In 2010, Simon Cowell was instrumental in putting together One Direction for the X Factor, and he also was instrumental in helping Liam Payne become a rock star in the boy band.

Simon Cowell has opened up about Liam Payne’s death, revealing how hard it hit him. The music mogul was key to launching Liam’s career, as he formed One Direction on the X Factor in 2010.

Liam died in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. The singer was beloved worldwide for being part of the boy band One Direction. The group, which also included Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, was put together by Simon after each boy auditioned solo on music talent show X Factor fifteen years ago.

The band split after five years of being together. They quickly gained acclaim and were compared to The Beatles because of how quickly they gained notoriety.

Now, a year after Liam died, Simon, who signed the group to his label and helped launch their careers, has opened up about the death. Talking to Rolling Stone, he said that he wished he “could turn back the clock”.

You ask yourself, “Could I have done more?” Without his involvement in the band, what would have happened to Liam? ‘”, Simon shared. When I spoke with his mother and father recently, they kept telling me that he was extremely proud of what he had accomplished. Of course, I would like to turn the clock back.

He continued, “I saw Liam a year before his passing.” The singer and Liam’s son, Bear, were talking at the singer’s home when he visited. Simon shared that he instructed Liam to avoid letting music “ruin” his life. He claimed that after speaking with him, he realized Liam was “really good”.

Simon addressed the blame that some people felt after Liam’s death elsewhere in the interview. Some claimed that Liam would have been better off if Simon hadn’t orchestrated the band or if the band had had better support. According to the star’s toxicology report, his body contained alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants at the time of his death.

Simon asserted his innocence in Liam’s death. Ten years after signing someone, the idea that you are essentially in charge of their life? That is impossible for you. He added that he made the decision to ignore comments that criticize him and Liam because it would be “torture” to read anything that criticizes him.

Liam’s death is still causing a lot of questions. Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz are facing drug-related charges in Argentina as two others are facing drug possession charges. A trial date has not yet been determined, and the pair deny the allegations.

A final inquest is not yet being conducted because the coroner is awaiting an in-depth analysis of the Argentina investigations. Senior Coroner Crispin Butler remarked, “We will continue to work with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to obtain full reports, eyewitness statements, and other relevant evidence to assess in due course the statutory questions at a final inquest, namely who the deceased was, a final medical cause of death, when, where, and how he came by his death.

Ahead of the anniversary of his death, Liam’s bandmate Louis Tomlinson also opened up about losing his friend. Louis said he would “never really accept” that Liam had died. Talking to The Independent, he said he thought he was well versed in grief – as both his mother and sister have died – but that it did not help him get over Liam’s death.
