Special Counsel Who Led Trump Prosecutions Leaves US Justice Dept
The US Department of Justice has been replaced by Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed to look into Donald Trump’s alleged bid to overturn the election’s outcome, according to a court filing on Saturday.
According to officials, “The Special Counsel finished his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and left the Department on January 10,” according to the letter from US District Judge Aileen Cannon to urge her not to extend her ruling last week, which prevented Smith’s release.”
As she considers whether to keep a hold on the special counsel’s report on two cases, Trump’s role in the US Capitol in the case of Joe Biden’s resignation from office, and the withholding of classified documents after he left the White House, Smith mentioned in the filing to Cannon.
The lengthy legal battle over the report on Trump-related cases is coming down to about a week before he is formally proclaimed as America’s 47th president on January 20 as his successor, with Cannon considering an extension and the hold expected to expire in the upcoming days.

Trump made the suggestion that Smith had been “fired” by the Department of Justice in a late-night post on his Truth Social platform.
“He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100, 000, 000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed”! he wrote.
A mob of the Republican leader’s supporters violently attacked Trump on January 6 after Smith accused him of conspiring to defraud the United States and conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding, which was scheduled to recognize Biden’s victory.
Smith dropped the cases against Trump after he won November’s presidential election.
The Justice Department announced this week that Garland plans to make the findings public after the special counsel’s confidential report was submitted to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on January 7.
According to department officials, Cannon does not have the authority to appoint Smith’s attorney general to release the report.
