Premier League Everton appoint Moyes as manager for second time

Following Sean Dyche’s dismissal by the struggling Premier League club, David Moyes has resumed his role as Everton manager.

Moyes, 61, made his name during an 11-year stint in charge at Goodison Park from 2002 to 2013, a period that included a fourth-place Premier League finish in 2005 and an FA Cup final appearance in 2009.

Dyche was sacked on Thursday by the club’s new United States-based owners, the Friedkin Group, hours before an FA Cup victory over Peterborough, with Everton 16th in the Premier League table and just one point above the relegation zone.

Moyes is reported to have agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract that will see him lead the club into a new 53, 000-capacity stadium next season.

“It’s great to be back! In a club statement on Saturday, Moyes stated, “I enjoyed my 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and I never paused when I was given the chance to rejoin this great club.”

“Today, we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in putting the players behind the players in this crucial season so that we can form a Premier League team in our brand-new stadium.”

After being successful at Everton in his first season, Moyes was given the opportunity to succeed Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. However, he was fired after less than a season due to a troubled Old Trafford.

The Scot’s reputation was quickly rebuilt during his two spells at West Ham, but Real Sociedad and Sunderland were followed by brief stints there.

After escaping relegation issues for the East London club in the 2017-18 season, he made a five-year comeback in 2019 that saw the Hammers enter Europe three times and wrap up a 43-year wait for a trophy by winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

“We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history”, Everton’s Executive Chairman Marc Watts said.

He is the ideal leader to help us move forward with our final season at Goodison Park and our new stadium, according to the club’s manager, who has over a decade of experience there. Working with David will help us lay the groundwork for a new era for Everton, he continued.

Since leaving West Ham at the end of last season, Moyes hasn’t had a job.

On Wednesday, his second Premier League appearance will be at Aston Villa.

After a five-game winless run that saw Everton only score one goal, Dyche’s two-year reign came to an end.

Graham Potter, a former Chelsea boss, reportedly made one of Everton’s top targets, while Jose Mourinho, a former employee of Roma, reportedly distances himself from the position. Mourinho also reportedly worked for the Friedkin Group at Roma.

Former Everton defender Leighton Baines, now the club’s under-18s head coach, and captain Seamus Coleman took charge for the win against third-tier Peterborough.
