
Nigeria lost to Canada in their opening match of the U-17 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, ending the tournament on a bad note.  ,
Third-place finish for the Flamingos in 2022 was expected to give the Canadians a run for their money.
However, after Gabriela Istocki scored the winning goal, Molly Hale superbly scored, the girls of Coach Bankole Olowookere’s girls trailed just two minutes into the game.
In the Group D game at the Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 1) in Salé, Morocco, Queen Joseph bundled the ball home after twenty-eight minutes to give Nigeria the lead.
At the conclusion of the first half, the match was level.
The second half came back to an end that looked certain to be thrilling for both teams as they attempted to score a second goal.
However, Nigeria capitulated defensively as the North Americans scored three goals in thirteen minutes.

The Canadians were given the upper hand again with a 73rd-minute strike from Melisa Kekic.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper Boniface spilled the ball as the Flamingoes searched for an equaliser before Julia Amireh latched onto it to make it 3-1 for Jen Herst’s side in the 80th minute.
In their first game of the 2025 U-17 Women’s World Cup, Amireh completed a swift counterattack and led the Flamingos to victory.

With three points, Canada now leads France in Group D, while Nigeria is firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.
The Flamingos will play France on Wednesday before hosting Samoa on Saturday.
