In a communal altercation in Edo State, seven people have died and six others have been hurt.
This was made public by the Edo State Police Command in a statement released on Sunday.
Police received a distress call about an ongoing conflict between the Gbelemonti and Maidoti Communities of Ovia North-East Local Government Area on February 21 according to the Command’s spokesman, Moses Yamu.
He said upon receipt of the information, operatives of the Iguobazuwa Police Division, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and the Vigilantes, were promptly deployed to the area.

“The team moved some casualties to the hospital where six (6) injured people are currently being treated while seven (7) confirmed dead.
The joint operation is sustained , as the situation has been brought under control and normalcy restored”, Yamu stated.
The Command has begun an investigation into the cause of the communal clash, according to Yamu, the Chief Superintendent of Police.
According to him, Betty Otimenyin, the state’s police commissioner, has pledged to solve the unfortunate incident’s circumstances without any delay.
The Command’s spokesman noted that the public should always direct complaints to the appropriate authority rather than putting laws in their hands. He described the incident as avoidable.

– *Normalcy restored as investigation commenced
The Command was called on on February 21, 1920, at around 1000 hrs, to report an ongoing conflict between the Gbelemonti and Maidoti Communities in Ovia North East LGA.
The Vigilantes, the Nigerian Army, and the Iguobazuwa Police Division’s operations were all immediately dispatched there. The team moved some casualties to the hospital where six (6) injured people are currently receiving treatment while seven (7) confirmed dead.
The joint operation is sustained , as the situation has been brought under control and normalcy restored.
However, investigation into the cause of the clash has equally commenced.
The Police Commissioner, CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, psc, mnips , has vowed that no stone will be left unturned in order to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate and avoidable incident. She also cautioned the public to always submit grievances to the appropriate authority rather than to handing the laws to them.
