Pres. Tinubu announces shake up headships, councils of federal universities

Some federal universities’ leadership positions have been changed, according to President Bola Tinubu.

The Special Adviser to the President for Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, stated in a statement on Thursday that the changes are intended to revitalize the nation’s higher education system through effective leadership and accountability.

President Tinubu removed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi’s duties as Vice-Chancellor and dissolved the governing body at Yakubu Gowon University (previously University of Abuja).

Sen. Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of the university, while Prof. Lar Patricia Manko will serve as Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term.

Similar adjustments have been made at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu was appointed interim vice-chancellor for a six-month period of interim service. Prof. Oguejiofu T. Ujam will take Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu’s place as acting vice-chancellor.

Additionally, retired Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo, while Mr. Olubunmi Kayode Ojo is the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN.

Prof. Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi has been appointed as the Federal University of Lokoja’s Pro-Chancellor, Sen. Sani Stores as the University’s Pro-Chancellor, and Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi as the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State’s Pro-Chancellor.

According to President Tinubu, these changes reflect his administration’s commitment to strengthening governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
