The Real Housewives of Cheshire star Lauren Simon has spent the past three years dealing with the agonizing and painful effects of a “botched” boob job in Turkey. After being urged to travel abroad by a friend, the 53-year-old visited a clinic in Istanbul to lower her 34DD chest down to a 34D.
Lauren exclusively reveals the extent of her ordeal to help educate other women considering going under the knife abroad now that she is nearing the end of her reconstructive treatment.
“If something seems too good to be true, it probably is,” she ruefully says, “I fully understand why someone who has had three kids might want to boost their confidence and pay £2, 000 in Turkey rather than £2, 000 in the UK.”
Hello, Lauren! Why would you need a breast reduction operation in Turkey?
I had a tendency to jump first and think later, like Lauren. I went with a friend who works in a plastic surgery company there, so I knew I would be fine. I’d never undergone invasive surgery, so I had to decide, “I’ve got two kids, I’ll just have my boobs put back where they’re supposed to be.”
Did you thoroughly understand where you were going?
No. Everyone said I was crazy when I told my friends, but I didn’t. I have a strong head. You also believe you have control once you’ve experienced a difficult divorce, like I have, and you can go about doing anything. If I’m being honest, I felt invincible. I wouldn’t listen, but my mother said, “Don’t go.” I pondered, “I’m going with a friend, I’ll be fine.”
When you arrived there, what transpired?
I flew to Bodrum to get my teeth checked, then I flew to Istanbul to have my nose removed and breast removed.
I was taken to a very fancy hospital with a large number of patients who looked like movie stars while wearing Chanel. When the surgeon, who I hadn’t seen or spoken to, arrived at 7am and said, “Right, what are we doing? ” I was on the VIP floor. I took a picture of Megan Fox and showed him what I wanted my nose to look like. Who captures photos of Megan Fox? utterly ridiculous! and that I wanted a breast implant that lifts them and one size smaller.
You then had both operations performed. When you woke up, what transpired?
I realized I had a reaction to the general anesthetic. I spent an additional day at the villa where I was staying with other women who were also working on other things, so I stayed in.
You were all having surgery at the same time, right?
Yes, a nurse is monitoring us while six women, including myself, are staying in the same villa. On the same day, everyone underwent numerous surgeries. The majority of them engaged in Brazilian butt lifts, tummy tucks, full-body lipo, and breast reductions. I don’t believe I even had the same surgeon because my left and right breasts had different needlework.
Have you immediately noticed any additional issues?
Yes, my left nipple was purple and hot, with a breast that was about three times the size of the other. I was aware of a problem. When the bandages were opened, the entire nipple was black; the flesh was dying, so I returned to the hospital a few days later.
That sounds incredibly terrifying. You must have felt disoriented…
Because my nipples were getting darker and darker, I refused to fly home. They admitted me and arrived every two and a half hours to help blood flow through my nipple. I ended up spending a month in Turkey, sleeping a lot, and suffering greatly. I was merely crying during the initial weeks. I spent the last two weeks in and out of the hospital to get the infection treated.
What did you do each day?
In the morning, I would go for a walk before watching TV. I practiced self-help podcast listening and a lot of meditation. To be able to stay sane, I needed strength from a very deep place.
When you got home, what happened?
I had a surgery last week with a doctor at The Pall Mall Surgery, and I’m really fortunate that I found some amazing doctors here. I am aware of the reasons many UK doctors avoid performing operations from abroad. I experienced capsular contracture, where the scar tissue around the implants tightened. Such a difficult experience.
What guidance would you offer someone who wants to have surgery abroad?
If you’re going to a surgeon that’s reputable, and you are speaking to and FaceTiming them, that’s one thing. If you’re going somewhere that just does Instagram adverts, don’t do it. That said, I understand that for someone on a normal salary, there’s still a big difference in costs, so it’s about educating people to help them make sensible decisions and making the UK market more competitive.
Your daughters, Gigi and Kika, must have been very concerned.
They opted not to let me go, despite the fact that they are now 21 and 17. They are aware that everyone makes mistakes.
They seemed content to have me home, in my opinion. However, it turns them off about getting their boobs done! They may think I’m stupid, but they’ll always be with me.
Have you performed surgery?
I guess it took me so long to make the decision to work on something. I’m currently in my fifties. I believe that going to the gym and eating well are the best options. It has undoubtedly altered my way of life and working.
However, you still remain confident.
No, I’m not only very body-positive. Although I always think I look amazing, my clothes are always too short and tight.
And is there a special someone there?
I’m… interviewing, not in a relationship at the moment! But I’ll probably wait until the sexy lingerie and sports bra come off before buying anything.
