Significant leadership changes have been made at several federal universities, including Yakubu Gowon University, the University of Abuja, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to a statement by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, these changes are effective immediately.
Onanuga at Yakubu Gowon University noted that Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi’s duties as Vice-Chancellor were removed after President Tinubu disbanded the entire governing council.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University. Senator Joy Emordi, the current Alvan Ikoku University of Education pro-chancellor, will succeed him in Makurdi.
President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Yakubu Gowon University’s acting vice Chancellor for a six-month term in place of Maikudi. When the substantive vice Chancellor position becomes available, she will not be able to apply.
Before his term ends on February 14, President Tinubu has also removed Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

For the first six months, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam will not be able to apply for the permanent position.
The leadership changes at UNN extend to the role of Pro-Chancellor, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo. Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been named UNN’s new Pro-Chancellor, according to President Tinubu. Ojo previously held the same position at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti and the Federal University of Lokoja.
Ojo will succeed Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi at the Federal University of Lokoja, who is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.
Senator Joy Emordi succeeds Senator Sani Stores as the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Additionally, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
Onanuga once more stated that all decisions regarding appointments and reassignments take effect right away.
He added that Tinubu emphasised that these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.
