Tottenham’s forward Mathys Tel claims the racist online abuse he received following the club’s most recent Uefa Super Cup defeat will not “bring him down.”
After Spurs lost the match 4-3 on penalties after letting a two-goal lead slip in normal time, the 20-year-old Frenchman was the target of offensive tweets on social media.
In the penalty shootout, Tel came on as a substitute in the 79th minute and was one of the two Spurs players who did not convert from the spot.
Spurs claimed that the abuse had “nothing but cowards” and that those who wrote the messages to Tel, who had recently left Bayern Munich for the north London club, were “disgusted” by the abuse.
Tel, who was speaking for the first time since the incident, stated in a post on his Instagram account that he wanted to thank everyone who had sent him “messages of support.”
“Women should be ashamed about Wednesday night, but racism has no place in our society,” I said. Every day is a learning curve, and every lesson is a lesson, according to Tel.
“I am aware of where I am from, where I started, and nothing about this will make me fall.” Respect trumps with effort and humility.
Antoine Semenyo’s racist abuse in the team’s opening Premier League game against Liverpool at Anfield led to Tel’s comments.
After Semenyo flagged it up to the referee, the game with the current champions was briefly stopped in the 29th minute.
