After being given a wildcard to the preliminary stage of the Abu Dhabi Open, Britain’s Emma Raducanu will play in the first qualifying draw for the 2021 US Open.
Following Nick Cavaday’s decision to step down for health reasons, Raducanu, 22, is traveling with her fitness instructor Yutaka Nakamura but is not a coach.
Although her ranking was lower than hers, qualifying for a tournament seemed like a good idea at the time of her ranking when that achievement was so stunning that it resulted in numerous wildcard invitations to play.
In August, Raducanu told BBC Sport, “I don’t think playing qualifiers is something I’m against.”
“You feel as though you’ve got through those two rounds,” the player said. If you’re playing a seed, you have a better eye for the ball, a better feel – it’s not that I am against it at all”.
Elena Rybakina, the world’s fifth-ranked player, Paula Badosa, the Australian Open semi-finalist, and Katie Boulter, the first British player to enter the Abu Dhabi main draw.
