Richard Hammond ‘fought to save marriage for months’ before split from wife Mindy
TV presenter Richard Hammond “fought to save his marriage” for almost 18 months.
The former Top Gear host, 55, announced on Thursday afternoon that he has separated from his wife Amanda ‘ Mindy ‘ Hammond, 59, after more than two decades together. Fans were told that their marriage, which began in 2002, is “coming to end” in a statement shared by Richard on social media.
Prior to their split, Richard and his partner, who lives in the converted barn at Bollitree Castle in Herefordshire, had been sleeping there. There’s also speculation that columnist Mindy initiated divorce proceedings.
Richard is currently alleged to be “short commute away” from the family home in rented accommodation. It’s reported that the presenter “fought to save his marriage” for almost 18 months before “accepting it was over”.
A source told the Sun: “He tried everything. Although Mindy pushed for a full divorce, he hoped they could live separately at the same address under different roofs. The source then continued, “He even whisked her away to the South of France to fix things, but it just didn’t work.”
Richard and Mindy, the former Grand Tour host, had been dating for almost three decades. The former couple, who got married in 2002, are parents to daughter Izzy Hammond, 23, and Willow Hammond, 21, together. They have experienced difficulties in their marriage, among them Richard’s involvement in a car accident while Top Gear was being filmed in 2006. He fell while receiving a brain injury as a result, and spent several weeks in an intensive care unit.
Years later, Richard speculated that Mindy had assisted in putting him into a coma after he learned about it. He claimed in a video posted to YouTube in 2022 that he had woke up around the same time his wife had been “screaming” and saying “don’t you dare die” at his bedside in intensive care and that he had a “dream” that he was walking in the Lake District while he was in the coma.
On Thursday, Richard and Mindy announced their separation in a statement from themselves and on X, formerly Twitter. A little update from us: We spent Christmas together as a family, and we’ll still be doing this year, just structured a little differently.
The statement continued:” Our marriage is coming to end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters. We are proud of the family we created and we will always be a part of one another’s lives. We won’t be commenting further, but we sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy. “
