When Richard Hammond discussed the importance of “staying connected,” he once shared his secret to a happy marriage.
After falling in love with her in “an instant” when they first met in the 1990s, the 55-year-old Grand Tour and Top Gear star wed Mindy in 2002. The columnist looking after Richard when he crashed into a horrific crash while filming Top Gear and Richard and Mindy, who have two children, went through a lot together.
However, this week the pair announced their split after 28 years of dating, and their romance ended. Only recently did Richard discuss his secret to a happy marriage. “Stay connected. It’s not the big times, it’s the small times”, he explained.
“It’s not the big family holidays or 21st birthday parties or remembering your anniversaries, or treating yourself to a night in a hotel. It’s going to the supermarket”.
In an interview with The Telegraph, he said: “Stay connected at that level, know what’s in the fridge, know what cleaning products you use in the house, stay connected to that”.
Meanwhile, on Thursday (9 January), Mindy and Richard took to his X/Twitter page to announce their split to their fans. They continued, “A little update from us, we will still be a family this year, but this one is structured a little differently. “
” Our marriage is coming to end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters. We are proud of the family we created and we will always be a part of one another’s lives. We won’t be commenting further, but we sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy. “
Solihull-born Richard once described newspaper columnist Mindy as his” soul-mate and best friend for life”. The couple first exchanged romantic vows in 1995, when they were both employed by the same London-based PR firm. Recalling their romantic first meeting in his 2007 memoir On the Edge: My Story, Richard explained:” In an instant, I fell in love with her and realised I had met my soul-mate and best friend for life. “
The couple got married in May 2002, and in 2006, they made the stunning grade II-listed Bollitre Castle, which has a swimming pool and six acres of land. Richard and Mindy went on to welcome children Isabella, 24, and Willow, 22.
