A transgender woman’s executive order prohibits them from competing in any other gender-specific sports, according to US President Donald Trump’s signature.
The order provides guidance, regulations and legal interpretations, and it will enlist the Department of Education to investigate high schools thought to be non-compliant.
Republicans claim that it restores equality to sports, but LGBT rights and advocacy groups have called it discriminatory.
Swimming, athletics, and golf are some of the sports governing bodies that forbid transgender women from competing in the elite category at the elite level if they have reached puberty.
This most recent order, according to White House officials who briefed reporters on Wednesday morning, gives the Department of Education the authority to look into how schools implement Title IX, a US law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs.
The Biden administration’s position will be reversed by the executive order, which in April last year stated that LGBT students would be protected by federal law, but it did not specifically address transgender athletes.
You will face federal scrutiny for violating Title IX and risk losing money if you let men invade women’s sports teams or enter your locker rooms, according to Trump.
Additionally, the White House intends to arrange for national athletics organizations, such as the NCAA, to meet with female athletes and their parents to discuss issues.
The US would do everything in its power to stop transgender athletes from competing against women in international Olympic Committee competitions that take place on US soil, according to the official who spoke about the order.
The 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles were included in the order, according to President Trump.
He has stated that he will refuse visas to transgender Olympic athletes who want to compete in the US.
Trump stated before signing the executive order that “the war on women’s sports is over,” adding that “my administration will not stand by and watch men beat and batter female athletes” during the LA Games.
He stated that he would direct the secretary of homeland security to “reject any and all visa applications made by men who knowingly enter the country by posing as women athletes.”
IOC has been approached for comment.
White House officials described the policies as being broadly popular with Americans, and critical to ensuring “fairness” for women in sports, as well as safety.
The order “exposes young people to harassment and discrimination,” according to Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson in a statement. “It encourages people to question the gender of children who don’t fit a narrow view of how they’re supposed to dress or look.”
“For so many students, sports are about finding somewhere to belong”, Ms Robinson added. “Not partisan policies that make their lives harder.”
Less than 1% of the population over the age of 13 in the US are transgender, according to a study by the UCLA Williams Institute, and the number playing sports is smaller.
