect Nigerians’ interests, according to a statement signed by the Director, Information &, Public Relations, Seguin Imohiosen.

According to him, Mohammed Idris, the minister of information and national orientation, who spoke on behalf of the federal government, the meeting’s purpose was to examine the study conducted by the NCC that resulted in the 50 percent increase in the telecommunications tariff.
After much discussion, the two organizations decided to form a 10-man committee made up of members from the Federal Government and the NLC to review the study and prepare its report in two weeks.
“The committee of five members of the federal government, in essence, and the Nigerian Labour Congress in particular have set up a committee.” For the next two weeks, we will continue to meet here. And we will make a recommendation that we will give the organized Labour and the government final consideration at the end of the second week, he said.
Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NLC president, stated that the union will decide its next course of action after the Committee’s report is released.
Present at the meeting were Minister Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijanni, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
In protest of the recently approved 50% telecom tariff increase, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had announced on Wednesday last week that it would hold a nationwide mass rally on February 4, 2025.
