Policeman Goes ‘Berserk’, Shoots Three In Cross River

In Calabar, the state capital of Cross River, Effiong Bassey, a police inspector who is thought to have gone berserk, shot three people.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident.

The incident took place at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Atakpa, Calabar, according to the Command’s spokesperson, Ugbo Irene, on Sunday morning.

She claimed Bassey “started acting strangely” when he left his nighttime duties at Ekondo Microfinance Bank.

Instead of handing the AK-47 rifle back to Inspector Bassey, he proceeded to block the station’s gate and stymied entry and exit. The officer’s actions escalated despite attempts at a peaceful resolution,” the statement read.

“Inspector Bassey, who is suspected of being mentally disturbed, opened fire on bystanders who had been told to leave the area,” were dispatched to the scene after that.

Tragically, the officer accidentally struck three people, including 41-year-old female Ijeoma Wilson Obot, who later succumbed to her injuries. Charles Mkpang, one of the other two victims, and another person are currently receiving medical attention and are stable.

The officer was eventually subdued, disarmed, and is now in police custody, according to a spokesperson for the Command, and he is currently undergoing further investigation.

The victims’ hospitals were being cared for by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, and the Cross River State Command Management Team, who were concerned about the incident.

The AIG donated to the hospital to help with the injured’s immediate treatment.

The Command stated that the police authorities were talking with key stakeholders to stop the community’s tension from rising.

In addition, it urged the public to remain calm while the investigation into this unfortunate incident is advancing.

The Cross River State Police Command will make the investigation’s findings public in due course, ensuring that justice, fairness, and equity prevail.
