Warning: Contains suicide references: TV presenter and BBC Radio 2 star Rylan Clark revealed his mental health issues following his separation from his partner, Dan Neal, saying he was left unable to speak for weeks.
Rylan Clark opened up about his struggle following his split from husband Dan Neal, revealing he was unable to dress, sleep, eat or even speak. Rylan, 36, who shot to fame on The X Factor in 2012, confessed that he grappled with suicidal thoughts when his marriage fell apart and admitted that he lost the ability to speak properly for a fortnight.
In a candid chat with Busted’s Matt Willis on his podcast, On The Mend, the BBC Radio 2 DJ shared back in July 2024: “My marriage ended and I didn’t know it would end and I felt like everything was my fault and I felt like, right, but this is salvageable, I can sort this out. I’m the fixer, that’s what I always do, and all of a sudden I couldn’t fix something and it’s confusing me because I was like, but that’s not right.”
He continued, “I can’t recall what caused me to basically vanish from the person I knew, but the next thing I knew, I could not see, hear, eat, breathe, sleep, and do anything.”

Rylan is currently starring alongside GMB’s Rob Rinder in Rob and Rylan’s Passage to India, as the pair travel through therylan r country, following the footsteps of author E.M. Forster. The series explores India’s diverse culture, history, and spirituality, and is a sequel to their award-winning Venice travelogue, Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour.
And on Saturday evening, 4 October, he appears on Romesh Ranganathan’s Weakest Link, as the quiz show returns to TV. It’s a BBC Radio 2 special, so other stars appearing include Scott Mills, Zoe Ball, Tony Blackburn, Jo Whiley and Michael Ball.
Rylan, who is 6 ft 4 in tall, revealed that after splitting, he struggled to write coherent sentences and that his weight had dropped to 9 stone. He continued, “My mother thought I was having a stroke, and I must have had one.” The presenter continued, “I just entered this dark hole where I thought I was crazy because nothing made sense to me, and partly that was caused by my upset and heartache, but at the same time, I thought I was making things up because of what I was being told. “
I’m so strong, he continued. I’m so, so strong, but I was so broken that I couldn’t even move my body, go to the store, or do anything else.
Rylan had to take a 12-week break from his BBC Radio 2 Saturday afternoon program. following the break-up, causing worry amongst supporters. He confirmed his comeback to the station in September 2021.
I tried a few times, unsuccessfully, and gratefully now, but I just remember going to bed at night after being afraid to leave the house and being afraid to leave. “I just remember trying to stop it,” he said.
Rylan explained that now that he can reflect and be appreciative of what he has experienced. He said to Matt, “I would never allow myself to get that way again.”
Rylan has recently found love again, going Instagram official with his boyfriend on a trip to Italy. He shared some snapshot highlights from the getaway with his new man, Kennedy. Snaps showed Rylan and Kennedy happily posing with a glass of red while looking through a traditional wine window, called a buchette del vino.
Rylan also shared a number of Instagram sight-seeing snaps in the form of a black and white image that includes a close-up of the pair holding hands.
