Before they ended up being a thing, Rita Ora recalls how she spent more than four years with her husband, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi.
Before their union, Rita Ora revealed that she had been friends with her husband for more than four years. Before getting married to New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi, the singer, 34, waited patiently.
Then, she made the proposal to him and took the initiative. Rita described how she met him as “He made his own success story from New Zealand.” And, you’re aware, both of our parents passed breast cancer. Actually, that is where we first connected.
I met Taika because Robert Pattinson was actually the person who made me feel that way. I don’t believe I ever gave him a thank you. I appreciate it. Because it was genuine, it said, “We’re going to a friend’s house to barbecue.” I don’t believe anyone ever thought of it, either. And so we arrive there, and we just sat there for hours in the sun before going out again, and we ended up talking for hours. And then, for a very long time, we became friends. four and a half years.
We actually shared our relationship stories. I’m like, “hey, nice to meet you,” when he and his partner were having parties together at the time. You are aware of how much a woman and a woman enjoy using the same restroom together.
She continued, “I went to the bathroom with one of his ex-girlfriends at the time… I had no agenda, so, long story short, there was no plan.” There were no ideas or ideas. He likes to claim that despite his best efforts, I never saw it. Never gave it any thought.
You know, “But then it all clicked.” In that period, so much happened. I believe it was timing. Like I just turned 30. I really enjoyed altering my lifestyle. Then I began to consider introducing myself to a person who would be amazing to me. And that is when I first saw it.
The two had been close before the relationship quickly turned into a marriage in 2022, just weeks after Rita’s proposal.
Speaking on the Begin Again podcast with Davina McCall, Rita explained: “I asked him to marry me. I got the bands made. I didn’t want anything too flashy. I got some bands made that have something really personal, attached to them inside that only we know about. And, I just did the whole thing. We were in LA. I rented out a hotel room in Palm Springs or something.
“A really nice fancy one, filled it up with balloons and cake, which is my favorite thing in the world. And heart shaped balloons and a heart shaped cake… So I’m holding the cake. And the balloons are all around us. And he’s walking in. He walks into the room and he’s like, what the hell, is it Valentine’s Day?’ I’m like, ‘no.’ Anyway, I got down on one knee. I don’t want to be boring. I like to keep things as a surprise. I always get so excited for doing things out of the norm.”
With Chelsea Winstanley, Taika and her two daughters, Te Hinekahu and Matewa Kiritapu, are married.
Rita claims to enjoy her more mature stepmother role. She continued, “I’m like the fairy godmother who sends them all the sugar and ice cream before returning.”
“And their mother, who I love dearly, is sort of like, ‘They’re bouncing off the wall.’ And I’m like, ‘Sorry!’ But you know, I think that’s the fun part of being a stepmum, you can do those naughty things and I take them out and I take them to an Ed Sheeran concert. I mean, I didn’t get a book. There was no one teaching me on how to be a stepmum.”
Rita, 34, has come a long way from the young singer who first appeared on the scene with songs like Hot Right Now ten years ago. She continued to appear on TV programs like The Voice and The Masked Singer as a panelist after that.
Despite some recent backlash, she continues to support being sexy in photo shoots and doesn’t believe women or singers should be afraid to do this.
She continued, “I do think we should be proud of those things.” And now that Sabrina Carpenter is in the spotlight for her sexuality and skin, I see it as a woman. And I’m not getting it. It’s also so boring because Madonna did it, which is so boring. Like men, if you still have a problem with it at this point, it’s incredibly boring.
Rita told Davina that her husband might be able to advise her on what she wants to do next.
She continued, “I want to do a lot more movies because I enjoy movies and consider my husband to be a significant part of that.” More films, a lovely, fantastic album, a fantastic tour, and perhaps a family… I want to make the right timing choice.
