Uncertainty ruled over Udo Kier’s film career. Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula were a result of a chance meeting with director Paul Morrissey on a plane.

Udo Kier, the prolific German actor whose career bridged underground art films and Hollywood blockbusters, has died at the age of 81, according to Variety.

One of the most distinctive filmographies in contemporary cinema was created by Kier, who is renowned for his haunting appearance, distinctive voice, and ability to effortlessly transition between genres.

In 1944, a bombing raid in Cologne gave birth to Kier. He recalled how his mother protected him in the rubble in a terrifying account shared during a phone interview years ago.

Kier’s path to the camera was erratic. Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974), both produced by Andy Warhol, were a result of a chance meeting with director Paul Morrissey on a plane. These extravagant and bizarre performances became defining moments in his early career.
