Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,053
Here is the situation on Sunday, January 12:
Fighting
- Russia’s Ministry of Defence said the army gained control of the settlement of Shevchenko, near the logistical centre of Pokrovsk, a key target in its advance through Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. The town’s loss has not yet been acknowledged by Ukraine.
- According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, there were several clashes going on in the Pokrovsk sector as a result of 46 of the country’s 56 Russian attacks.
- According to the Russian Telegram channel ASTRA, a Ukrainian drone struck one of Tatarstan’s largest oil refineries in Taneko.
- A Russian-installed official reported that fuel oil from Russian tankers that had been sunk had spewed into the Sea of Azov and reached the shores of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, which was partially occupied by Russia.
- Ukraine captured two North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service backed up Ukraine’s account on Sunday.
Shadow fleet
- Germany is attempting to twitch a tanker that it claims is a part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” keeping it from spilling into the ocean to prevent an oil spill. It is still battling its way to the top of its northern coast. The 274-metre-long Eventin, carrying almost 100, 000 tonnes of oil, was reported adrift and “unable to manoeuvre” in the Baltic Sea.
Sanctions
- Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country would continue to pursue significant oil and gas projects after the USimposed new sanctions on Moscow’s energy sector on Saturday in an effort to destabilize global markets.
Diplomacy
- At a Parisian event, US President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg stated that the world must return to a policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran in order to make it a more democratic nation. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, relations between Iran and Russia have significantly improved.
