Segun Sowunmi, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) chief, urges the APC-controlled Federal Government to abandon any plans to declare a state of emergency in Osun State.
On Wednesday, Sowunmi said on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, “It was rumoured that some people are deceiving themselves to declare a state of emergency in Osun.”
“For what and why? Even with all the shenanigans of Chibok and all of that, (Ex-President Goodluck) Jonathan did not declare a state of emergency while the Vice President (Kashim Shettima) was governor of Borno.
Ajibola Basiru, the state’s APC national secretary, requested on Monday that the state of emergency be declared in Osun as a result of the state’s local government crisis.
However, Sowunmi asked the government to perish such thoughts. He added that the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently in power, should abandon the notion that the opposition could be silenced to create a one-party system in Nigeria.
A state of emergency is defined as a situation of national danger or disaster in which a government suspends routine constitutional procedures to regain control, according to Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. The President has the right to make any necessary rules in an emergency to protect public order and safety.
Since Monday, when APC and PDP members clashed in Osun State over local government council control, at least six people have been confirmed dead.
The state governor, Ademola Adeleke, warned the APC members, who are supported by security forces, on Sunday that they wanted to break into the state’s council secretariats.
The governor, who belongs to the PDP, had also asked President Bola Tinubu to caution one of his ministers, Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, over the impending clash.
When Adeleke raised the alarm, Sowunmi claimed Tinubu should have intervened and provided Osun with the necessary security. Adeleke cannot be bullied by the APC-led administration at the center, according to the PDP leader, adding that the opposition won’t accept a forced repression of all opposition parties.
He said, “The governor was screaming that things were not looking normal. Please call Oyetola to order, but the next thing we see is brigandage.
As the state’s chief security officer, “every reasonable thing should have been given to him when he raised the alarm to prevent this kind of bloodbath.”
The president should have clarified to them that they aren’t sure if strong-arm politics will start or break out and that I haven’t sent anyone on my behalf playing God about a tomorrow.
Because it can never be a one-party state, I don’t like those who claim the country will one day become one.
