Selena Gomez, an actress, was reportedly crying this week as a result of reports that a US government has implemented a mass deportation policy.
There’s been reports of an “immigration crackdown” in the US recently following the inauguration of President Donald Trump, 78, earlier this month. According to previous reports, deportations have already started as part of a “purge on illegal immigration,” and one official claimed that the “largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Such policy is said to have affected people from various countries, including Mexico, in recent days.
Selena, 32, who’s previously referred to herself as Mexican-American, appeared to address the situation in a video shared on her Instagram Story on Monday, which has since circulated on social media. Whilst crying, she seemed to say in the video, which appears to have now been deleted: “All my people are getting attacked. The children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I would like to do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise”.
Over the video, she appeared to have included an emoji depicting the flag of Mexico and wrote: “I’m sorry”. According to People magazine, Selena wrote in another post on her Instagram Story: “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people”. Additionally, it appears that post has since been deleted.

Selena has previously discussed the immigration of her own family from Mexico to the US. In an article for Time magazine in 2019, she claimed that her maternal grandparents followed her aunt who had “hidden in the back of a truck” during the 1970s. She claimed that Ricardo Gomez, her father, was “born there soon after” in Texas.
She added: “In 1992, I was born a U. S. citizen thanks to their bravery and sacrifice. Over the past four decades, members of my family have worked hard to gain United States citizenship. I constantly consider the impact of illegal immigration, and I never forget how fortunate I am to have been born here thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance.
Selena went on to suggest at the time that she “understands” the system is “flawed” and that the country “needs rules and regulations” but said it needs to be remembered that the US was “formed by people who came” from other countries. She claimed in the essay that it was “time to listen” to those who were “reduced to basic headlines” and that it was also time to “get to know” the people who were directly impacted by immigration policies. She added that she feels a “responsibility” to use her platform to be “a voice” for those “too afraid to speak”.
Prior to the release of the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented in the same year, she wrote the piece. Selena was an executive producer on the project, which has the synopsis: “Eight undocumented families ‘ fates roller-coast as the United States ‘ immigration policies are transformed”.
