Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events – day 1,096

On February 24, the third anniversary of the start of the war, is the following:
Fighting
- Ulakly and Novoandriivka in the Donetsk region were taken by the Russian Ministry of Defense, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
- Ukraine is working on a domestic alternative to the US Patriot air defense system, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Politics and diplomacy
- Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, declared that his country’s soldiers were risking their lives by defending “national interests” in Ukraine on the anniversary and that he would keep employing an “unchanged” strategy for strengthening the military.
- Putin added that he and the Russian army were given “the mission” to defend the nation during a ceremony honoring the military decorations.
- According to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, Russia will never sell the seized Ukrainian territories, claiming that “people decided to join Russia long ago.”
- Peskov also said US President Donald Trump’s hostility towards Zelenskyy was “understandable”, and accused Zelenskyy of repeatedly making “inappropriate remarks” against Trump.
- Zelenskyy’s top aide Andriy Yermak said at a news conference that Kyiv could not compromise on independence, territorial integrity or sovereignty.
- Trump reportedly sounded “very confident” that the conflict would end this week, according to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
- Yulia Svyrydenko, the deputy prime minister of Ukraine, stated to reporters at a press conference that the country’s regions were containing about $350 billion worth of crucial rare earth minerals.
- North Korea provided 50% of Russia’s ammunition needs for the war, according to Ukraine’s military spy chief Kyrylo Budanov, according to a press release.
- In light of rumors that the US might stop providing access to Kyiv, the country’s defense minister Rustem Umerov announced that the country was looking into alternatives to Starlink satellite internet service. “We are already working on this,” he said. There are alternatives”, he said.
- Steve Witkoff, the special representative for Trump, predicted that this week, Washington and Kyiv will sign a rare earths agreement.
