South Africa 362-6: Markram 110 (98), Arshdeep 2-54
South Africa won by four wickets.
With a score of 359, South Africa won by four wickets in Naya Raipur, marking the joint-highest chase in Indian one-day international history.
As the tourists beat India with four balls to spare, Aiden Markram hit 110 from the top of the order, while Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis both made half-centuries.
After closing the three-match series with a score of 358-6, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad were unable to defend their scores as South Africa completed the format’s joint sixth highest chase with a score of 1-1.
India suffered a 20th straight toss defeat against KL Rahul’s side, but Kohli and Gaikwad put on 195 for the third wicket, which gave them confidence in the victory.
With 135 in his opening game of the series, Gaikwad’s 105, his first three-figure score in 50-over internationals, added to Kohli’s lead at the top of the ODI century scoring charts.
After Rahul’s unbeaten 66, Gaikwad was caught off Marco Jansen by Tony de Zorzi, while Markram of Lungi Ngidi took Kohli for 102.
Washington Sundar intercepted Quinton de Kock for eight in the fifth over of their reply, but Markam put together partnerships of 101 with Temba Bavuma (46), and 70 with Breetzke (68).
At the end of Harshit Rana’s 30th over, Markram was caught by Gaikward, but Brevis made a 34-ball 54-ball ball at the crease.
Before Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep dismissed Breetzke and Marco Jansen in the space of five balls, the 22-year-old hit Kuldeep Yadav to Yashasvi Jaiswal and was dismissed.
However, Corbin Bosch held on to his side’s nerves by delivering an unbeaten 29 from 15 balls, including the match-winning four, to earn the victory.
Before a five-match T20 series, the series wraps up in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
