TV presenter Patricia Fuenmayor dies aged 51 after tragic battle with cancer

Venezuelan news reporter Patricia Fuenmayor has died aged 51 after being diagnosed with cancer. The TV presenter was previously crowned Miss South America and was a regular face on the programme Despierta America as its New York correspondent.

The programme announced Patricia’s death in an Instagram post, revealing that she died yesterday. She is survived by her husband Jorge Safar Perez and their two children.

Sharing the news in an Instagram post, Despierta America said: “We deeply regret the passing of Patricia Fuenmayor, our colleague and correspondent in New York. May she rest in peace.”

Announcing the sad news on the channel, host Raúl Gonzálezas said: “This is news we don’t like to share. The Despierta América family has suffered a great loss. Our friend and colleague Patricia Fuenmayor passed away early this morning after a tough battle with cancer.

“A passionate, professional woman, always dedicated to her reporting. Thank you, Patricia, for your light, your dedication, and your smile. We will always remember you.”

Patricia’s colleagues also paid tribute to the star, with Elyangelica Gonzalez writing on Instagram: “What a great pain Patricia! May God receive you in his holy glory, give strength to your family and comfort your beloved children. The sky today is much prettier with your arrival.”

Meanwhile, Astrid Rivera wrote: “Good colleague, tremendous journalist, and excellent woman and mother. Rest in Peace beautiful. We will miss you as a team work and the world will miss a beautiful woman like you.”

Patricia competed in a number of pageants at the start of her career, becoming a finalist in 1997 Miss Venezuela before being crowned Miss South America the following year.

She went onto marry surgeon Jorge, however the family was forced to flee South America after he was kidnapped in Venezuela.

They moved to the United States, where she began working as a correspondent for Edición Digital.

Patricia’s final post on social media was to mark Valentine’s Day on Instagram. Sharing photos of her kissing her husband, Patricia wrote: “The kiss of my life!! I love you.”

Fans have flooded Patricia’s Instagram page since the news of her death broke, with one writing: “I can’t believe it.” Another posted: “Rest in peace, beloved Patty.”
