Lady Penny and Sir Rod Stewart have been together for more than 25 years, but they recently discussed the secret to their bond in a rare joint interview.
Rod Stewart has admitted the age difference between him and Penny Lancaster does have occasional “downsides” – but insisted they had changed each other for the better during their long-standing marriage.
The pair give a rare joint interview to the BBC for a new series celebrating Christmas. Sitting down next to a festive tree, 80-year-old Rod says he is a changed man thanks to his wife and their marriage of over 25 years. Rod said: “I think, to be honest with you, I think the age difference, there are downsides to the age difference, but not many. I think there’s a maturity, I may have taught Pen, and there’s a certain honesty that she’s taught me.
We don’t argue before going to bed, we don’t argue after drinking a glass of wine, and we wait until the morning. And if there are disagreements, they end right away. And I make an effort to teach all of my boys that “real men can say sorry,” which is exactly what we do. We have a wonderful honesty, and we’ll keep it that way.
I think that as her husband, 54, has grown a lot more compassionate and understanding toward those around her because, obviously, Rod Stewart is a super famous star, but I’m a very diplomatic and compassionate person, and I think some of that has sunk in because the kids will now find dad much easier to talk to. Rod has been encouraged to do the same because I’m open and honest.
The couple, who spoke to BBC’s Anita Rani at their Durrington House, reveal plans for a massive Christmas party for 2025, including a mini Faces reunion, and praise Penny for organizing the family reunion, which will feature Rod’s children Ruby and Liam and three grandchildren who are departing from LA. Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14, will both be present.
Penny is a really good organizer, Rod continues. Therefore, the clan gathers together. Penny organizes my life by planning all the flights and making sure the timing is right. My band all get up and play, and Ronnie Wood frequently shows up and plays with me. We have an eight-piece band. We sing “Faces” together.
Rod claims that his mother once asked him for a “bread bin” when he was successful enough to give her anything she wanted during previous Christmases. He explained that in the 1970s, they spent a little more on gifts than they did on the album.
We used to be close to one another, he continued. So we frequently saw one another. There is a lot of history there, you know. So I headed down to Selfridges and Harrods to purchase this fridge for him. It appears to be furniture instead of a refrigerator. When you press a button, the lid opens, and all that comes out are two bottles of champagne, glasses, chilled, and everything. A drink is poured over you, and it comes back. So I was incredibly pleased with myself. And I turned it over to Elton’s. I remarked, “Here you are, dear.” And he responded, “Thank you, it’s so lovely. Your present is this.
A Rembrandt was used. In those days, a Rembrandt etching cost about 12 thousand dollars. In Beverly Hills, it’s up close to the movie theater. Oh no, it’s very special.
Rod and Penny star in Rod and Penny’s TV show My Life At Christmas with Anita Rani, which airs on BBC One on December 7 at 10:30 am.
