After defeating heavyweight Danielle Perkins on February 3 in Michigan, American Claressa Shields’ victory on February 3d, 2015, revealed that she had tested positive for marijuana.

The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission has given the 29-year-old, who is the undisputed champion of three-weight, a state ban from state combat.

Shields received an “oral fluid sample” following the fight, and Shields came back positive.

Marijuana is banned in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

After a positive marijuana test resulted in a positive drug test, American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was given a one-month ban and was then exempt from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The Michigan Commission has opened its own investigation into whether Shields should face disciplinary action, while the WBO, which is a sanctioning body and does not have the authority to suspend boxers, has requested a “show notice” from Shields.

The Michigan Commission alleged that Ms. Shields’ behavior as a licensed professional boxer poses an immediate threat to the safety, integrity, and public interest of professional boxing.

Last week, Shields addressed rumours of a failed drugs test on social media, saying she was a “clean athlete”.

Shields has been contacted by BBC Sport for comment.

Shields and Perkins would have been subject to drug testing by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (Vada) as part of the WBC’s clean boxing program.

Shields, a professional boxer, won gold at the age of 17 and has numerous titles won.
