Reason Elton John’s mum walked out of his epic Wembley gig after just three songs

After ignoring any of his songs, Sir Elton John’s own mother accidentally missed one of his biggest concerts.

The 77-year-old singer once won over crowds at Wembley with a massive day-long concert called the MidSummer Music concert, which coincided with the summer solstice that year. He shared a stage with The Eagles, The Beach Boys, Joe Walsh, and Chaka Khan – who all performed before the Rocket Man began his set.

He performed a number of hits, but he also blasted out all ten songs from his previous album, Captain Fantastic and Dirt Brown Cowboy, one of which he reportedly hasn’t played live since. Sir Elton’s mum Sheila Farebrother – who died aged 92 in 2017 – was in the audience, but decided to walk out after he played some more obscure tracks.

And she left with Ringo Starr, who also played drum for The Beatles, in good company. In a recent interview, the Yellow Submarine performer revealed the historical anecdote.

The Daily Star quotes the 84-year-old musician saying: “I was with his (Elton’s) mother (at the MidSummer gig). He said, “I’m only going to do the new album” (for the second half of the set). We didn’t know them, so I and his mother left after three tracks.

When his mother passed away in December 2017, Sir Elton was shocked. He told his fans at the time, “So sad to announce that my mother passed away this morning,” he wrote online. I was shocked when I first saw her last Monday. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton”.

He later told The Sun: “I saw her a week before she died and thought, ‘ God, she’s pretty feisty, she’s going to last for a few months. ‘ She passed away a week later. I was really shook by it.

After falling out with his mother in 2008, the chart-topping legend and his mother had a difficult relationship, with Elton’s marriage to David Furnish posing as a source of tension between the two. Due to their bitter disagreement, Shiela and Elton John had a famous impersonator for her 90th birthday in 2015.

Lashing out at her son-in-law in an interview with the Daily Mail, she said: “He had always been very kind to me until he got with David Furnish”. She criticized David for causing a rift between her son and his long-time friend Bob Halley, saying, “It’s pretty obvious if anyone thinks about it.
