Jeeno Thitikul, the reigning world no. 1, extended her lead by six shots to set a 54-hole tournament record at the CME Group Tour Championship.
In her third round, Thailand’s Thitikul shot an eight-under-par 64 to finish 22nd overall.
Thitikul, 22, who won this title last year at age 22 under, said, “It has been pretty good.”
Because I am aware that there are a lot of players who will be able to make some more birdies, I was just trying to focus on myself and try to make birdies and birdies and birdies.
Pajaree Anannarukarn, Thitikul’s compatriot, and Nelly Korda, the second-ranked player, both shot 65 on Saturday for a total of 69.
At halfway through, Thitikul, who had three strokes to go, bogeyed her first hole on Saturday.
But then she birdied the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth holes, and followed up with four birdies from the eleventh to the fifteenth in a row, including one on the 17th.
With a victory, Thitikul would become the second woman to win the tournament in a row, after South Koreans Ko Jin-young in 2020 and 2021.
