Elon Musk’s launching of a new political party has become “ridiculous,” according to Donald Trump, the president’s former ally, furthering the Republican party’s ongoing conflict with him.
The world’s richest man and Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was cutting costs, had a close relationship, but they had a difficult feud over the president’s “big beautiful” tax and spending mega-bill.
Trump, who was returning from his New Jersey golf club to Washington, DC, declared to reporters on Sunday, “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party.”
“Starting a third party just adds to confusion,” according to the statement from the two-party system. Third parties have never succeeded. I think it’s ridiculous, he said, so he can enjoy it.
Musk, who was born in South Africa, made the announcement on Saturday that he would form the America Party to challenge the country’s “one-party system.”
Musk, a Tesla tycoon and SpaceX executive, claims that the president’s massive domestic spending plan will cause the US debt to balloon and that he will do everything in his power to overthrow the majority of lawmakers.
When it came to domestic spending, the former DOGE head, who spearheaded a massive effort to reduce federal spending and reduce employment, compared Trump’s Republicans to Democratic challengers.
We live in a one-party system, not a democracy, according to Musk, who owns X, the social media platform he owns.
Musk provided few details about his plan, and it was unclear whether he had registered the party with US electoral officials. However, it might cause problems for Republicans in the midterm elections of 2026 and beyond.
“TRAIN WRECK”
While he was on Air Force One, he took to his Truth Social network to redouble his assault on Musk as a sign of how sensitive the subject could be for Trump.
Elon Musk has basically become a TRAIN WRECK in the past five weeks, according to Trump in a statement.
“We have enough of the Radical Left Democrats’ support for the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION andamp; CHAOS,” according to the statement from Third Parties.
Trump made a long diatribe in which he asserted that Tesla’s ownership of Tesla, combined with the spending bill’s reduction of subsidies for such vehicles, had caused him to become hostile toward the president.
Musk has argued that the bill’s increased US fiscal deficit and sovereign debt is primarily to blame.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also criticized Musk’s attempts to enter the political fray earlier on Sunday, telling him to keep running his businesses.
Bessent criticized Trump administration when asked by CNN if Musk’s plan irritated the Trump administration.
Bessent said, “I think the boards of directors at his various companies wanted him to come back and run those businesses, which he excels at running.”
“I expect that those boards of directors did not like yesterday’s announcement and will encourage him to concentrate on his business, not his political, endeavors.”
Musk left DOGE in May to concentrate on his corporate responsibilities, Tesla’s sales and reputation suffering in particular as a result of his brief entry into Trump’s inner circle.
In a bizarre ceremony where Musk appeared with a black eye and received a golden key to the White House from the president, Trump gave him a grand sendoff in the Oval Office.
After Musk had criticized Trump’s flagship spending bill, the two were immediately engaged in bitter verbal abuse on social media.
