James Remar is the actor who played Richard Wright, Samantha’s boyfriend with a wandering eye in Sex and the City. He is now back on screens in a very different role
Sex and the City fans may need a double-take because Richard Wright, the slick hotel magnate who once broke Samantha Jones’ heart, looks almost unrecognisable in his latest TV transformation.
James Remar, who is now 71, made his mark on SATC history as the only man to truly devastate Samantha after cheating on her. Now he is returning to screens in a very different role.
Two decades after that infamous moment where Samantha caught him in the act in a Vegas hotel room, the actor has swapped the life of a business mogul in Manhattan for chaos in the courtroom in All’s Fair, Kim Kardashian ’s new legal drama that has already become one of the most divisive shows of 2025.
James appears in the series as Theodore Baskin, the emotionally distant husband of Judith Light’s character Sheila, whose marriage implodes after she strays because she feels unloved.
The show itself, which was created by Ryan Murphy and stars a powerhouse cast including Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, Glenn Close and Teyana Taylor, follows a team of elite female divorce lawyers who break away from a male-dominated firm to form their own formidable practice.
Despite its star-studded cast, All’s Fair has received a brutal critical response, as it earned a rare 0 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. But the backlash has only fuelled public curiosity and sent viewing numbers skyrocketing.
Kim referenced those stats by triumphantly asking her 354 million followers: “Have you tuned in to the most critically acclaimed show of the year!?!?!?” while sharing figures showing the series topping Disney+ charts in 28 countries.
James has previously spoken about his exit from Sex and the City, and admitted he was disappointed when Richard Wright’s storyline ended abruptly despite his undeniable chemistry with Samantha.
The actor even told PEOPLE that he confronted showrunner Michael Patrick King over the decision. James said: “I’m the best boyfriend on the show. I [told him], ‘How come you dissolved our relationship? It’s like we were the two that were the best for each other.’
“And [Michael] said, ‘We only introduce love on this show to have it fail.’ So at least he said that there was love there.’” While the SATC universe continued with And Just Like That, the revival wrapped after three lukewarm seasons, and without Kim Cattrall’s full return.
Alongside All’s Fair, James is also part of one of 2025’s most anticipated horror releases: Welcome to Derry, the prequel to It. In August HBO confirmed that filming had wrapped after an enormous 237-day shoot, with co-showrunner Jason Fuchs writing on Instagram : “Surreal. What a ride. Can’t wait for you to see this thing.”
A chilling teaser soon followed, featuring blood-splattered scenes where characters can be seen screaming while covered in red fluid. The nine-episode series is set in the 1960s.
Welcome to Derry will see Bill Skarsgård back in his role as the terrifying clown, with a cast including Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, Stephen Rider, and James Remar himself.
