Actress Prunella Scales passed away at the age of 93 after playing Sybil in Fawlty Towers. Before his passing in November, the much-loved actress was married to her husband, a fellow actor, for 60 years.
The actress’s children discovered the actress had watched Fawlty Towers, the day before she passed away. Our lovely mother, Prunella Scales, passed away peacefully at home in London yesterday, according to her family. She was 93. She continued to reside at home despite her retirement from a remarkable acting career that spanned nearly 70 years.
The day before she passed away, she was watching Fawlty Towers. Pra has 61 years of marriage to Timothy West, and she is survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Prunella best known for playing Sybil, the long-suffering wife of Basil Fawlty in the TV series Fawlty Towers, opposite John Cleese. She also starred as Queen Elizabeth II in the television series A Question of Attribution and as the queen herself in the one-woman production An Evening With Queen Victoria.
Prunella’s early acting credits include Hobson’s Choice (1954) and Pride And Prejudice (1952). Her professional break came when she appeared opposite Richard Briers on the early 1960s sitcom Marriage Lines.
She also appeared in several BBC Radio 4 sitcoms, including Ladies of Letters and After Henry, and she also appeared in the television series Mapp &, Lucia, which was based on the EF Benson novels.
In Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, she portrayed Queen Elizabeth II. Additionally, in the BBC television series Seven Of One from 1973, Scales and Ronnie Barker collaborated.
In four BBC Radio 4 plays, Scales played Hilda, the “she who must be obeyed,” wife of Horace Rumpole with her real-life husband, Timothy West, playing her fictional husband, in 2003.
Prunella reprised her role as Sybil Fawlty, the new manager who wants to take over Hotel Babylon in Children in Need in 2007. She appeared in the production of Carrie’s War, a Nina Bawden novel, at the Apollo Theatre in 2009, as well as in the audio play The Youth of Old Age, which was released in 2008.
Prunella remained a Labour Party supporter for the rest of her life and participated in their political broadcasts during the general election campaigns of 2005 and 2010. She served as SOS Children’s Villages, a global charity that provided orphans and abandoned children with homes and mothers.
In 1963, Prunella and Samuel West, the actress and director, had two sons and a stepdaughter named Juliet.

She revealed that her short-term memory was fading in January 2013. Her husband discovered Prunella’s Alzheimer’s disease a year later. He made a statement about her health that was “the sad thing that you just watch the person you knew, loved, and were very close to disappear.”
There is nothing much we can say about a concert, play, or movie because Pru will have a fairly hazy memory when we go there afterwards.
Due to Prunella’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, the couple started appearing together on Channel 4’s 10 Great Canal Journeys series from 2014 until they stopped.
Timothy led a “long and extraordinary life on and off the stage” before passing away in November of 2024. His family claimed in a statement that he had left “a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren” at the time of his death.
“He will be very dear to everyone,” he declared. We would like to express our gratitude to the amazing NHS staff at St. George’s Hospital, Tooting, and Avery Wandsworth for their compassionate care during his final days, they continued.
Their son Samuel discovered that Timothy’s mother was unable to process his death at the time of his death. He stated, “She’s not really well enough to take it all in,” and all I’m saying is that.
