Following his altercation with Liverpool supporters at Anfield earlier this month, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone received a one-game ban for “unsporting conduct” from Uefa.

In Atletico’s 3-2 defeat, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored a 92nd-minute winner after Simeone appeared to be irked by a small group of away fans.

The Argentine complained to the fourth official about the number of stewards blocking him from the Liverpool supporters.

Before being sent off and walking down the tunnel, Simeone had to be dragged away from the scene and continued to protest.

He will miss his team’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday (20:00 BST), which will be his side’s only competitive Uefa fixture of the season.

The 55-year-old said: “First of all, I regret the part I played,” during the press conference following the Liverpool game. It is obvious that we do not have the authority to react, and that doing so is bad.

Simone objected to the home supporters’ “insults throughout the entire game” despite the fact that he “could not recall exactly” what had happened.

We [managers] are in a position where we are protagonists/standard bearers, so we could fight racism and insults in stadiums today as well as the insults we receive throughout the entire game.

Being in this position and getting insults the entire game is not easy. After the third goal, I watched it from a far away place. The insults continued after the third goal went in, and I turned, but I still have a personality.
