More than 19, 000 cases of acute watery diarrhoea have been reported in the past two weeks, according to an OCHA statement on Thursday, along with over 200 cases of acute jaundice syndrome and bloody diarrhoea.
The organization added that “these outbreaks are directly related to the lack of clean water and sanitation in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need for fuel, medical supplies, and water, sanitation, and hygiene items to prevent further collapse of the public health system.”
The desalination plants and water system in Gaza have been rendered useless by Israel’s blockade of fuel entry.
Gaza has been completely destroyed by the Israeli military, almost entirely displaced, and placed under suffocating siege. In addition to the dire humanitarian conditions, Israeli forces continue to kill dozens of Palestinians every day in Gaza.
The Israeli campaign was referred to as a genocide by leading human rights organizations and UN experts.
After a strike on Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, OCHA reported on Thursday that more than 20 people had died and about 70 had been hurt.
At least 71 people were killed in the Israeli attacks on Thursday, according to medical sources told Al Jazeera Arabic.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 56, 259 people have died and 132, 458 have been wounded since Israel’s war on Gaza started in October 2023.
The Israeli government announced in May that it would allow aid to re-enter the enclave following a more than two-month blockade of essential goods entering Gaza.
However, aid entering has been slowed down due to Israeli restrictions, with aid organizations calling it a “drop in the ocean.”
The United States and the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which have been criticized by aid organizations as a “weaponization” of humanitarian goods, have provided the majority of the aid that has been provided.
In a video message on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister, Israel Katz, announced that the army was being asked to create a new aid delivery strategy for Gaza after masked men were seen on top of aid trucks in northern Gaza.
Palestinian clan leaders without affiliation with Hamas claim that the masked men were preventing the truck from being looted, despite Israel’s claim that they were Hamas members.
