The musical prodigy that produced some of The Carpenters’ most beloved tunes, Roger Nichols, has passed away at the age of 84.
His death was on May 17, but it has only just become known and the cause of death has not yet been revealed. His fellow songwriter, Paul Williams, posted a heartfelt tribute to Paul Williams on Instagram.
It’s hard to say goodbye, which is the first song that Roger Nichols and I wrote. Sadly, we hit the nail on the head. Roger Nichols, his wife Terry, his daughters Claire and Caitlin, and he and his beautiful family, who were so proud of, passed away peacefully four days ago at home with them. They fulfilled his dream. He shared “his greatest joy.”
According to the Express, Nichols and Williams left a legacy of hits for The Carpenters, including timeless classics like We’ve Only Just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays, and I Won’t Last a Day Without You. They also enchanted Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Petula Clark, Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, and The Monkees with their compositions.
In a statement made by Roger’s daughter, Claire, she also praised her father on Instagram, saying: “My mom, Terri, and my sisters, Caroline and Caitlin, are all so proud of the man he was and are in awe of the legacy he leaves behind.”
As they deal with the news, fans have been eliciting tributes from around the world. We’ve only just begun, and I won’t last a day, according to Rainy Days and Mondays. Your partnership forever had a lasting impact. One of the most extraordinary circumstancies in human history, immortality through art, can be found in men like he and you. He’ll live in some way each time one of your records turns in. Love and gratitude are the words of one fan, “all souls las forever (I’ve heard it somewhere).
“My condolences! Roger should have received more recognition for his efforts, but I didn’t feel that way. Because their songs are performed by well-known singers and bands, there are far too many songwriters out there that the general public is unaware of. I frequently find myself smiling when I have a few records with the names “Roger Nichols-Paul Williams.” Another shared, “Thoughts and prayers to Roger and his family/friends.”
“This is not the news I wanted to hear,” I said. I’ve known Roger for a long time and you two have always been one of the best songwriting teams. Nothing compares to discovering yet another flawless Roger Nichols-Paul Williams gem. RIP Roger, and thank you both so much. A third admirer lamented, “I’m glad to be in the “small circle of friends” who fully appreciate what he contributed to the world.”
“RIP,” a fourth fan lamented. I was just sung, “I Won’t Last a Day Without You.” Such a lovely song Another expressed condolences by adding, “So sorry to hear this. He produced some incredible music, both for and against Paul Williams.
Another person expressed their sadness by saying, “Very sad to hear this news.” I genuinely enjoyed Roger’s. Mercy and Love. We’ve Only Just Begun, one of his most well-known songs, was just a jingle for a Crocker Bank advertisement. After a bank exec discovered Roger’s album, the songwriting duo Roger and Paul were given the task of writing the song, which was completed just before the deadline.
After hearing the song on television, Richard Carpenter realized how good it was. His band, The Carpenters, followed that song, which became so popular in 1970 that it went on to make their own version.
The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year, made it onto BMI’s million performances, and earned the title of “a million sales in sheet music.”  ,
